Mitch Murder’s ‘Heading South’

Mitch Murder is just on a roll, ever since the release of his ‘Current Event’s album (number two in our best albums of 2011!) he’s been delivering awesome new track after track, and basically taking the whole retro synth scene to school (which, I imagine, would be kinda’ like the detention in The Breakfast Club).

This week’s fresh cut is ‘Heading South’, which sees old Mitch going right to his outrun core. A SynthWave narrative of a race to the boarder, but Mr. Murder opts for a laid back groove to get him there. The synths shimmer, the beat drive, the tale is told. Right now you can’t expect a finer SynthWave track than one of Mitch Murder’s productions, you know what to expect, he constantly impresses with both his production and his musical talent. This is the soundtrack to our Saturday.

Aimes reMixes Teeel

Brooklyn based purveyor of introspective retro Pop Aimes has just revealed his reMix of Teeel‘s Triangle Waves’. He’s given it an energy boost and delivered a really quality slice of vintage electronic Pop.

The original version of ‘Triangle Waves’ was the lead track on Teeel’s ‘Amulet’, a mid-tempo, almost SynthWavey, example of post-Chillwave ElectroPop, all analog synths and distant vocals. It was a good tune, but Aimes has made it even better. Drawing on both the current wave of Indie-ElectroPop, with it’s catchy ‘80’s electronic Soul reference points, and bits of Italo and Disco Aimes turns in a track with all the charm of the original but more of a solid groove behind it and some really sweetly processed synth sounds. If Aimes is going for a retro futuristic style of chilled and soulful RoboPop, he’s absolutely nailed it. Part BladeRunner and part ‘80’s Discotheque with the soul of a poet, I remember when defenders of Real Music™ said that synthesizers had no soul, looks like it’s some humble pie for them then!

Max Action

Max Action. You can only really say it in a deep, movie trailer narration, voice, with a pause in between. Max. Action. Max Action is the chosen moniker of , well, who know? Someone Canadian. They don’t write bios apparently, or attempt to promote themselves much at all. What they do do however, is write epic SynthWave tunes. So let’s focus on that for the time being.

‘Terminal Crazy’ is Max Action’s latest song, or should we call it a soundtrack, is over ten minutes long. This kind of length gives Max room to tell a musical narrative with what he’s doing and really create a mood. It’s a synthesized Sci-Fi odyssey combining layers of intense machine riffs with lush pads robotic melodies. The score to a retro futuristic galactic war, ‘Terminal crazy’ is as exciting and involving as the imaginary movie it sets the tone for. While you’re hear, check out his reMix of Fear Of Tigers’ ‘the Adventures Of Pippi Longstrump’, which gives the track a gritty, ‘80’s feel with some surprisingly funky percussion.

Chrome Canyon’s new EP

France’s On The Fruit Records are killin’ it right now. They are pumping out quality release after release and the next up is no exception. Released today is the new EP from Brooklyn based futurist Chrome Canyon.

The ‘Body Music’ EP is space-age retro synth Funk paradise. The EP is summed up in the lead track ‘Computers Of Love’. What’s not to like in this track? It’s got everything you’d want from cosmic analog Disco. Funky slap bass, huge Sci-Fi synths, vocoded vocals and as the various melodies spin out into the galaxy you get the feeling that there is a not only pretty impressive musicality behind the tracks, but also a quirky sense of humour. When the rockin’ Funk solo kicks in you know you’re in the right place. the track is reMixed by Melee Beats, and a man of consistent quality, Douze. Douze brings this nostalgia jam into the 21st century and adds a little French Touch to the mix, in a big way. The EP’s other original ‘Body Music’ is more of a brooding, ‘80’s soundtracky, peice. Like a meeting of Vangelis and Kraftwerk it’s the musical narrative of a robotic call to arms and could have featured on the best of early ‘80’s Sci-Fi flicks. Heroismo and Stavarsky both take a crack at reMixing ‘Body Music’, with the latter delivering a dark post-Italo dark future mix. If the original is the Sci-Fi movies theme, then Starvasky provides the backing for when adversity strikes. Great moody SynthWave. If you like vintage synth music and old school Italo and Disco beats, then this release’ll be something special for you.

Mitch Murder X Nite Sprite

Ever since Sweedish SynthWave genius Mitch Murder dropped his album, ’Current Events’ late last year we’ve seen a resurgence in activity from him, releasing killer tune after killer tune. The latest from this prolific period is this reMix of ‘In The News’ from Nite Sprite.

Nite Sprite are a Norway based duo who craft some of the slickest retro Funk you’re likely to hear for a while, and with this mix they step up their game to serious levels. Everything about this mix, of one of the highlights of ‘Current Events’, is a pitch perfect meeting of SynthWave and Nu-Funk. From the SynthWave side of it’s DNA it bring a retro epicness worthy the best in ‘80’s Sc-Fi TV themes, combining lush, evocative chords and playful little melodies. Adding to that is it’s funky side, with a pure dancefloor groove and twisting Disco leads. Nite Sprite have given us a great way to start the week. Can;t wait for more from them.

Jacques Lu Cont’s ‘Church’

I don’t think there is any comeback in 2012 we are more excited for that that of Stuart Price/Les Rythmes Digitales/Thin White Duke/Jacques Lu Cont’s return to music making.

In ‘Church’, the second new track he has dropped, without fuss or ceremony’, Jacques Lu Cont shows the everyone why he is one of the top electronic music producers in the world today. It’s a track that puts everyone making bally Electro to shame. With an FM bassline (with a hint of Lisa Lougheed’s ‘Run With Us’ about it!) that has such impact and drops and build in just the right places, this tune is a dancefloor juggernaut. Probably the best flat-out dance tune we’ve heard in a while. Simply stunning. This is one church I could get behind.

Lost Years goes ‘Digital’

Some people just don’t know their own talent.

Here’s what SynthWave producer Lost Years wrote about this track on SoundCloud: “I’m not really sure about this track… I’ve been working with it for a week and that’s not my usual ‘style’. Most of the time I do a track in 3 hours. I think I tried too hard with this one and It did not came out as good as it should. Trash bin or not… you decide?”. I’ve no idea how he can remain so humble about such an awesome tune. ‘Digital V1’ is retro synth heaven. A mid-paced, brooding peice of post-Italo electronic scoring that conjures the calm before the storm. Running digital basses and delay heavy percussion are lifted into the stratosphere by some epic leads in a track that feels all about anticipation. When shit’s about to go down, this is the soundtrack.

Foxes + Pyramid + Monsieur Adi

Singer/songwriter Louisa Rose Allen’s recently had a second wind, as Foxes, when Neon Gold, always with the finger on the pulse of eclectic Pop, snapped her up for the release of her new single ‘Youth’. released earlier this month.

Appropriately for Neon Gold, the single exists in the nexus between Ellie and Marina. Take Marina’s quirkiness and Ellie’s percussion led bombast and wrap them up with impassioned vocals and a sense of accessibility and it should see Foxes make quite a mark in 2012. You know Neon Gold has an eye for these things. The internet has been graced with some wonderful reMixes of the tune too. Pyramid, who début is still regularly playlisted round these parts, delivers an seriously impressive, driving, SynthWave mix. With a real analog rawness to it, yet still with a Pop sheen. Some majestic organs elevate a track which is probably my favourite version of the song, which is saying a lot when you hear the other reMix. Monsieur Adi, who since his début has done no wrong in our eyes, turns in an awesome, rhythmically exciting, slice of soaring Nu-DiscoPop. Frantic drumming and dagger sharp synth leads and a hint of Samba all fall into Adi’s melting pot and the result is a seven minute aural party.

Awkoder reMixes Edgework

Released yesterday was the new single from French electronic act Edgework. the reMix package contains this gem from the awesome SynthWaver Awkoder.

So light and fluffy is Awkoder’s reMix, that’s it’s practically ElectroPop. There’s actually quite a strong strain of New Order DNA running through this track. The bassline, the bright shiny synths, the arrangement, all capture something of New Order in the early ‘80’s, bits of ‘Blue Monday’ and ‘Shellshock’ spring to mind. This, of course, is all injected with Awkoder’s Nu-Italo synthesizer skills and results in a nice slice of retro synth nostalgia.
