[Audio] AIMES’ ‘Dirtbox’

aimes

Brooklyn’s finest is back with another slice of thoughtful, robotic House music. AIMES has been a firm fixture on electronic rumors since he made his début. Sometimes an artist comes along with something about them that makes them stand out from the crowd to us; with AIMES there was both a musicality beyond his contemporaries and a crisp, synthetic, analog sound to his tunes, whether turning his attention to Disco, House or SynthWave his tunes were just that bit more electronic (which obviously appeals to us!).

AIMES has dipped his music toe into a number of genres in his career; but whether Chillwave, Nu-Disco or Indie-Electro his tunes are generally pretty recognisable as he gives the styles his own unique spin. Right about now he’s teamed up with Mexican label Trafico and gone a bit left-field for his latest single. It’s out now, called Dirtbox, and comes loaded with it’s B-side, Prophet Jam, and reMixes from Mexico’s Juan Soto and NYC’s Tunnel Signs.

AIMES keeps things on just the right side of weird on Dirtbox. Hypnotic and undulating, Dirtbox introduces you to the hook early on, amid a sea of hammerfall piano. The hook persists throughout the track, weaving in and out of a symphony of pads, strings and vocal snatches in a tapestry of mysteries dancefloor sounds. Jumping in with some good squelchy Acid riffs is just the icing on the cake. Dirtbox is a track that will draw you in and command you to dance, and even when it’s over it will be ringing round your head and leaving it’s shadow on your feet.

AIMEs is one of a small group of artists who manage to make records that are both full-on funky Disco and House, and yet are quite experimental and intricate in their use of sounds and arrangement. It’s a hard feat to pull off, but AIMEs does it with style.

[Audio] Ben Macklin’s ‘Think Of Me’

ben-macklin_thumb

We reckon you’d all know London based producer and all-round nice guy Ben Macklin by now. Not only one half of the UK’s answer to Chromeo, Cassette Club, but label boss and particularly talented producer in his own solo right too. Ben delivers the sound of the summer each and every time with warm, laid back tunes that draw on the wealth of Disco, House, SynthWave and SynthPop. Ben’s tune are just…nice. we’re not sure of there’s a better word to describe them, like a sunshiney afternoon spent with good friends and good drinks, for four minutes a Ben Macklin production can make you forget your worries and let you sink into the comfortable groove.

The man is pretty prolific these days, even if there isn’t nearly as much new Cassette Club material as we would like going around. Regular releases have been coming out on his Modal label over the past year and a half or so. Barely a month goes by without a new single and, surprisingly these days, this hasn’t for a second translated into a drop in quality. Take his latest offering, Think Of Me. The track’s release has been perfectly timed to coincide with a break in the UK’s bizarre gloomy mid-summer period and as we write this piece the sun is blazing down and Ben’s new single is the perfect soundtrack. The release sees him once again teaming up with fellow Londoner Emma Brammer (of Dare and It’s Over fame) on vocal duties who’s smoky croon lends an air of enigma to the track.

For such a cosy tune, the bassline in Think Of Me is pretty spikey. A razor sharp digital Funk bass that would impose a robotic dominance over any other track, but Macklin tempers it with washes of glowing and intimate tones that breeze between lush pads and starlight chimes, all rolling over a solid, but unobtrusive House beat. Leading the way on Think Of Me is a soothing electric piano hook and Emma’s enticing vocal. As Ben peppers her voice with the occasional Dub-like effect to weave it in and out of the tune, Emma’s slightly melancholic holiday daydreaming carries you away as much as any element of the music. In the car, in the headphone, on the boombox, DJ’ed by the pool; this one should be enjoyed in the outdoors in good company.

If Think Of Me makes you want to relax in the sunshine, then AIMES stellar reMix of the track will have you heading straight to the dancefloor. injecting the tune with a little Boogie, a little Italo and a little vintage Disco; one of Brooklyn’s finest, AIMES, hits the end of those big snare rolls running with orchestral stabs and the unrelenting machine Funk of the reMixes’ machine gun bassline. Mid-way point the reMix explodes in a symphony of strings and intertwining synth lines, all perfectly crafted to keep the dancefloor energy at it’s highest. Hold tight for the killer synth solo! Likewise, German synthesizer head Final DJs (‘Final DJ’ goddamnit!) delivers a densely layered electronic odyssey.

[Audio] AIMES reMixes French Horn Rebellion & HAERTS’ ‘Swing Into It’

Next Jack Swing Pt. 1, Brooklyn groovers French Horn Rebellion’s second album of last year is set for an action packed reMix edition this week. The aptly named Next Jack Swing Pt. 1 (reMixes) boasts a whopping twenty re-takes of the original album’s track from the likes of Chordashian, Blende, Justin Faust, JD Samson, Chrome Canyon, and this monster from the mighty AIMES. AIMES has chosen to take on the HAERTS featuring Swing Into It. Listen up below.

Our boy AIMES dives hard into the deep end of pulsating Italo Disco and retro House grooves. Driven by a slightly acidic, and utterly compelling, old school synth bassline, the track is a loaded love-letter to late 80s extended 12” reMixes. The heavily reverbed vocal snatches that pepper the track lend more authenticity to this period piece, intertwining with the intricate tapestry of Electro hook. Everything comes together in a fun and feel-good arrangement that commands you to dance.

Harmonique Cosmique is the latest single from one of our faves, Brooklyn’s Discomeister AIMES. Goin’ all musical high-brow, the man had dropped a concept single where he delivers four version of the same track, all targeted toward different dancefloors. There’s the AM Version, the Beach Version, the Late Night Version and the Disco Version; which you can check out below.

The Disco Version of Harmonique Cosmique plays to AIMES strength. It’s a synthetic Robo-Disco masterpiece, loaded with vintage futurism and late 70s/early 80s Sci-Fi Disco tropes all wrapped up in some sick synthesizer funk. The machine bass commands you to dance while all manner of popping and zapping electro plays out over a  tapestry of attention seeking lead lines. Upbeat and energetic, this is AIMES’ comfort zone and he nails it.

[Audio] AIMES’ ‘Burnin”remixed by Tronik Youth

This week one of Brooklyn’s finest purveyors of synthesizer goodness AIMES drops his new release via Wonder Stories. It’s a companion to his huge single of earlier this year, Burnin’  featuring five new versions of the tune. This new reMix collection brings together such talent as Auxiliary Tha Masterfader, A Copycat, Perdido Key, Rocco Desentis; and this grinding monster from London Electro hounds Tronik Youth.

As you’ll no doubt be aware, the original was a driving and summery House tune that featured some soulful vocals from NY resident Javi; this is completely flipped as Tronik Youth give the track an East London basement club vibe. A stuttering and ominous Electro rework that despite being abrasive and relentless retains a cheeky charm. Chainsaw synths and squealing leads replace the poolside sounds of the original as Tronik Youth put together a strobe-light oddessy for the early hours. Now there’s a Burnin’ for every occasion!

[Audio] Falcone’s ‘Ghosts’

Falcone

Falcone, the artist formally known as Aaron Alexis, is certainly working his way through the Brooklyn production roster. If we’re honest we’d like to see him going back to producing his own material, we really dug the old Aaron Alexis tracks, they had a consistent sonic style; one of warmth and soul. Anyway, this new one, Ghosts, was mixed by AIMES, who throws off his recent Nu-Disco dominance for some of his old school Chillwave flavour.

And very Chillwave Ghosts is too. Reverb drenched vocals swirl about the track as cacophonous beats and waves and waves of lush pads swell and fall from the speakers. It’s actually kinda’ Shoegaze-y, a wall of melodic sound partnered with a cavernous voice. Electronic Shoegaze with soul, that’s Ghosts. Brand new genre?

Stop the press, our boy in Brooklyn, AIMES, has just dropped a power bomb! Teaming up with NY vocalist Javi to drop a bran new track that hit you from the first bar. Burnin’ will be getting a full release alter in the year on AIMES’ own Wonder Stories imprint, complete with a host of reMixes, but until then the track is available to download right now. Careful, it’s razor sharp!

A neo-Italo juggernaut, Burnin’ hits the ground running with a rapid fire arpeggiated bassline that is relentless in it’s funkiness, it grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go for five minutes. A House track at heart, Burnin’ delivers on everything you want to fill the dancefloor, all mixed up with AIMES own unique spring synth style. Javis vocals are just the icing on the cake, soulfully tempering the edges of this hard hitting tune. Keep this in check until the weekend!

Burnin’ will be released with reMixes later in the year.

Out this week is the new single from Brooklyn SynthWaver turned Tropical Disco guru AIMES. It’s with this vibe in mind he unleashes his latest track, available on 12” and download, fittingly titled On Holiday. The singles comes packed with reMixes from Rotkraft, Future Feelings and Sare Havlicek. Strap in for summery vibes.

For a feel-good sunshine tune, On Holiday is pretty heavy on the synths, especially when proceedings get pounding toward the end. Before that, though, the track delivers spaced-out keys against a backdrop  of infectious Disco basslines and Topical purcussion. There’s quite a wistful vocal in the mix too, that ties the Holiday theme together nicely.

Brooklyn’s AIMES seems determined to bring a little warmth and summery vibe to these cold winter months with his last few releases. The latest in his series of free singles is Time For Us, and like the others, shows off AIMES’ ability to perfectly blend influences from number of styles that are hot right now, and make them all sound personally unique.

“Vibe Huse” as AIMES calls it, presents us with a heady cocktail of Deep House and Tropical Disco, with just the tiniest hint of Chicago in the mix. A thundering beat provides the backbone for a dazzling array of swing fuelled synths. Blissful arpeggios chug along in the background while the tracks focus is taken by a demon bassline and some sweet island keys. Just sink into this one.
