Yeah/Dish!’s ‘Prom Night’ compilation

Parisian Disco label Yeah/Dish! has been releasing some really nice stuff, for free, over the past year. Many of these releases we’ve featured right here, now the crew are coming out with a full blown compilation. Released today ‘Prom Night’ is nine tracks of pure, Funk fuelled, synth nostalgia.

The tracklist reads like a who’s who of up and coming Nu-Disco artists with a couple of established names and some SynthWave thrown in for good measure. Featuring the likes of Luminaire, Cyclist, Stereocool and Hemmingway you know you;re in for a groove treat, full of laid back summer vibes and lazy Disco with a French flavour. There’s a collaboration between SoHight & Cosmonaut Grechko called, ‘Night Moves’ that’s ever bit as slick as you;’d imagine coming from these two. With a jump-out-your-seat beat and funk synth soloing that just sails through the track, ‘Night Moves’ is what retro synth and Nu-Disco should be all about. The king of SynthWave and Outrun Electro Mitch Murder contributes a sweet, emotional slice of his ‘80’s soundtrack inspired work, ‘Vanilla Sky’ is an atmospheric four minutes of synthesizer gold, with tons of soul. Moustache Machine’s second appearance on electronic rumors today comes from ‘Brenda’ and whiles less frantic that his other work, this more laid back peice is loaded with electronic nostalgia and a smooth groove. Also included is Stay Ali’s recent comeback track ‘Oh Tom’, a twisted and infectiously catchy little experimental peice that never forgets to create a melody that will worm it’s way into your brain. Yeah/Dish! have put together a pretty amazing collection of tracks, for free, and we salute them for it. Salute!

Jules Schimmer reMixes alloapm

One of Manchester’s finest exports, Mr.  Jules Schimmer, has been working his retro synth magic once again, this time on Tokyo based DreamPop outfit alloapm. I almost called alloapm an ‘avant-garde DancePop outfit’, as they can get a little weird, but in a good way, and they never stop bringing the Disco, so we’ll just stick with ‘DancePop outfit’ for now and see how the post unfolds.

Anyway, Schimmer is riding high right now with a string of really top quality reMixes, and the on-going development of a bigger and bigger sound, bringing some hands-in-the-air to it’s ‘80’s core. Unfortunately most of the time it’s buried away on SoundCloud. Seriously, more people need to hear JS’ tracks, I think the word underrated really does apply here, the word on Schimmer needs to get out. Just take this new track, like I said, hands-in-the-air with an ‘80’s core. And over the bouncy retro bassline the epic stuff gets really epic. Beautifully orchestrated strings that weave in an out of a piercing lead line lift the track up to such heights and play around the highly effected vocals to produce a track with a huge scope. nostalgic and majestic at the same time. Jules Schimmer, like an ‘80’s movie, brings laughter, tears and eventual triumph in just under five mins of uplifting ElectroPop.

digitalfoxglove’s ‘Unsteady’

Germany’s digitalfoxglove, easily one of the finest, and most underrated Nu-Disco producers on the planet, spends most of his time these days mucking around with a bunch of Californians as one quater of Dreamwave Supergroup Ride The Universe. Luckily the man can still find time in his busy schedule to sneak in some new digitalfoxglove tunes, or at least dust off one ones and give them a new lick of paint.

As is the case with ‘Unsteady’, a warbling slice of synthetic Disco. The track is actually quite SynthWavey for DFG, the progression and sounds are pretty retro but it’s all held in place with some frantic arpeggios and Disco siren synths. ‘Unsteady’ is a nice mixture of epic cinematic and in-your-face dancefloor action and makes a nice primer to a summer of releases with DFG input including two forthcoming Ride The Universe reMixes, for Quinten 909 and rodent-chomping-monster Jane Balder, and a reMix of She’s The Queen’s ‘Talk To Me’, to be released by, well, me. So, yeah, we’re keeping him busy!

Nite Sprite’s début EP

Nite Sprite are a Norwegian double act whose harsh Electro/SynthWave we recently featured reMixing Mitch Murder’s ‘In The News’.  The duo have just released their début EP and it’s a no-nonsense, dark robotic journey through the night. Check it out.

Their self-titled EP contains four originals, named ‘Scene 1’, ‘Scene 2’… and so on which only adds to the ambiguity of these tracks. This isn’t sweet Outrun/SynthWave inspired by ‘80’s teen movies, this is holy-shit Electro SynthWave inspired by ‘80’s “what the fuck is after me” movies. They actually remind me a lot of Coloureds, in that way they can make Electro noise terror but still retain a Disco groove or a cinematic SynthWave progression. it’s not an easy thing to achieve and Nite Sprite pull it off with ease. Highlights of the EP include ‘Scene 1’, which sets up the EP with harsh digital bass and melodies filled with dread anticipation, ‘Scene 3’ which channels a little Kavinsky and Vince DiCola together into a noise, but emotionally driven tune, ‘Scene 4’, the most melodic of the tunes, maybe the finale of the Originals. ‘Scene 4’ is a brooding, but ultimately optimistic slice of chainsaw electron with a tune. Also, their are reMixes from Totem and the king of SynthWave Mitch Murder, who takes the heavy elements of ‘Scene 1’ and works them into a flawlessly produced, post-EBM slab of pure retro synth work. Mitch’s reMix drops some really interesting elements, the crunch synth guitar playing against the sparkling leads to create a rich, full sound. An interesting EP to be sure, and an in-you-face début form Nite Sprite.

Emeron & Fox’s début single

‘Dopecity’ is the forthcoming new, and début, single from the awesome Emeron & Fox. Released via Silhouette Music later in the month. We’ve been keeping an eye on these guys for the last few months even since they came onto our radar so we definitely agree that it’s about time for this Brooklyn based duo to start properly releasing stuff and I can’t think of a better partnership that with Silhouette.

‘So what can we expect from ‘Dopecity’? It’s a pretty classic SynthPop track with slight Nu-Disco overtones. Based in bass, the track revolves around it’s undulating and buzzing bassline. Layered on top are some rich retro synths and some haunting female vocals that despite being layered and quite ethereal end up being surprisingly catchy. The track is a nice mix of retro and contemporary and a nice premiere single. reMixes come from The Legendary 1970 Orchestra, L’Equipe Du Son & Follow Me. L’Equipe Du Son’s take on the track  is a deep Disco groove with some nice House topping. Rocking the ring modulator L’Equipe Du Son created a humming synthetic Disco tune with slowly moves along it’s hypnotic vibe to a multi-layered finale. Follow Me’s mix is a sweet, light, SynthWave track that is uplifting and infectious. Full of Funk and sweeping retro synths I think this version is the standout for us.

Final DJs début single

Well it’s finally here. Germany’s purveyors of the finest in dreamy SynthWave Final DJs release their début single for On The Fruit Records today. It’s been a long road tog et here which has seen this duo dropping originals and reMixes taking in everything from cinematic Dreamwave to bass funkin’ Nu-Disco. It seemed to take them a while to settle on a sound of their own, but with this premiere release they lay down their musical manifesto. You better listen up.

‘Gossip Country’ contains three originals and two reMixes, the title track is an epic excursion through synthetic melodies. Kicking off with a machine bassline with a Industrial feel, which isn’t as harsh as it sounds and makes for a nice hypnotic, undulating, backing for the lush, rich pads and some of Final DJs greatest solos and lead lines to date. There even a little ‘90’s House vibe in the mix too just to offset the overwhelming 80’s-ness of the leads. Final DJs have crafted some real goosebumps moments in ‘Gossip Country’ and, whilst keeping the SynthWave sound have taken it one step further and taken Outrun Electro one step further toward being accepted by the mainstream. Flipside number one, ‘Salt On Our Skin’ is more of a funkier affair, but in an funky Italo way rather than a Nu-Disco vein with it’s bouncy digital bass being impossible not to move to. Again these producer double act hit just the right note with their soaring synth work. The remaining B-Side, ‘A Long Way Home’ is a more traditional dance affair with a lot more of the 90’s vibes. reMixes come from Sebastian Scotch who drops a deep Housey Disco track and Justin Faust who reworks ‘Gossip Country’, adding a bit more of a syncopated groove and a classy Disco sheen. Faust keeps a lot  of what makes the track so good in place, just tweaking things here and there, making the song ready for prime time.

Pteez’ ‘Southwind Part 2’

One of our favourite up-and-coming Russian producers Mr. Pteez is back. this time he’s dropping the follow up to last years ‘Southwind’.

Pteez sticks with the chilled summer vibes for ‘Southwind Part 2’ and lays down some retro Electro Boogie fit for the beach. The very cinematic SynthWave Pteez lays down, with it’s densely packed arrangement of sweeping pads and nostalgic melodies, conjures images of moves from the ‘80’s, maybe some light action, not comedy but not to serious either, the good guys are definitely prevailing. That’s a win for everyone!

Camille R’s ‘Vegas Night$’

‘Vegas Night$’ is the new single from French SynthWave producer Camille R. The precursor to his forthcoming new album. To be released in the coming months the new records will be the follow up to last years’ ‘Last Limit’, and album so good it featured in the electronic rumors Awards Best Album of 2011 category.

So it was with excitement that we checked out this first taste of what to expect later this year. ‘Vegas Night$’ shows a smoother, slightly more mature sound for Camille. Truly capturing the Vegas vibe means Camille has added a little glamour to this tune, mixing up his 80’s synth work with some late ‘70’s Disco strings and licks. Even the percussion has a kinda’ bright-white-jumpsuit sheen to it with it’s cabaret bongos and shimmering chimes. ‘Vegas Night$’ is slick as hell, and makes us very excited to hear what the man has up his sleeve for us on his full length record.

Malibu B’s ‘Downtown’

Hungary’s Malibu B has been going from strength to strength this year. With a string of awesome tracks and a storming single on Binalog Productions, this is one producer who a definitely getting better and better.

On his latest tune, ‘Downtown’ he brings a little ‘90’s flavour to his ‘80’s SynthWave sound. there is something so indicatively ‘90’s about the combination of synths and the breakbeat from The Soul Searchers’ ‘Ashley’s Roachclip’. Sure, it’s an ‘80’s Hip Hop beat, but use it with dreamy synths and the whole thing becomes hazy ‘90’s Pop. ‘Downtown uses the break at it’s core but gives us the kind of Yacht vibed nostalgic synths over to top that we are used to from Malibu B. The combination adds new, interesting, dimensions to the retro sound.
