[Audio] Irish Steph’s ‘Breathe’ (+ Ali Jamieson and Louis La Roché reMixes)

Irish Steph

Breathe is the forthcoming new single from seriously underrated Dubliner Irish Steph. Out at the end of the month on La Valigetta, the single is already getting spun by the likes of Madeon, Philippe Zdar (Cassius), Aeroplane, Justin Faust and Shinichi Osawa and deservedly so. When the release drops you can expect a bursting-at-the-seams reMix package from the likes of Blatta & Inesh, Joao Ceser, Stephane Deschezaux Ali Jamieson and Louis La Roché. Check it out.

Breathe bursts out your speakers with a siren drone before easing in a heartfelt vocal and a heavy bass groove.Walking the line between Nu-Disco and harder Dance sounds, Irish Steph delivers something that’s both a powerful dancefloor tune and something a little more cerebral. Robo vocals and layers of buzzing synths combine to create something strangely haunting amongst the pounding drums. Ali Jamieson takes the tracks Funk one step further, turning in a buoyant slab of Turbofunk, heavy on the vintage synth sounds and cosmic sweeps, revealing a gentler side to the original’s vocals. For the full-on Disco version of the track we turn to Louis La Roché who incorporates a bouncy bassline, the kind that can’t help but put a smile on your face, and uplifting keys in a twisting, galactic, mirror ball oddessy that, thanks to the vocals, doesn’t quite shake the original’s unsettling element. The whole package is pretty top quality. Mind-Disco.

[Download] Baron Von Luxxury edits The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’

The Eagles

The latest in Baron Von Luxxury’s series of awesome edits come sin the form if this space age slo-mo Disco version of the The EaglesHotel California. Following some slick work on tracks from the likes of Madonna, David Bowie and Bee Gees, Luxxury seems to have picks a song he hates, just for chuckles. You gotta’ hear his own words: “That’s right. I made fucking Hotel California (one of the most irritating songs of all time) by the fucking Eagles (one of the most arrogantly bloated bands of all time)…I was able to take out some of the more annoying hippie shit and replace it with some fucking vocoders and Moroder-y synth bass.”. Can’t argue with that.

Luxxury turns in a brooding, relentless track. Pairing up a slow, plodding Funk with ominous overtones as he builds a creeping synth dread the Baron vocodes the vocal track to otherworldly levels. The kind of track you could quite easily find yourself accidently lost in on the dancefloor, it’s no surprise that DJs like the legendary Greg Wilson are already spinning this hard. Cosmic Disco fantasy at it’s best, at only 82 BPM, this reMix can soundtrack your grooviest nightmares.

[Audio] Nightly’s ‘Build One’

Nightly

So, it seems like everyone is jumping on that Gesaffelstein Nu-EBM, Techno train these days. Making that mad Powernoise cash, yo!  Next up is Nightly, new alter-ego of German Disco dude Christian Strobe, who releases a double A-side single this week consisting of Build One and Build Two. Also, we can’t be the only ones geeky enough to see the words ‘Nightly’ and ‘Build’ together and have our minds immediately go to software release schedules? Yes? Oh well…carry on.

To be fair to Mr. Strobe, he does inject a fair amount of Groove into his pulsating, grinding Techno. Set among a relentless onslaught of Industrial purcussion, siren screams, Electro zap and drone synths, there sits a little bit of Funk that gives the track an unusual swing. There’s a bright lead line that is strangely reminiscent to Russ Chimes’ Never Look Back that elevates the track above the noise. The upshot of all this contradiction if a song that is forcefully powerful, a dancefloor destroyer, but one that will stand out for the Teutonic Techno pack.

[Audio] Blende reMixes Pyramid’s ‘The Phoenix’

Pyramid

Well, how could this be anything but irresistible? The winner of the electronic rumors Award for best song of 2013, London based producer Blende, remixing our favourite Sci-Fi SynthWaver Pyramid. Released at the end of the month as part of Pyramid’s latest single for Kitsuné Music, The Phoenix sees Pyramid throwing caution to the wind and experimenting with Rap, courtesy of Willy Wesly, over his dystopian Disco.Blende joins Likelife on reMix duties.

Blende brings everything together nicely. The reMix is energetic and fun; playing up to both the rhymes and Pyramid’s piercing, analog sounds but injecting the whole affair which a ton of his (now customary) carefree Funk. Riding on the kind of syncopated bassline that just powers the song forward, Blend layers swooshing synths, furious drum fills and some chorus keys that sound almost Gospel in their majesty to create a track full to bursting point; but never overpowering.

[Audio] Lightwaves’ ‘Returned’

lightwaves_returned_02

It seems that not only is Lightwaves back, but he (now they) is back with a vengeance. It was only just before X-Mas that they released their first record, both in ages and as a band, Starting To Believe; which was swiftly followed by an awesome reMix from Fear Of Tigers. Now, with 2014 barley a couple of weeks old, Lightwaves releases Returned. Are you sitting down? ‘Cos the DC outfit have dropped another huge slab of SynthPop to knock you off of your feet.

By now Lightwaves modus-operandi is familiar. Heavyweight retro synth riffs, unobtrusive Indie guitar, powerfully driving rhythm section and those anthemic, passionate vocals; are all present and correct on Returned. With just a hint of a SynthWave-esque 80s slant the track shows off a clean, crisp Indie-Electro sound put in place with precision production and a razor sharp sound pallet. Whilst maybe not reaching the epic heights of last month’s Starting To Believe, Returned is an adequate compliment to that track; exploring Lightwaves’ live, rawer, side.

[Audio] Fred Falke reMixes Foxes’ ‘Let Go For Tonight’

foxes

Surely it can’t just be us who can’t hear Foxes’ impressive new single Let Go For Tonight without it sliding into Ellie Goulding’s Lights in your head? Actually, it probably is just us. Anyhoo, it’s a pretty big single, made even more bombastic by French Touch and ElectroPop legend Fred Falke, who once again swoops in and turns a slick Pop tune into a slick Disco monster. This one is classic Falke.

Rocking an insane selection of bass riffs, guitar licks and piano hooks, this reMix has Falke really going to town in his studio. There is only one direction in this tune; up. It keeps getting bigger and bigger, layering Disco soundtrack over Disco soundtrack until there is this immense, string fuelled; mirrorball gazing juggernaut that Foxes energetic vocals lend a Pop essentialness to. In all honestly, people could stop producing DiscoPop right now and this would stand as the pinnacle of the genre just fine. Both Foxes and Falke start 2014 hitting the ground running.

[Audio] Zimmer reMixes Moullinex’s ‘To Be Clear’

Moullinex

Released last week via Discotexas, was the new single from the king of the Portuguese Disco scene, Moullinex. Set amongst a packed reMix collection, that include work from RAC and Kraak & Smaak, sits this absolute gem from the Parisian creator of Horizontal Disco; Zimmer. Featuring the vocals of Rebeka’s Iwona Skwarek, the original was a pumping three and a half minutes of DiscoPop which Zimmer transforms into a laid back blanket of Tropical breeze.

Pitching down the vocals for a ghostly (and surprisingly soulful) vibe, Zimmer introduced all manner of haunting sounds to contrast his popping, vintage, synth array and House flavour. the restful is something that is both compellingly dancefloor friendly and mysteriously chilled. Maybe that’s the point of Horizontal Disco, who knows? No-one except Zimmer himself we guess. You’d have thought the Pan Pipes would be a bit cheesy in a post-Enigma world, but the work amazingly well in this track; an instrument not often used in Disco, but one that lends the track a little emotional rush. All-in-all, an infectious tune from Zimmer that completely reworks the original and delivers something of an intelligent floorfiller.

[Audio] Chromeo & Toro Y Moi’s ‘Come Alive’

Chromeo

So, we were probably not going to post about this track, it’s over a week old and has been done to death on the internet. But, frankly, after such a long holiday we needed to ease ourselves back into things. Also, it’s fucking Chromeo and Chillwave superstar Toro Y Moi, how could we leave that alone? It’s the next teaser single from Chromeo’s forthcoming fourth studio album White Women, following Over Your Shoulder and Sexy Socialite; and frankly the most exciting thing we’ve heard from the new record so far.

Where the first two singles piqued our interest us, it’s Come Alive that really sets up White Women as one of our most anticipated released of 2014. A crystal clear slice of Disco Soul that sounds as classic Chromeo as anything they’ve ever done. Pure retro Funk Pop, Come Alive rides a wave of feel-good vintage groove, buoyant on a raft of shimmering synths and inquisitive slap bass. Chaz Bundick’s vocals nicely compliment Dave 1’s own voice as they take-turns with verses which give the track that back-and-forth feel that some of the best Chrome tracks always crafted between Dave & P. A slick-as-hell primer for White Women.

Chromeo’s forthcoming new album, White Women, is due out early 2014 and also feature collaborations with Oliver, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and Solange Knowles.

[Audio] Fear Of Tigers reMixes Lightwaves’ ‘Starting To Believe’

lightwaves

Earlier this week we gushed about the surprise new tune from the awesome Lightwaves, Starting To Believe. Well, it just gets better. Not only is the song a massive EelctroPop monster that is destined to put the newly band-ed Lightwaves on the map (finally!) but here comes a reMix from the one and only Fear Of Tigers. Can it get any better?

Fear Of Tigers goes large with this one. Recognising and enhancing the anthemic qualities of the original, Fear Of Tigers up the drama with massive chainsaw synth riffs and juggernaut drums. Set for peak time in the big room, this one compels you to move yourself, and even suggest a little hands-in-the-air might be appropriate. Powerful and pumping, this is about as huge as ElectroPop can get without bursting at the seams. With a hint of a retro groove in the sweeping chords, easing in an undercurrent of nostalgia, this is one reMix that won’t be ignored.
