Short Circuit’s début EP

More Short Circuit! This week he’s the hardest working man in RoboPop™!

I can’t believe this is his début EP! Short Circuit tracks have been a staple in my mp3 player for what seems like years now but nonetheless here it is. The ‘Late Night Drive’ EP is six tracks of the kind of Electro vocoder Funk that we’ve come to expect from SC and it’s only when presented with a collection like this that we realised how eager we’ve been for fresh Short Circuit material. The EP kicks of with the LexiconDon collaboration ‘Nothing’s On The TV’ which we first heard on LexiconDon’s ‘The Secret’s Out’ mixtape last October, it’s a amped up chant-along ElectroPop tune with sets up the listener for Short Circuit’s particular style of smooth Electro-Disco with a raw, or edgy, production quality that gives it that unique SC sound. Following on is ‘Get Up’, which takes a Rock arrangement and applies that to a string tinged ElectroPop tune to powerful effect. We were hoping that ‘How We Speak’ would put in an appearance on the EP, featured briefly in this live video that premiered last week and seems to be the spiritual successor to Short Circuit’s now classic ‘Let Go’ with similar strong bassline and Andrew’s RoboVox™ that get stuck in your brain, this time with added cowbell!

Short Circuit – How We Speak

‘Keep It Together’ draws things back to a laid back tempo for some heavy vocodered Electro-Funk before ‘Charmed’ reminds you where Short Circuit came from, being the quintessential Binary dancefloor tune. The title track, ‘Late Night Drive’ ends the EP on an epic retro-Electro note and seems to nicely sum up the EP, more heavy bass and vocoded vocals leading into soaring synth leads with an almost cinematic feel. Overall the EP is exactly what we wanted from Short Circuit but at the same time a lot more diverse than we were expecting. ‘Late night Drive’ is satisfying, and pleasantly surprising.

‘Late Night Drive’ is released 23rd May on Binary Entertainment.

Cosmonaut Grechko’s new EP

Cosmonaut Grechko’s new EP, ‘Alaska 2100’ is out this week and is a pretty stunning electronic masterpiece.

Grechko hits the ground running with track one, ‘Singin’’, with Joywave, it’s the prefect meeting of Dreamwave and Indie-Electro, like a spaced-out-Disco Passion Pit. It’s catchy but still maintains a summery mellow groove. ‘All I Hear’ is up next with some help from She’s The Queen (I’m writing about She’s The Queen on a day other than Thursday, feels weird) that tasks Emily’s vocals out of the normal DancePop environment and slides them into some laid back, almost Chillwave, reverb washed Disco. As with ‘Singin’’, ‘All I hear’ is incredibly listenable, Grechko’s organ riffs intertwining with the big retro synths to create an intricate, yet effortlessly cool, jam. ‘Coloreye’ and the title track are both more tradition Disco fare, both mellow and upbeat, that show Grechko still has the skills to flat out rock the dancefloor and they lead into a selection of reMixes including these two by Electronic Rumors faves Show Your Shoe and Blue Satellite. Show Your Shoe takes on ‘All I Hear’ and proves why he’s the man to watch when it comes to smooth Electro-Funk cuts with some crazy Moog action while Blue Satellite turns ‘Singin’ into a massive upbeat DiscoPop track.

The ‘Alaska 2100’ EP shows a real maturing of Cosmonaut Grechko, musically. An evolution of his music that will surely place him at the forefront of Indie-Electro and Nu-Disco.

La Roux & Fear Of Tigers!!!

What a massive tune to kick off the week!

If you had dug deep last month and supported Fear Of Tigers’ awesome entry into the London marathon raising money for the WSPA you would have been gifted with a link to this track, and we who donated have been rocking to this all month.

This is Fear Of Tigers’ reMix of La Roux’s ‘Bulletproof’, officially commissioned but (for some bizarre reason) not used, it’s a massive ElectroPop monster. If you know me in real life you’ll know that I speak my mind, I’m not a sycophant, I’ll tell people (and producers) if I don’t like something. So understand it’s not because I’m a fan of FOT, it’s not because he had me on his The Guestlist show a couple of weeks ago, and it’s not because he is letting me premiere this track right here that I say that this is easily the best reMix of ‘Bulletproof’ I have heard. This is the huge, retro influences but modern production, Fear Of Tigers that we’ve come to know and love, and sometimes you just know Elly’s voice was crying out for a bit of uplifting euphoria. With a Big Room sound this reMix will slay wherever it is dropped!

If the rumours are true, and La Roux are in the studio with a well known Indie rock band recording their second, “we’re not an Electro act”, album this might be you’re last slice of ElectroPop La Roux. Well, if that’s the case we salute you ElectroPop-La-Roux and thanks’ to Fear Of Tigers you’re going out on a high!

La Roux – Bulletproof (Fear Of Tigers reMix)

You wouldn’t have been able to escape the information that Ben from Fear Of Tigers ran the London marathon this year to raise money for WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals). We’d like to extend our congratulations to Ben for an amazing job, you can read about it in this blog post, and hitting his target of raising £1500 for an excellent cause!

Joypopp release début EP on Binary

Yesterday saw the release of Joypopp’s début EP, ‘Ecstatic’, on Binary Records.

It’s an EP bursting at the seems with four original tracks and three reMixes. We’ve already covered two of the original tunes on the EP, ‘Desire’ and ‘Volupté’, both of which really whet our appetite for more Joypopp. ‘Nostalgic’ and ‘Six To Six’ are more of the same top quality analog ElectroPop from the French duo. With their big Sci-Fi soundtrack synths and sweet female vocals, the Joypopp combination is defiantly a winner. ReMixes on the EP come courtesy of Night Drugs and these two from Girlfriend Records head honcho Sferro and Binary’s RoboPop™ main man Short Circuit. Sferro turns in a suitably retro slice of ElectroPop with a laidback groove, deep bass and awesome 80’s melodies. Short Curcuit’s reMix takes the track in the opposite direction, it’s a heavy mid-tempo club track that sees SC moving towed an almost Justice mix of rock riff-esq chainsaw synths and Disco drums.

Even more Futurecop! ‘Starworshipper’ reMixes

It has been suggested to me that I was less than complete with my selection of entries in Futurecop!’s ‘Starworshipper’ reMix contest, so let’s put that right!

Sarah from Holographic People rightly pointed out to me that the Young Digerati mix easily deserved recognition. And she’s so right, I don’t know how I left it out, if you go and look at the SoundCloud page for the track you’ll see me raving about it when it was first released so how I forgot it I don’t know. Mind like a sieve! It’s an amazing piece of work that just proves Young Digerati are on their way ‘up’!

Commenter Larry sent me in the direction of the second reMix here, by Lenno, who is a just 16! Seriously! Which kinda’ blows my mind. I hadn’t heard this mix before and I am so glad I have now. This slick Dreamwavey mix will defiantly have me checking out more of Lenno’s stuff.

A new tune from Alpha Boy

Mr. Alpha Boy has dropped off his new tune, and it doesn’t disappoint in an 80’s way.

‘Walking On Light’ sees the German producer getting orchestral and epic atop his retro synth patterns. Adding a baroque touch to his music with strings and harpsichord takes the track to a new dimension that gives an otherworldly feel to the 80’s influenced synth work. Still, Alpha Boy keeps up the energy with a full-on 80’s Pop Electro rhythm section which nicely juxtaposes with the rest of the instrumentation.

More Futurecop! ‘Starworshipper’ reMixes

With Futurecop!’s ‘Starworshipper’ reMix competition over, and congrats to MPM for the win, we thought this would be a good time to let you check out some of the awesome ‘also rans’.

We’ve already posted the MPM winning entry and Sferro’s smooth mix, but up there as a serious contender for the crown is Ren Riz’s perfect slice of Dreamwave DancePop that compliments and builds on the original with style.  Silenx’s ‘Sunrise reMix’ injects a little synthesizer emotion into the track with his big retro chords and little additional melodies that nicely layer up the track. For those of you wanting something to beef-up the tune check Owl Vision’s, ahem, bang0r, that takes your face and slams it into the dancefloor.

Amazing work by everyone involved.
