Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:
This week we’re dedicating Goin;’ Old School to to the documentary, and it’s soon to be released soundtrack, The Sound Of Belgium. Directed by Jozef Devillé the film has already won numerous awards and chronicles the journey of Belgian music from the dancehall days of Popcorn, through EBM and New Beat to House and Techno. You can find local screenings on their website, and this November a three CD soundtrack compilation will be released with a tracklist reading like a whos-who of influential Belgian music. To us, Belgian music will always mean old school EBM and New Beat, so check out three tracks from the forthcoming album that remind us of out wasted youth.
It’s been featured on Goin’ Old School before, but Front 242’s Headhunter from 1988 is the quintessential EBM track.
Another one from 1988 Neon’s Target Records New Beat classic, Voices.
Maybe 1988 was the year for us? Logo’s moody SynthPop/New Beat Businessmen certainly helped.
The Sound Of Belgium triple album is released 25th November, the documentary has it’s first UK screening this month, find dates here.
I’ve been dying to post this for a couple of weeks and now I finally can. Here’s Goldroom‘s masterful reMix of Gigamesh’s ‘Red Light’.
Premiered on The Magicians’ ‘Magic Tape Sixteen’ , Josh Legg’s reMix can only be described as ‘a treat for the ears’. This track is the aural equivalent of sitting on a rooftop, overlooking the city, watching the sun go down, an end to the day and the slow beginnings of the night. I would have said ‘sitting on a beach’ but there is something slightly urban about the track, I think it’s the rolling ‘80’s bass gives it a hot city nights feel while the dreamy synth work bring to mind that point at dusk when anything is possible. We’ve really dug all of Josh’s Goldroom work so far, but he has really nailed it this time!
Fear Of Tigers – The Guestlist 05/08/2011 = Futurecop! drop by The Guestlist this week, so you know the tunes are going to be spot on. Also, the man Pete Tong is in the house! If that wasn’t enough Fear Of Tigers gets you set for the weekend the the best selection around.
That is a Cat On A Keyboard In Space, you can be on your keyboard all over one of Fear Of Tigers’ best loved tunes, ‘The Adventures Of Pippi Longstrump’ as he launches what I’m sure will prove to be an exciting reMix competition.
In 2009 Fear Of Tigers released hid début album ‘Cossus Snufsigalonia’, which was one of the best albums of the year and, bewilderingly, given away for free. ‘The Adventures Of Pippi Longstrump’ (or ‘Pippi’ to it’s friends) was an immediate hit and pretty much summed up everything we Retro Electro/Dreamwave/ElectroPop fans were looking for. It was even on the telly!
Fast forward to 2011 and FoT is gearing up to release a brand new album, ahead of witch will be coming some reworks of the older tunes getting an official release. Possibly including your reMix alongside the likes of Diamond Cut and Edwin Van Cleef?
You can find the lowdown on the reMix completion here and grab all the stems right here. It’s gonna’ be a tough fight though, with judging alongside FoT will be Justin Faust, Futurecop!, Diamond Cut and Edwin Van Cleef! This is one reMix competition you can be sure we’ll be keeping an eye on!
Fear Of Tigers – The Guestlist 15/07/2011 = Some of the guys from The NightMoves Collective join Fear Of Tigers this week to add their ingredients to FoT’s usual recipe of some of the hugest tracks around, both classic and bleeding edge.
Fear Of Tigers – The Guestlist 08/07/2011 = One of the perks of posting about The Guestlist each week is that once every seven days I get to browse funny pictures of Tigers! A packed show this week includes a mix from the Micromix guys and Clancy’s awesome new tune ‘Panther’.
