koi.

Hailing from Virginia Beach in the Us comes producer koi.. He’s just released a full length album of laid back, funk infused sounds. A heady mixture of Dreamwave, Lo-Fi, SynthWave, Tropical Disco and Chillwave, koi.’s ‘Maelstrom’ is the prefect soundtrack to lazy, dreamy summer days.

‘Maelstrom’ contains ten tracks of instrumental, synthesizer, bliss. Layers of warm, comforting synths and a general all round felling of good times. Nothing too stompy for the dancefloor, this is music to chill with your nearest and dearest to. Can I say ‘bliss’ again? Bliss. ‘Cos it is. From the album’s opener ‘Beirut’ you are treated to waves of shimmering sounds, rich buzzing pads, sharp and precise leads and the tiniest bit of funk in the rhythm section. The album only gets warmer as it progresses. Straight into ‘Gauss’ you are dropped right into the nostalgic dreams conjured by this record. In it’s concept and delivery this is such a confident début, not once does it struggle to find it’s feet, and when a record rests on such an emotional connection this is important. Even when it tries something different, like the jump up rhythm of ‘Jam’ or R&B flow of ‘Ginseng’, it is sure enough of itself to never break the smooth summery groove of the album as a whole. And the amazing thing is koi. has only been at this for six months, although I’m sure he must have been a musician for a while, this is a musicians LP. Talking the best from SynthWave and Chillwave and pouring into a Dreamwave mould, koi. has all the waves covered, so let his album wash over you.

Malibu B’s ‘Tropical Heat’

‘Tropical Heat is the latest tuned from Hungarian SynthWave producer Malibu B. The man has been riding high this year with a string of critically acclaimed tunes and cemented himself into the heart of the SynthWave scene with his smooth vibes and Miami Vice moments.

This new tune brings a little LA Funk to the mix with this relaxed tune that’s probably the most Disco thing Malibu B has released so far. Keeping both the slick ‘80’s vibe and the marina feel of his previous work, ‘Tropical Heat’, takes you to that sunset place, waves lapping around your feet. Only this time there’s a Disco injection. Malibu B is coming on leaps and bounds in terms of production, this mix in ‘Tropical Heat’ is pretty sweet, it’s quite a dense track, but everything is sitting nicely, which makes the whole thing the kind of track that allows you to just go with the flow.

Johnatron & Sferro’s ‘Frozen’

Girlfriend Records continue their bid for SynthWave world domination, following Le Prix awesome ‘Cosmonova’ their second commercial (they have a long history of free releases) EP comes from Girlfriend head honcho Sferro and San Jose producer Johnatron.

‘Frozen’ is an rousing dance track that is build upon the DNA of SynthWave, Dreamwave and Italo with a health does of the atmospheric. The solid Italo beat and bassline make it unmistakably for the dancefloor, but the lush chords and the haunting vocal, that weaves it’s way in and out of the melodies, give it an otherwordly, dreamlike, quality that sees to wrap you up and sweep you along with it. The flip side, ‘Frozen’ is, well, it’s kinda’ like what Psy Trance would sound like if it was made by people who actually liked music. Hypnotic and ever evolving, but musical and sonically rich. The single conatins some beautiful artword from DW Design too.

Tokyo DreamPop outfit alloapm’s new single is being released on Sunlinxx next month. It;s easily their best track to date. Malc Yacob and Amelie Mirror Adnis finally seem to have found their sound and slotted comfortable into it. This is a much more polished, much more mature record than their previous tunes, and one that finally shows off their years of experience in electronic music.

‘Gorilla Slighly’ is a complex track that sounds really simple, and that’s a genius bit of work. All the best songs are simple groves and alloapm put off making an intricately programmed, multi layered tune feel like an easy riff. Big, thick, synths and jittery percussion ride over a solid Disco beat while some heavily modulated vocals deliver a smooth flow. It’s got a pretty unique sound, whilst still fitting the beach party Disco vibe. reMixes come from labelmates Keenhouse, who turn in a deep piano house mix. Keenhouse’s mix is killer. And Rhythm Droid with a dub heavy glitchy mix. Abelard rounds off the package with the big Dreamwave mix we were all waiting for, this is the one for summer good times. That’s how to do La Disco!

Pyramid reMixed by Monsieur Adi

Last week we told you to go and but Pyramid’s long awaited reMix EP companion to his Sci-Fi epic ‘Rising Day’. Well, it’s out now, did you buy it? Of course you did, it’s awesome! just in-case you haven’t checked it out yet, here’s Monsieur Adi contribution to the collection to convince you further.

Turning his attention to ‘Citizen’ from ‘Rising Day’, Adi works his, frankly awe inspiring, cinematic electronic magic on the track. As epic ad you would expect from Adi, this reMix is also driving and powerful, based around a rough, distorted bassline. An unusual grittiness for Adi, but have no fear, the dirty Disco is still layered with his rousing orchestration. Monsieur Adi delivers a full on pedal-to-the-metal dancefloor destroyer with the dual goals of hard dance and emotional resonance. It’s a futuristic car chase with you in the drivers seat. But this whole EP now!

reMix competition ultra roundup part two: Lifelike & Popular Computer

So, here we are with the second instalment of our reMix cometition roundup, where we sift through the shit to find the gold so you don’t have to. The other big reMix competition running right now is Lifelike & Popular Computer current single. The robotic dance anthem ‘Getting High’. Let;’s take a look at who’s actually delivered a decent reMix, rather than phoning it in just to reMix a Lifelike track, shall we?

Of course Germany’s Final DJs have a track. You can’t have a reMix competition with a Final DJs entry. But you have to admit they are literally top of their game. Nine times out of ten they blow all the competition away and with their take on Lifelike & Popular Computers tune they are once again in the top tier if entries. Rocking that vocoded vocal for all it’s worth and produce a future dance track that combines the driving power of the original with Final DJs melodic leads and atmospheric pads. Collins’ ‘Children Of The Sky’ reMix mixes up a bit of Italo with a bit of Cosmic Disco to great effect and ends up sounding a bit like the theme tune to a late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s BBC children’s Sci-Fi’ series reworked for the dancefloor. Killer bassline! Tommy turns in a deep robotic bassline to go with the vocal which he layers with some inspiring pads and a shuffling beat. A real ‘80’s sounding SynthWave treat. Russian producer Lamet’s entry brings a rad ‘80’s Funk bassline to the track and works that through a retro SynthWave tune with hints of Jan Hammer.

reMix competition ultra roundup part one: Kris Menace & The Kiki Twins

We don’t hate reMix competitions. Actually, that’s a lie, we do hate reMix competitions and every time a new one is announced it makes us shudder. For us it means that for the next few weeks our inbox is going to be full of every Dude with a cracked copy of Abelton screaming “look at me, I’ve reMixed some big artist!”. reMix competitions seem great for the original artist, they get loads of free promotion and free reMixes, but for everyone else it’s a tiresome flood of bedroom producers almost begging you to ‘favourite’ them or ‘like’ them in the most undignified ways possible. It’s like every time an even vaguely popular artist announces a reMix competition everyone looses all self respect and turns into musical savages. We do not look forward to it, and you’ll notice that more and more blogs are starting to ignore reMix competitions and their entries. The signal to noise ratio is just too much hard work for anyone. Once an innovative way to connect with fans, reMix competitions are so frequent now they just seem like a cheap way to get a load of free PR for the artist (by essentially using the desperation of unsigned producers) and a way for producers yet to prove their mettle to feel a big special with grown-up stems.

HOWEVER (in caps, because now that our rant is over we can get on with some good music), that’s not to say that these competitions don’t produce some gems. When a talented producer gets their hands on some class stems beautiful things can happen. Some of our favourite tracks of the last couple of years have been the result of reMix competitions. There’s currently two big competitions running and today we will be rounding-up some of the best of both. First up is Kris Menace’s Kiki Twins featuring ‘We Are’. We’ve already featured Final DJs reMix a couple of weeks ago. Here’s some of the best versions to have hit our inbox. Continuing a string of awesome reMixes comes The Big C, who rightly sees a big ‘90’s House vocal where there was one and reMixes accordingly with a proper Chicago vibe and a big piano line. SynthWaver Awkoder brings a cavalcade of tom rolls to the table alongside big synth stabs and twisting leads. Mac Stanton turns in a huge club oriented track, impeccable produced and really working the Diva vocals. Something different comes from Aussie Ren Riz. Taking the track to new, deeper, places Ren keeps the ‘90’s feel but puts the track squarely in the Warehouses of the time. Lastly Dusty Digital enters a bouncy version driven by arpeggios and shimmering lead lines. See, there are some good tunes in there, it’s just so much work finding them.

Awkoder re-edits Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi Lauper and Awkoder? How can this be anything but awesome? The French SynthWave guru has brought a little Nu-Disco to that table with this re-edit of Lauper’s hit ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’. It’s a really good choice for an edit, if you strip away all the cheese connotations the last two decades have dumped onto the original track, you’ll fine it;s an insanely funky Pop number with elements ripe for reMixing.

Sure a lot of people edit Disco tracks, but this right here is a masterclass in editing ‘80’s Pop hits. What Awkoder has done is pretty simple, but very effective. Subtly adding a few elements, beats and arpeggios, and chopping the original track just enough to give it a kick, and no so much it sounds ridiculous (as with so many attempts at edits) he;s given this classic track a shot in the arm and made it fit for peak time in your set!

Lissi Dancefloor Disaster & Le Prix

We took a look at Swedish ElectroPoppers Lissi Dancefloor Disaster’s video for their new single, ‘Singing My Heart Out’ earlier in the week, so now is as good a time as any to get involved with the single and a stunning reMix from one of our faves, Le Prix.

If you checked the video you’ll already know what ‘Singing My Heart Out’ is all about. It’s a rich, beautiful ElectroPop track that gets it’s serious Disco groove on. Deep rushing synths and marching drums create something instantly recognisable as Scandinavian but with just the right amount of groove in there too. It’s a rousing and involving slick of alternative SacndiPop. the main reMix, alongside a Glichty Lo-Fi version from Den Svenska Björnstammen), comes from Le Prix, who provides a laid back synthy track chock full of Le Prix’s trademark SynthWave atmospherics that compliments the impassioned vocals really well. Lissi have been around for while, but we think this is their best work to date, and hopefully the single that gains them some of the attention the so readily deserve.
