Avec Sans

Avec Sans

Got the heads up about this over on Breaking More Waves, on of the UKs best, and most passionate, music blogs. Robin at BMW predicts that London ElectroPop duo Avec Sans will soon have the music blogosphere’s tongues wagging, and he could very well be right. So let’s start the ball rolling.

Avec Sans are Alice Fox and Jack St James who, after a seriously classy cover of Bon Iver’s Perth, have dropped this début tune, the amazingly titled Heartbreak Hi. Amazingly titled ‘cos not only is it a reference to casually greeting heartbreak, but also sounds like an awesome Australian teen drama from the early ‘90’s. Now that’s wordplay! The track itself is glorious, rousing slice of razor sharp ElectroPop. With a very slight Industrial quality to it, that is tempered by Alice Fox’s impassioned vocals. It’s rare for a new ElectroPop act to come along and sound so polished and mature from the get-go. Avec Sans are going to do big things, mark my words.

Little Boots reMixed by Moon Boots

little boots

A while back, we claim that we had made our last post about Little Boots’ current single Headphones, luckily we used the caveat ‘probably’ because there another awesome new reMix. This reMix comes from another kind of boots, a Moon Boots. The American Disco producers has combined his talent for Boogie with Little Boots infectious Pop to create a pair of Little Moon Boots that’ll rock your socks.

Moon Boots gets his Nu-Disco groove on with the funkiest of the Headphones reMixes so far. Sparsely sprinkled with Tropical percussion, Boots (the Moon variety) lays on the bouncy synth bass and sparkling lead lines thick, crating a relaxed dancefloor gem that flows perfectly with Boots (the Little variety)’s vocal. It’d be a toss-up between this and Dimitri From Paris’ mix for our favourite, I think they both take the top spot for different reasons.

Ride The Universe reMixes Jane Badler

Jane Badler

Are you sitting comfortably? No? Well maybe you should skip this track until you can find yourself somewhere decent to sit, or preferably lie, ‘cos this track is so smooth that you might just loose the use of your legs and melt into a pool of Funk. And for health and safety reasons we have to suggest you minimise injury when that happens. I’ve been wanting to write about this track for a couple of months now, purely so I can use the phrase ‘rodent chomper’, as you’ll see. Dreamwave superheroes and the funkiest men in the business Ride The Universe’s latest reMix assignment is for rodent chomper Jane Badler, who is apparently not only the leader of an alien invasion force, but also a pretty slick cabaret singer too.

The Ride the Universe crew’s reMix of Yesterday’s Tomorrows starts smooth, and gets smoother. Riding not just the universe, but also a laid back groove, the foursome drop some chilled electric piano, a rolling bassline and even a hint of sax drifting across the rooftops. Even the Disco beat seems to be saying “don’t worry about it, just relax”. Balder’s cabaret style is a little grating for my personal tastes, but that can in no way obscure the amazingness that it that is this tune, the best of current Nu-Disco. Here’s hoping for a Dub. The only problem with Ride The Universe is that their productions are to few and too far between, each new tune they drop leaves us eager for the next. Did I mention it was smooth?

Dragonette’s new single

Dragonette

Canada’s finest power ElectroPop export Dragonette have just dropped their latest single, the follow up to April’s ‘Let it Go’. It’s just the kind of slinky electronic Pop that made our attention turn to Dragonette in the first place.

‘Rocket Ship’ is in-your-face Pop music, but we’d expect no less from these guys. Anthemic and quirky in equal doses is what Dragonette does best. Bouncy and fun verses slide effortlessly into big rocky choruses without either blinking an eye or asking permission. As with most Dragonette tracks it’s probably best not to worry about it too much and just let the track carry you in whatever direction it wants to. Dragonette are ready to become global overlords, just go with it. With densely layered, juggernaut Pop tracks like this, it’s best not to argue.

Dragonette’s new album, ‘Bodyparts’ will be released this September.

A Girl Called Ruth

A Girl Called Ruth

A Girl Called Ruth is a, sort of Welsh, multi-national singer/songwriter from London just starting her big push. A lot of young female singers have passed through these pages on their was to the charts, or the bin, and we’d like to think we have developed a knack for spotting the ones who have a fair chance of ‘making it’. We’d say A Girl Called Ruth has a better chance than most, her début single ‘You I See’ is catchy and slick. It’s got that standard mid-tempo safe Pop feel, but is youthful enough not to get lost in the noise.

You can catch the video for ‘You I See’ here, it’s good track that has really grown on us, but it’s a bit too Folk Pop for these column inches (yes, we do occasionally like music that falls outside this webzine’s remit), however there are two pretty dope reMixes we think out reader will dig. Our favourite is a smooth Disco-House mix from Young Favourite, who works the vocal perfectly, switching the mood from introspection to out-and-out anthem and alongside Young Favourites dance groove A Girl Called Ruth, or Ruth as we are going to be calling her from now on, starts to sound a bit Sophie Ellis-Bextor, no bad thing. Nixon offers up a warp bassed breakbeat track with an ominous tone. Whilst, obviously, we’d be secretly hoping that A Girl Called Ruth busts out some ElectroPop for her next single, in general, A Webzine Called Electronic Rumors quite likes this.

Goin’ Old School: Thompson Twins, Pamala Stanley & Vangelis

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

Some TOTP to start with, Thompson Twins with ‘Love On Your Side’ from 1983.

Pamala Stanley’s Italo fuelled DiscoPop from 1983,  ‎’Coming Out Of Hiding’.

OK, so it’s not a music video, but it is the first two minutes of the greatest movie ever made with the greatest soundtrack ever written. Vangelis’ ‘BladeRunner Main Titles’ from 1982 (although not properly released, not counting the New American Orchestra version, until 1994).

Drop Out Orchestra’s ‘The Edits’

drop-out-orchestra1

Wednesday seems like a kinda’ off the wall day of the week to release an album, but Swedish Disco duo Drop Out Orchestra have never been a pair to shy away from the off the wall. Take their new release, a who album of disco edits, mostly of ‘80’s Pop songs. there’s some real genius in that.

Brushing aside the legality of releasing an album of, essentially, reMixes of other people songs, which we’re not even going to think about, Drop Out Orchestra’s ‘The Edits’ is an awesome collection of Funked out version of tunes we all know and love. Much of the time these track go way beyond the remit of an ‘edit’, often played live in the studio with four or five musicians. The album plays like a tour through the catchier side of the ‘80’s on a bus full of drunk disco musicians. Sterling Void & Paris Brightledge’s House classic ‘It’s All Right’ gets a speedy update that keeps the vocal and piano hook intact but layers think new slabs of Boogie and a fast fingered bassline. Other highlights of the record include a smoothed over version of Robyn’s ‘Hang With Me’, which becomes a shiny lazy Disco groove. Duran Duran’s ‘Girls On Film’ is morphed into a wicked riffed, dubbed out, cosmic jam and off-the-wall-est of all Bros’ ‘When I Will I Be Famous?’ in a Moog laden Acid tweaking collision with a guitar solo. Drop Out Orchestra obviously had a lot of fun putting these tracks together, and we certainly had a lot of fun listening to them.

Patrick Baker

Sometimes wading through submissions on SoundCloud can become a chore, especially when people don’t care to find out if your publication is appropriate for their style of music. It can get pretty tedious. However, sometimes someone sends you an absolute gem. Nashville based ElectroPop artist Patrick Baker has done just that.

Dropping his latest song ‘Get 2 Know U’ over to us made out day. The best way we can describe Patrick Baker is as the American Kid Kasio. whereas Kid Kasio makes completely authentic sounding British ‘80’s Pop, Patrick makes completely authentic sounding American ‘80’s Pop. Once you listen to it you’ll get what we mean. From that era when the US music scene merged European SynthPop instrumentation and arrangement with Pop R&B and Soul rhythms and those big catchy vocals, Patrick has perfectly captured the jump-up excitement of a summer Pop hit from the late ‘80’s, everything from the signwriting, to the arrangement, to the production is spot on, and not in a parody way, or a homage way, or even in an influenced way, but in a could actually be a re-discovered recording from 1987 way. And if you don’t know what we mean, wait for the sax solo. Amazing.
