[MP3] Pat Lok edits AlunaGeorge’s ‘Outlines’

alunageorge_thumb

London Electro R&B (now) superstars AlunaGeorge’s début album, Body Music finally hit the shelves this week. It’s a record that should definitely be listened to by all, and a strong contender for album of the year, showcasing in perfect light AlunaGeorge’s unique blend of ElectroPop, R&B, Garage, House and avant-guarde weirdness. Amazing Canadian Disco/House magician Pat Lok has whipped up this tight edit of Body Music album track Outlines, which is actually more of a full on reMix despite Pat’s modesty.

Pat’s Crayola edit serves up Aluna’s sweet vocal with a side helping of big walking Disco bass and a pumping House beat. It’s a playful and deeply funky reMix, pairing that irresistible bassline with cheery Tropical hook and purcussion which give the track an instant outdoor, sunshine vibe. Which, considering that AlunaGeorge are festival darlings, makes Pat Lok’s edit of Outlines the prefect festival anthem. Keep the summer going.

[MP3] Starsmith’s ‘Clockwork’

Starsmith

Stop the press, there’s a new Starsmith track in town! It’s been what seems like an age since the man’s last single (around this time last year for the free track Zeroes), which is far too long for one of the UK’s finest production talents. Luckily, this new tune, Clockwork (another free download), more than makes up for the absence. Bring it on!

Clockwork is just full-on driving dance music. Pretty ecclectic in it’s instrumentation and arrangement, it;s fun tune and, dare we say it, a bit madcap. Like a cosmic House adventure, there’s a different sound or hook around every corner, but it all ties together nicely in a robo-funk, hands-in-the-air, big room tune. We expect this one is going to get quite a bit of play out.

[Audio] Grum’s ‘The Theme’

grum_thumb

Theme For Great Cities, the opening track of Simple Mind’s 1981 album Sister Feelings Call, is just one of those instantly recognisable tracks. The haunting synth riffs seem to send a chill right through you and informed many early 80s SynthPop tracks that followed it. Those ice tones also serve as the basis for the forthcoming new single from the man like Grum. Following on from April’s Everytime, The Theme got it’s world premiere at the weekend on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. Check it out.

The second single to be taken from Grum’s soon-to-be-released sophomore album, Human Touch, The Theme swoops straight into the main room with a vibe that is somewhere between sunrise and dystopia. Progressive House at it’s core, the tune pushes to the front Grum’s knack for the huge uplifting epics but keeps a little corner of itself edgy with those post-punk Simple Minds synths, which makes for an exciting combination. There’s even a hint of the Balearic in there as Grum deliverers all the elements of a big room floorfiller on one handy package. Definitely the stuff of the future.

[Audio] Bxentric’s ‘Surrender’ (+Kevin McKay & Phil Kelsey reMix)

Bxentric

Well, it really has been quite a while since we heard an original tune from Nu-Disco producer Bxentric. Apart from the wonderful Foolishness, which featured on Aeroplane’s In-Flight Entertainment compilation last year, you have to go way back to 2010 and tunes like Complete and Vice (awesome tracks) to grab a bit of Bxentic goodness. Keeping busy he seems to have dropped the ‘-‘ and the ‘!’, grabbed Bristolian songstress Emily Breez from Vents, and lines up a storming release for the always top Glasgow Underground.

Surrender is an atmospheric and evocative slice of huge sounding Italo Pop. Actually, surprisingly so. It’s a far more straight-up ElectroPop track than we would have expected, but we like being surprised, and we were certainly pleasantly surprised by the classic 80s sound of Surrender. Breez’s borderline Goth croon curls it’s way around the track like smoke, whist Bxentric delivers pulsating basslines, ghostly arpeggios and razor sharp retro leads, but despite all these robotic elements, Bxentric injects the track with a nostalgic warmth too. reMixes on the single come from Cosmic Kids, Kevin McKay and a couple of versions from Kevin McKay & Phil Kelsey, including their Club Mix, which serves up the track with a side order of burbling Deep House groove.

Here is the video for UK producer Louis La Roché’s forthcoming new single, Kaboom. It’s a boogie infused Disco-House tune that’s just deep enough, and just commercial enough, to do the business.

Hettie Griffiths and Rob Jarvis directed the clip which…well…see for yourself.

[MP3] Baron Von Luxxury edits Madonna’s ‘Vogue’

Madonna

Put together using “only bits from the original multitrack stems” LA DiscoPop genius Baron Von Luxxury has put together an epic, dancefloor targeted edit of Madonna’s classic 1990 ode to the Harlem gay House scene, Vogue. And it is pretty stunning.

If you’ve ever heard Vogue and thought ‘man, that’s a good groove’ then this tune is for you. Stretching that instantly recognisable House hook out into a six minute dancefloor trip, Luxxury drops fresh beats, and vocal snatches over the deep Chicago-esque hook. The vocals are, for the most part, modulated to fit the new vibe and the whole track ends up a storming deep retro House tune that would slot perfectly into and cotemporary House set. [Audio] Monsieur Adi & A*M*E’s ‘What’s Going On?’

Monsieur Adi

It feels like everyone’s coming of age this week. Two producers we’ve been championing for years are set to explode, first Mitch Murder is gearing up to drop his Mad Decent début, and now our good friend Monsieur Adi, who’s been poised for a mainstream embrace for a while now, is about to release his début single via Relentless/Sony. Not only that, but the track features the UK’s current House vocalist darling A*M*E. After a run of major projects, producing Seal, reMixing Beyoncé, Adi’s time is now.

Long time Adi fans will instantly recognise What’s Going On?. It’s a track that’s been brewing for a while, since 2010 in fact when we first heard the Frenchman’s reMix of Soul II Soul’s Back To Like (However Do You Want Me?). In the in-between years the track has been given an extreme makeover, they synths are fatter, the beats harder, the orchestration more epic and  the Caron Wheeler vocal line has been replaced by A*M*E who is sounding, frankly, better than I’ve ever heard her as she makes the track her own and delivers a truly stratospheric performance. This is the best of Adi, rousing stings, thick synth hooks, a Dreamwavey Disco style wrapped up with hard Electro production and Pop sensibilities. It’s gonna’ be huge.

[Audio] Annie’s ‘Invisible’

Annie

It’s another new track from Annie and Richard X’s forthcoming A&R EP. Following Back Together and Hold On this right here is the third taste of what to expect we’ve had so far. It;s also the hardest, and darkest entry in the EP so far, and the most in-your-face early 90s too. The track’s called Invisible, but it’s aggressive dancefloor stylings are anything but.

Right from the offset, Invisible is full-on Acid Rave. Breakbeat style TR-909 drum patterns, twisted TB-303 riffs, distorted Rave organs, this is pure white glove warehouse material. Add to this Annie offering a husky, deadpan vocal delivery, at times pitched down to gender bending extremes, and you have a track that captures the excitement of the early Rave culture whist still serving up something that Annie makes her own. So looking forward to this EP.

[MP3] Cyclist’s ‘Shine’ (+ Rogue Vogue reMix)

Cyclist

Our friend Mr. Penner is back. Next week Cyclist releases his new single on Jerry Bouthier’s Continental Records, and it’s a stormer. Featuring the vocal stylings of fellow Canadian Maiko Watson, it’s full-on vintage DiscoPop gold that comes equipped with reMixes from Rogue Vogue,  Lou Teti & Drop Out Orchestra.

That track’s called Shine, and it does what it says on the tin. Bringing tons of Nu-Disco and even more Boogie to the table, Cyclist heaps on squelchy Moog-esque basses and a wired Disco beat to create a rock solid foundation of Electro-Funk for Maiko’s massive, soulful vocals. This one could easily be slotted into most kinds of Disco or House sets and would undisputable keep the dancefloor moving. One of our favourite Chicago House acts, Rogue Vogue, deliver a slick warehouse jam, deep and funky with a glamorous twist. Pure vintage House vibes. The whole package is pretty sweet and definitely worth checking out when it drops next week.

[MP3] Zimmer reMixes Rod Stewart’s ‘Da’ Ya’ Think I’m Sexy?’

Rod-Stewart

Let’s send you into your weekend with something a little funky and a little fun. One of out favourite French producers, Zimmer, the master of horizontal Disco, has seen fit to deliver a stomping rework of Rod Stewart’s 1978 cheesefest Da’ Ya’ Think I’m Sexy?.

Not to sure what to say about this really, you’ll either love it or hate it. Zimmer whips up a pumping bassline and a killer beat to add to this monster. A sweet amount of Cosmic Disco synth warbling is along for the ride too, but your opinion of this track will still rest on whether you are amused by the tracks instantly recognisable riff and Stewart’s cringe-worthy vocals, or depressed by them. We definitely fall into the amused camp, put a smile of your face this weekend.
