Madeon’s ‘The City’

Madeon

French wunderkind Madeon’s new single, The City, kinda feels like his first proper single. Or at least it feels like it’s approaching what we were promised with his reMixes and mashups before he was taken under Deadmau5’ wings. This finally feels like he’s not trying to make a Brostep track to fit in with his new bros or trying to impress the Mau5 with how much he can sound like him.

The City, is a big, Nu-Disco flavoured ElectroPop track. Loaded with French flare. It’s not perfect, not by a long shot, the vocals, whilst pleasingly soulful, are a bit throwaway and the final production is a little too EDM (whatever that is), but this is the closest to what we expect from Madeon, in the past couple of years, that’s he’s got so far. I don;t know, maybe his original tracks, and reMixes, were just so good that once he got himself signed the odds were already against him to deliver. Maybe it would all be alright if people stopped trying to turn him into an EDM superstar and just let him do his DiscoPop thing. Anyway, this is his best release so far, let’s hop it;s heading in the right direction.

Christa Vi & Cosmonaut Grechko

Christa Vi

London based singer/songwriter Christa Vi is at it again, once more is she not showing off her own considerable musical talent, but also her knack for picking the best reMixers. her new single, Small Way Through, is a taster of what to expect from her forthcoming début album and comes backed with a reMix from Russia’s finest, Cosmonaut Grechko.

The original version of the tune sees Christa at her finest. From the school of Saint Etienne ElectroPop Christa’s music appeals because it seems so down to earth, so relatable. As she serenades, appearing effortlessly cool, over toy town drum machine beats, it’s hard not to be drawn into her musical world. Grechko rewinds to the ‘70’s with his reMix. Pure Lounge Disco bliss, complete with slowed down Tropical rhythms and and some of the smoothest electric piano you will ever hear in your entire life, turning Christa’s introspective song into a vintage holiday soundtrack. Christa Vi’s album is definitely something we are keeping out eyes out for, it’s due early next year/

Shiny Toy Guns’ ‘Fading Listening’

ShinyToyGuns

Are our favourite Electro-Rockers Shiny Toy Guns finally getting the Dreamwave fever? Their new single Fading Listening, the second to be taken from their forthcoming album III is funky as hell, and that’s not necessarily a thing you usually say about Shiny Toy Guns. Neither are ‘tropical’, ‘beach Funk’ or ‘laid back groove’, but these things might have to be said now.

Fading Listening is a surprising track from these guys. It’s also very good. It’s so surprising, I still can’t believe it’s them. Adding a little Tropical flavour to their music, as is fashionable, I could get my head around, but Fading Listening is is full-on Binary style Dreamwave. Mixing up a little beach Funk with their duet, Shiny Toy Gun deliver a laid back groove, full of nostalgia and good vibes. We were pretty interested in their upcoming new album, if it’s full of vintage Pop like this, we’re pretty excited.

Good Night Keaton reMixes Saint Lou Lou

Saint Lou Lou

If you haven’t picked up the new single from Australian girl duo Saint Lou Lou, released this week in Kitsuné, you should. It’s been stuck in my head since last week, and that’s not a bad thing. If something is going to be on repeat in your mind, then this is a pretty good song to have stuck. If you need any more convincing check out the reMix from Good Night Keaton.

Good Night Keaton, is, you’ll know by now, Aaron Shanahan, drummer form the mighty Miami Horror. having just reMixed Gigamesh he’s going from strength to strength with his deep Disco tracks. With Maybe You Good Night Keaton brings his sweeping, all encompassing, Disco to the mix which seems  to completely lift the girls catchy vocal hook to a breezy Disco place. Tropical percussion and stabbing retro synths are all present and correct, but Shanahan production style owes a little to the Indie-Elector of Miami Horror, resulting in a fresh summery slice of euphoria.

Heartbeat Stars

lazercat

Heartbeat Stars, as well as being a fantastic band name, is a little collaboration between fantastic German SynthWave girl Lazercat and fellow German Emski. We’re not sure about much about this project to be honest, or even if it’s going anywhere, only that the vocals in this track are supplied by ‘Nora’. Still, how much do you really need to know with smooth ‘80’s grooves like these?

Obsession is part Electro Boogie, part Synth Funk and a whole lot of ‘80’s R&B flavoured Pop. I don’t know if it’s the B-Boy percussion over the laid back Disco beats, the slick LA Funk synths or the sultry, purred, vocals, but something about this track screams 1986 to me. It’s teaming with the DNA of electronic Pop Soul acts from the late mid-‘80’s with just a little added Nu-Disco for good measure. Obsession is a retro joy.

Le Crayon & Oxford and Pyramid reMix Saint Lou Lou

saint-lou-lou

Australian girl duo Saint Lou Lou’s Maybe You, which we featured last month, is out today on Kitsuné Music. Amongst the pretty special collection of reMixes, which includes work from CFCF and Good Night Keaton, is this luscious Nu-Disco workout from the team-up of Le Crayon & Oxford and a spacey synth epic by Pyramid.

These two Frenchmen are amazing producers of summery beach party sounds in their own rights, but together they are unstoppable. Combining their funky, carefree Disco grooves and rousing retro synth chords together results in a pure floor filler. Hazy and loaded with twang synth sounds the reMix plays up the emotional power of the original’s vocals and works that into some big dancefloor moments. This is what retro dance is all about. Pyramid’s take on the track invites us into his world of deep, analog, cosmic synths. Working with the dreamy style of the original Pyramid layers rich, evocative, synth tones against sparse beats creating an atmospheric mood of music beauty and a touch of darkness.

Strangers reMixed by Superstringz

Strangers

Last week saw the quite long awaited proper release of London moody ElectroPop trio StrangersSafe/Pain single. The track is doing well and has been generating quite a bit of buzz over the last couple of months, especially after it’s surprise inclusion in the BBC Olympics coverage. To celebrate the release here’s a free reMix from Brazilian producer Superstringz.

The reMix isn’t featured on the single, but weirdly it’s actually better than the reMixes on the release. Superstringz manages to work a rich dance track that still adheres to Strangers general vibe. Loaded with ominous synths and Depeche Mode-esque percussion, the reMix channels Strangers euphoric melancholy into a big House track that still retains all the tracks depth. Go check out Safe/Pain right now, you won;t be disappointed.

Hemingway reMixes Gossip Culture

Gossip Culture

We featured the original version and a reMix from French SynthWave rocker Tommy, of American ElectroPop producer Gossip Culture ‘s new single, Just Fine With You, a couple of months ago. Now it;s looking like the track is getting it’s proper release soon it seems time to look at the remaining reMix on the single, from the excellent Toronto eclectic Disco producer Hemingway.

Hemingway whips up something a little different for this track. Driven by harsh drum machine beast that are very reminiscent on early Warp Records output. Those raw, shuffling House beats provide a unique backing for Hemmingway’s waves of lush synths. Ryan Sheridan’s hazy Chillwave vocal sits nicely with the reMixes cosmic synths and ‘90’s House touches. It’s a reMix that probably shouldn’t work on paper, with all these conflicting elements, but Hemingway makes everything come together in harmony, and makes it seem effortless.

Visitor reMixed by Lifelike

visitor

So as we enter the final approach to the release of Visitor’s long, long, long awaited new double A-side single, Coming Home/RNB, it time for the trickle of reMixes to begin. And there’s a lot to look forward to, with work from Viceroy, FM Attack, Bestrack and SymbolOne incoming. But first up is this reMix of Coming Home from French Touch pioneer Lifelike.

this was actually out first taste of the track, it was featured back in the June 2011 edition of Fear Of Tigers’ The Guestlist. Coming Home is an epic ElectroPop anthem to begin with, so the addition of solid dancefloor knowledge from one of the scenes leading lights cannels that uplifting energy straight to the dancefloor. Built around of of Lifelike’s trademark big hooks and a rolling bassline the reMix does a neat job of transferring the tracks euphoria to a peak time dancefloor. Kinda’ excited to hear the rest!
