Room8 (and Electric Youth)

Blimey! We’re not really sure who Ezra Reich and Nic Johns A.K.A. Room8 actually are, their email came out of the blue, but you have to give them credit off the bat for putting together all the prefect elements to relive the golden years of modern Electro. New retro synth record? Check. Featuring Electric Youth? Check. Artwork by The Zonders? Check. It’s like we’re partying like it’s 2007 (when we all pretended it was 1985)

But the namedropping doesn’t stop there, Room8’s new album, Transduction, also features Martha Davis from, The Motels, M83 saxophonist Ian Young, guitar work from Giorgio Moroder arranger Richie Zito, and was mixed by mixed with Gavin Mackillop (Human League, General Public, Heaven 17). That’s a hell of a support staff! Visions Of You, the Electric Youth featuring track off the album is a frantic, Italo tinged, ElectroPop track that perfectly pairs up Bronwyn’s sweet vocals with some classic retro synth work while Neon And Dice lets that sax flow over some rich, smooth electronics. Both track are amazing examples of SynthWave done right. Can’t wait to hear the rest of this album!”

Quinten 909’s ‘Closer To Me’

Out this week is the new monster from Dutch Nu-Disco producer Quinten 909. Bringing on-board American funkster Mayhem for a talkbox groove workout, Quinten drops Closer To Me on On The Fruit Records just in time for the warn evening of the end of the summer. Because these are pure evening jams. Time to get sexy.

You should definitely take the time (or the whole afternoon) to check out every version of Closer To Me, but for us the highlights are the Classic Mix, a soaring synth, warbling talkbox, Disco basslined juggernaut of laid back funk. Infectious and impossible not to move to, Closer To Me brings together all the elements of the groove into one giant groove machine. So what can be better than that? Three little words. Ride The Universe. The four Dreamwave warriors add a little Dub sound to their slick as all hell synthetic Disco, and with the talkbox vocals in tow it’s an unbeatable combination that just goes to prove why Ride the Universe are the top of their game.

Final DJs’ ‘No More Youth’

No More Youth is the latest monster to come from the minds of Germany’s top SynthWave duo Final DJs. Spinning a little French Touch and Italo into the mix on this track, they’ve cooked up the prefect end to the summer.

No More Youth is shot though with a sense of slight sadness, and nostalgic longing, but that in no-way stops it from being a huge party tune. Final DJs work their synthesizer love to it’s fullest with lush retro chords, sparking melodies and an overall atmosphere of electronic bliss. Part beach, part galactic, Final DJs sound is now the epitome of the post-SynthWave Nu-Disco scene. Funkier than SnythWave, but more beautifully retro than Nu-Disco. They exist in just the right spot in-between.

Kill The Hero’s ‘Surrender’

Jerry Bouthier’s new imprint Continental Records is just going from strength to strength with a flood of amazing releases. The latest of which will be the new single from Japanese EelctroPop duo Kill The Hero, a storming track called Surrender.

Surrender is a majestic, huge ElectroPop track, played out with heaps of drama. Created by Osaka DJs Taku Hero and Kila and featuring a guest turn from ’80’s Pop legends Scarlet Fantastic’s Maggie K De Monde Surrender brings big retro flavour to a sweeping dancefloor tune that mixes in a little House, a lot of Pop and an infectious hook. The reMix package is pretty stunning too. Highlights include Reflex’s groovy ElectroPop mix, full of stabbing synths and pumping bass, the return of Australia’s SHAZAM! with a hypnotic House track that mixes a ‘90’s sound with SHAZAM!’s Disco leads, Lancelot’s deep, Acid tinged, ‘90’s warehouse workout and Mannequine, who brings the Tropical flavour to the package with a rolling, euphoric slice of beach party Disco. Another mind-blowingly good release from Continental, how long can they keep this up?

Emeron & Fox’s ‘Nightmares’ single

Brooklyn SynthWave export Emeron & Fox are gearing up for the release of their new single later this month. If’s been a few months since their début, Dopecity, and this new release, Nightmares, sees a maturing of their sound and a massive collection of reMix talent.

Nightmares features American Indie-Pop singer Bit on vocals and is a rich, evocative SynthPop track that gently creeps along on spacious synths and distant cutting analog growls. Bit’s calm, husky voice tempers the eerie soundscape, all ties together with vintage machine drums. There is a ton of reMixes by some of the best producers out the. Swedish Nu-Disco trio Monitor 66 delivers a slow House jam. loaded with smooth laid back vibes and a ton of funk. The Dutch king of Electro Boogie L’Equipe Du Son’s take on the tune is suitably packed with B-Boy basslines. It’s a Nu-Disco stormer with a late ‘80’s electronic Soul feel and a sprinkling of 16-bit sounds for good measure. Follow Me drop a thick retro synth mix with a robotic Disco feel. Germany’s finest Final DJs drop one of the single standouts with an upbeat SynthWave track that keeps it’s energy levels up with wave after wave of sparkling melodies. Nightmares sees a definite advancement of Emeron & Fox’s sound, we can;t wait for the next instalment.

Louis La Roché reMixes Kate Bush

We’ve been waiting for this track to drop for a while. Last month Nu-Disco genius Louis La Roché teased us with a snippet of his forthcoming reMix of Kate Bush’s classic Running Up That Hill, and we’ve been excited ever since. Well, now the man has dropped the entire track, downloadable for free, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Louis really captures the mood of the original, he doesn’t turn the track into some cheesy dancefloor number that merely uses the original as a springboard. He’s worked the track to be dancefloor friendly, but in a way that recreates the song in that context. Pulsating House bass and funky Disco rolls actually compliment Ms. Bush’s legendary vocals when in the hands of Louis La Roché. A respectful and addictive update to the song.

Plastic Plates’ ‘Things I Didn’t Know I Loved’

The latest release from Mr. Felix Bloxsom, better known as the awesome Plastic Plates, is actually his début EP. Which seems weird as his tracks and reMixes have been gracing these pages for a while now, but if you are going to only just release your début EP, then you can do a lot worse than being picked up by Kitsuné Music as a label.

Simon Lord steps up for vocal duties on the EP’s lead track, Things I Didn’t Know I Loved is an upbeat, catchy slice of slick ElectroPop with a Disco groove. Maybe released just a little too late to catch the heights of the summer, the track nonetheless put you in a summery mood with it’s bouncy keys, infectious piano and smooth vocal. Toy’s is the perfect port-Italo track, the kind Kitsuné are really pushing these days, with a UK late ‘80’s SynthPop bassline and Disco drums the track sprinkles on a little rave lead and it’s all set to blow up dancefloors everywhere. The EP’s remaining original, More Than Love, is the deep Disco antithesis to the EP’s Poppier openers. Growling, funky basslines and a hypnotic Acid line underpin some seriously Cosmic synth work. Not on the EP, but a free download, is this reMix of the lead track from Amine Edge & Dance, who turn the track into deep ‘90’s House territory.

Lenno reMixes Atlas Genius

Following on from Fred Falke’s blistering reMix of Australian Indie rockers Atlas Genius’s new single, Trojans, Finnish master of the big room Lenno takes his urn to rework the track. Lenno has long been one of our favourite Disco-House producers and with this new mix he doesn’t disappoint.

Just one of a bunch of high-profile reMixes Lenno has been dropping in the past few months, this mix shows of the young producer’s peak time Disco sound and works it amazingly into this Indie tune, creating a big vocal House track with tons of Indie Pop swing. Lenno keeps the song itself intact, but replaces the Indie backing with lush, euphoric, piano driven dancefloor sweetness. The prefect feel-good groover.
