Touch Tone’s début single (pssst, it’s Short Circuit!)

touch tone

‘Home Away From Home’ is the first single from Touch Tone, the new alter ego of Andrew Verner, better known to you lot as Binary staple Short Circuit. Whether this draws a line under his Short Circuit work and represents a new era for Mr. Verner or if this is just a side project we are yet to find out, we’ll have to bug him about it, but it does showcase a big new sound.

A couple of years ago we referred to Short Circuit as RoboPop, with ‘Home Away From Home’ Touch Tone shrugs off that vibe and comes storming back with a huge, emotionally resonant ElectroPop sound. Like Josh Legg’s recent more Goldroom work Touch Tone seems to be getting back to the core of what Dreamwave was supposed to be about, not necessarily musically, but in an atmospheric sense. ‘Home Away From Home’ captures that nostalgic optimism that the original Dreamwave releases professed. It’s an insanely catchy, anthemic, ElectroPop track with a cool Indie vibe and some nice ‘90’s House elements. The passionate vocals flowing effortlessly over the smooth LA vibe, this is a track that feels so comfortable with itself, and could be the one to break Verner to a wider audience. I’m sure a Goldroom reMix could be arranged, that would be sick.

Jules Schimmer reMixes alloapm

alloapm

One of Manchester’s finest exports, Mr.  Jules Schimmer, has been working his retro synth magic once again, this time on Tokyo based DreamPop outfit alloapm. I almost called alloapm an ‘avant-garde DancePop outfit’, as they can get a little weird, but in a good way, and they never stop bringing the Disco, so we’ll just stick with ‘DancePop outfit’ for now and see how the post unfolds.

Anyway, Schimmer is riding high right now with a string of really top quality reMixes, and the on-going development of a bigger and bigger sound, bringing some hands-in-the-air to it’s ‘80’s core. Unfortunately most of the time it’s buried away on SoundCloud. Seriously, more people need to hear JS’ tracks, I think the word underrated really does apply here, the word on Schimmer needs to get out. Just take this new track, like I said, hands-in-the-air with an ‘80’s core. And over the bouncy retro bassline the epic stuff gets really epic. Beautifully orchestrated strings that weave in an out of a piercing lead line lift the track up to such heights and play around the highly effected vocals to produce a track with a huge scope. nostalgic and majestic at the same time. Jules Schimmer, like an ‘80’s movie, brings laughter, tears and eventual triumph in just under five mins of uplifting ElectroPop.

Leisure Council produces Taryn Manning

Taryn Manning

I’ve been sat on this track for so long, moths and months, that I was beginning to think it was never going to be released. Back when the Leisure Council (at the time still Firero) guys played me the track I didn’t really know who Taryn Manning was. Essentially, if someone has said “it’s Cherry from Sons Of Anarchy” I would have been right there, but I think as a recording artist (of quite good ElectroPop I have since discovered!) she’s not really that known outside America. Anyway, Nicky, Jeremy and Sam produced the hell out of her track ‘Moonwalk’, there’s even and awesome video, featuring Mr. Savage in fashion photographer mode and Sam channelling Guns & Roses’ Slash, that I’ve never been allowed to post. record label red-tape is really depressing sometimes.

‘Moonwalk’ is a seriously dreamy slice of what Fiero Leisure Council do best. Thick LA Funk and smooth Dreamwave combined. Talk Box laden grooves layer with huge, lush, synths and some of the sweetest sing-along vocals you’ll hear in a while. Taryn and Leisure Council seems like a match made in heaven. Not only are they a great musical match but both seem to embody a Californian party vibe that suits them and the track.  I hope this gets released some, and I hope the label make some wise choices with the reMixes.

Moustache Machine’s ‘Pluton Part II’

Moustache Machine

Parisian producer of all things Frenchy and Touchy, Moustache Machine, had just dropped an absolute stormer of a track. It’s a follow up to one of the tracks from his ‘Miami 1986’ EP of last year and whist that EP was an awesome excursion into tough French Disco, this new track is a different beast entirely.

The first ‘Pluton’ was a post-Daft Punk, Post-Justice heavy Electro Disco stomper, but ‘Pluton Part II’ some off a nice new combination of LA Dreamwave and driving Italo sounds. From the opening bars of the track, and that powerful arpeggiated bassline you know things are getting a bit retro. The big filtered Moroder-esque bass and the lush synth chords, playing out a riff so ‘80’s they need a cop show of their own, happily juggernaut along for half the songs six minute length. Then Moustache Machine’s true French epicness gets to shine with some seriously soaring solo work see everything into the finally where Funk synth, majestic piano and layers upon layers of cosmic sounds culminate in an impressive crescendo.

Dizkopolis reMixes Pastel Lite

pastel lite

Our favourite Malaysian Disco Dudes, Dizkopolis, are getting their big room sound back-on for this new reMix for fellow Kuala Lumpur based ElectroPop duo Pastel Lite’s ‘Assassin’. It’s only been a couple of month since we last heard from Dizkopolis, but it always leaves us eager for more.

The duo’s take on ‘Assassin’ brings their big retro synths and Nu-Disco grooves to the track. The original is a catchy, slightly musically abrasive noisy ElectroPop track and Dizkopolis smooth it out a little. Keeping Eff Hakim’s sultry, jazzy vocal intact and applying it to liberal helpings of lush, nostalgic synth work and digital slap bass. Dizkopolis have a knack for melding the sweet vintage sounds of SynthWave with the more broken dancefloor vibe of cut-up Nu-Disco and with the reMix they marry the two perfectly with a really emotive voice.

Lifelike & Popular Computer

Lifelike

Hold tight for some seriously French French Touch and one of the scenes pioneers Lifelike teams up with one of our favourite producers Popular Computer to drop a massive slab of dancefloor goodness. Like an invasion of French funky robots the just released new track, ‘Getting High’ hot you with a militaristic groove tempered with smooth synths.

The relentless marching of the staccato bassline and vocoded chants is like in irresistible call to dance. A mantra of synths and robots that wraps you up in it’s hypnotic groove. ON top of this you can head Popular Computer’s input in the bright, complex melodies, like a musical machine with a hundred moving parts. It’s actually really interesting to hear the meeting of these two producers distinct styles, a meeting that works really well, Lifelike knows his groove and riffs like no-other, and PC can layer thick retro synths and intricate lead lines. A good mix, check it out:

Fear Of Tigers’ new track

fear-of-tigers

Finally! After dropping one or two amazing demos and previews from his forthcoming new album, Fear Of Tigers has dropped out first taste of a proper new track. It seems like we’ve been hanging on forever for some new originals from FoT, the new album can’t come soon enough.

The new track, ‘Soliloquy’, is surprisingly Nu-Disco for a Fear Of Tiger’s track, especially the first half of the track, which takes in some cut-up big room techniques for a pumping sound, but none of this can disguise that sweet Fear Of Tigers sound. Those FoT emotional moments we all look forward too are still present and correct. The retro drum fills, and big nostalgic synths still dominate his work, and that’s the way we like it, there’s even the inclusion of some slick horns (and Sax makes everything better!) but the new injection of stuttering Funk is an interesting development. Not 100% sure of the relevance of the samples, but that doesn’t really matter. Even more eager for the new album now!

Johan Agebjörn & Le Prix reMix Lindbergh Palace

Lindbergh Palace

Wow, we haven’t featured Brooklyn based ElectroPoppers Lindbergh Palace! Over a year in-fact, and coincidentally, the last time we wrote about the was about Fear of Tigers reMix of their track ‘Day’s Don’t Fade’, that was November 2010! That track is finally seeing release as part of the ‘Day’s Don’t Fade’ single alongside this storming mix from Sweden’s top-dogs Johan Agebjörn and Le Prix.

Johan and Le Prix’s version of the track is massive, big room, undulating mix. the duo lays thick that wonderful mixture of post-Italo groove, retro SynthWave and Sweden’s knack for perfect ElectroPop all rolled into one huge tune. Lush is the best word to describe this track, roomy, cosmic synths fill the track on top of the relentless Italo bassline, up[lifting the introspective SynthPop of the original into a fully fledged Dance classic. This is a reMix in return for Lindbergh Palace’s version of Johan Agebjörn & Le Prix’s ‘Watch The World Go By’, we’re really not sure who got the better end of the deal, maybe everyone’s a winner, especially us!

digitalfoxglove’s ‘Unsteady’

digitalfoxglove

Germany’s digitalfoxglove, easily one of the finest, and most underrated Nu-Disco producers on the planet, spends most of his time these days mucking around with a bunch of Californians as one quater of Dreamwave Supergroup Ride The Universe. Luckily the man can still find time in his busy schedule to sneak in some new digitalfoxglove tunes, or at least dust off one ones and give them a new lick of paint.

As is the case with ‘Unsteady’, a warbling slice of synthetic Disco. The track is actually quite SynthWavey for DFG, the progression and sounds are pretty retro but it’s all held in place with some frantic arpeggios and Disco siren synths. ‘Unsteady’ is a nice mixture of epic cinematic and in-your-face dancefloor action and makes a nice primer to a summer of releases with DFG input including two forthcoming Ride The Universe reMixes, for Quinten 909 and rodent-chomping-monster Jane Balder, and a reMix of She’s The Queen’s ‘Talk To Me’, to be released by, well, me. So, yeah, we’re keeping him busy!
