[Audio] Leo Kalyan’s ‘Over You’

Leo Kalyan

We first featured Londoner Leo Kalyan back in September of last year with his smokey reMix of Ellie Goulding’s Burn. He’s the neighbour of a friend of ours, which is an interesting way to get a blogs attention, we might even put it on our submissions page as a requirement. Had Leo’s music been awful, things might have got a little awkward, luckily for us, and for your ears, Kalyan produces some of the slicked laid back Pop around, the kind of stuff we can seriously see propelling him to chart appeal.

His latest tune is Over You, it was produced with a little help from Karma Kid and MNEK and delivers just the right amount of swing, with just the right amount of haze, and just the right amount of Funk, to be the perfect lazy summertime tune. Underpinned with a thick, warbling, bassline, the track’s intricate production serves as an evolving, synthetic soundscape for Kalyan’s smooth as silk vocal delivery to flow over. This’ll get your head nodding by the pool.

[Audio] Cyclist & Maiko’s ‘Sunrise’

Cyclist

One of our favourite Canadian producers Cyclist had once again teamed up with fellow Canadian Maiko Watson to deliver one of the most pleasing tunes of the summer so-far. Last time these two teamed up it was for Cyclist’s awesome track Shine, this time they take it to the next level with some of the most blissful vibes you’ll hear this year.

Injecting both Cyclist’s jazzy groove and Maiko’s smokey R&B vocals into a solid Nu-House tune has produced a real ‘musicians’ Disco tune. Titled Sunrise, the track is so dripping with sunkissed nostalgia and soul that it’s hard not to get sucked into it’s smooth depth. With a slight Motown vibe hidden amongst it’s Cosmic synth Disco and poolside House façade; Sunrise had a vibe that truly lives up to it’s name. Optimistic and passionate, Mark and Maiko have served up a tune that never gets old (really! we’ve had it on repeat for ages!), and a timeless track for discerning dancefloors.

Australian Indie-Electro champs Cut Copy recently released this video for Meet Me In A House Of Love, taken from their storming album of last year, Free Your Mind.

It’s a pretty carefree clip, which fits with the bands music well. Nicely tongue-in-cheek.

Cut Copy release the deluxe version of Free Your Mind on 22nd July.

[Audio] Blank Paper’s ‘Whip’

blank-paper_thumb

Brooklyn SynthPoppers Blank Paper’s new tune sees them setting the scene for their eagerly awaited new EP. After a string of well received tunes, this foursome are finally set to unleash the real thing. Having previously treated us to Step Into My Office and Ambien Blank Paper bring us something a little more soulful. This is Whip.

Whip sneaks a little R&B flavour into Blank Paper’s spikey SynthPop. Guiding their 80s influenced sound into more Electronic Soul of the era’s territory, Blank Paper deliver their usual icy keys and live drunk, but this time add  a bit of swing and a touch of boogie. It forms a nice contract with Marie Kim’s cutting vocal delivery and the stabbing chorus is pure nostalgia. Black Paper have been a bit of a dark horse in recent months and we’re left with the feeling that we’re looking forward to their EP a lot more that we were expecting to. Bring on July.

[Audio] Ride The Universe reMix Chromeo’s ‘Jealous (I Ain’t With It)’

Chromeo

Picture the scene. It’s 2011, a sunny May. We’re still using  Five months earlier LA’s finest Dreamwavers Fiero (now Leisure Council) had teamed up with German Nu-Disco powerhouse digitalfoxglove. Calling themselves Ride The Universe they’d gained a little attention with a handful of slick reMixes, but nothing would prepare the world for what was to come. 11th May they unleashed a reMix of Canadian Funketeers Chromeo’s Hot Mess that was so massively awesome, floor slammingly funky, so relentlessly badass, that it still had the power melt brains three years later. It’s one of our favourite reMixes of all time, it set the tone for the trademark Ride The Universe sounds, and it’s why we fell in love with them.

Seconds out! Round Two! They’re bringing it back, Delivering their Chromeo reMix: the sequel, the Ride The Universe boys has got to grips with Chromeo’s recent single, Jealous (I Ain’t With It) (taken from their really quite good new album, White Women) as part of the currently running reMix competition. The prize is cash, and these four deserve it for two very good reasons. Firstly, they’ve never met, some of the prize money would go toward shipping digitalfoxglove off to LA to actually meet his band-mates and get to work on that damn album; and secondly some of the prize money will be donated to a kid’s music education charity. Sounds like a worthy cause to us. The reMix itself is pure smoothness. A blissful LA Funk vibe permeates every pore of this tune; working it’s laid back squelchy synths around Dave P’s vocals, creating an urban late night groove for the more discerning dancefloor. Complemented by starlight chimes and a sauntering rubble of bass, this one’s got everything to swing to under the city lights. Vote for this bad-boy here, never has there been a more deserving reMix competition winner.

[Audio] Miles Prower’s ‘These Days’

dana-jean-phoenix_thumb

Bristol SynthWavers Miles Prower go all power-balled with their latest tune, These Days. Taken (again) from their forthcoming new EP, Virtually Reality, this one enlists the help of SynthWave vocalist du’jour Dana Jean Phoenix and brings down the tempo a bit to serve up something for your soul rather than your feet.

These Days actually marks a distinct shift in Miles Prowers music, one we’ve suspected coming for a while now. whist Dana Jean Phoenix’s nostalgic vocals and the songs arrangement are pure 80s power ballad fare, the sound and production itself are about as far away from the 80s as you can get. Mire akin to mid-90s EBM or the more avant-guard end of that era’s SynthPop, Miles Prower invoke a raw production style and modern abrasive digital synth sounds. This makes a for a really nice contrast, caustic music with sweet vocals, and makes the track more interesting than many of it’s contemporaries. Roll on the EP!

[Audio] ATTAR! reMixes Du Tonc’s ‘Surging Memories’

du-tonc_thumb

Nearly a year on from it’s unveiling, Du Tonc’s Surging Memories is on the way to a full release, reMix package and all! The international duo of MiGHty mOUse and Matt Van Schie have picked one of their finest tracks for this, their first proper big release and amongst the luminaries chosen for reMix duties is Belgian synthesizer champion ATTAR!. Check out his version below.

As expected ATTAR! takes the track in a more robotic direction, but the man manages to leave the tracks soul intact. The laid back nature of the track allows ATTAR! to indulge in some heady Vangelis synths set to a warping sub bass. It’s a combination that has to be enjoyed loud. Taking his time to deliver the beat, ATTAR! builds the Sci-Fi mood before injecting a little Tropical sweetness into proceedings and making those cold dystopian tones get funky. Matt’s vocals glide over the track like they are looking down on the groove from on high. The whole thing is rather epic we think.
