[Audio] Du Tonc’s ‘We Can Hold On’

du-tonc

The duo of Du Tonc coming together was one of those moments in music that is just so exciting. We’d longtime been fans of Aussie Indie-Electro outfit Van She, probable the most guitary band we are fans of, who rode the crest of the 2006/2006 Electro explosion with both a string of catchy as hell ditties and some storming Van She Tech reMixes. And post Van She the guys have done the business too; Touch Sensitive, Arithmatix!, Tear Council have all been at the top of their game, as was Matt Van Schie peddling his solo line in silky smooth SynthPop that was both glorious and intimate.

So you can imagine how badass it was when, back in 2013, when Matt teamed up with another Matt to form a Matt themed double-act. MiGHty mOUse (no, we’re never going to stop writing it like that!) is a powerhouse on the Nu-Disco scene. The UK finest purveyor of Cosmic and Left-Field Disco (and more recently some Houseier offerings) MiGHty mOUse has not only been at the top of his game, producing, editing, reMixing and DJing, for the best part of a decade but also curated the Disco Circus series which are absolutely essential for anyone interested in modern dance music. His burbling analog Boogie productions are always something to look forward to.

These two Matts, together as Du Tonc, have released a string of amazing tunes in the years since they exploded onto the scene. Weaving breezy Indie-ElectroPop melodies into space age dancefloor grooves Du Tonc have consistently delivered atmospheric and intoxicating sunkissed tracks that you can just sink into. It’s no wonder the duo ended up on Belgian fine-taste label Eskimo.

So their new single has just been released, and We Can Hold On is a woozy excursion in psychedelic island Funk. The dual juggernauts of thick synth bass and a slap riff make for a rock solid core that practically compels you head to nod in time. Spacious pads and bubbling hooks intermingle with subtly guitar to form a swirling and mysterious soundtrack for Matt’s comforting vocals. No Du Tonc track would be complete without a hint of nostalgia; and We Can Hold On certainly brings it with just enough of a hint of a mid-80s summertime dream. Du Tonc have released enough material now for us to be able to say, with some certainty, that their forthcoming album should be a killer. It would be very hard to fuck it up!

The Matts are at it again. Following their surprise monster of a reMix of Pixies’ Monkeys Gone To Heaven a couple of months ago; the Matt Van Schie and MiGHty mOUse coalition of Du Tonc have rocked up with this slick reworking of the late Aaliyah’s 2002 tune Rock The Boat. The duo have a new single out pretty soon, but until then feat your ears on this bubble and laid back Disco reMix. Free download too; which is nice.

Du Tonc serve up a warm and hazy slice if the most laid back Disco sounds around. Utterly without a care int he world, this reMix of Rock The Boat totally strips you of all your troubles and orders you to flippin’ chill. Du Tonc’s trademark combination of cheeky Tropical licks, robust lazy basslines and blissed out keys transport of to a sunnier and altogether more nostalgic place while they pepper the tune with dreamy synths and a hint of talkbox. Believe us, you’ll feel 100-times better after listening to this tune.

The PIXIES

After premièring it on their recent Music To Show Aliens When They Land On Earth mixtape, Du Tonc (the globe trotting team-up of Matt Van Schie and MiGHty mOUse) have unleashed their the surprise tune from that mix. A reMix of Pixies late 80s/early 90s Indie club staple; Monkey Gone To Heaven. As a prelude to their forthcoming new single, released later this month, this reMix is bound to keep you going for a while.

Effortlessly blending a bit of Indie nostalgia (if you like that sort of thing) with their magical Tropical Disco sound, Du Tonc strip down most of the original, keeping a few grooves and vocal snatches, but manage to hold onto Monkeys Gone To Heaven‘s feel with Matt Van Schie’s trademark Disco dream basslines and the waves of lush synths and wicked little licks we expect from these two. It’s a track the you can’t help but smile about, particularly if you’re familiar with the original. Summer goodness right here.

[Audio] Du Tonc’s ‘Animals’

du-tonc

MiGHty mOUse and Matt Van Schie are back in their Du Tonc guise with the eagerly awaited follow up to January’s Every Song. Written on the radio in the US, Animals marks the start of the journey toward the duo’s début album, of which they are putting the finishing touched to right now. These guys have made a big impact on the Nu-Disco and Indie-Electro scenes since the start of their collaboration back in 2013 and we are pretty pleased they are going the album route (it’s a format we, unlike a lot of people, feel is still very important. It;s gonna’ be a big year for Du Tonc.

Animals serves up generous helpings of, what is now, Du Tonc’s trademark sound; blissful Topical-tinged Indie-Electro with a solid Disco backing. Blissful it may be, but don’t mistake it for shallow. Animals, as with the rest of Du Tonc’s output, is wildly more cerebral than it’s contemporaries, with Matt Van Schie giving an emotional and intelligent performance over a intricately crafted combination of summery ElectroPop and retro-futuristic Cosmic Disco. As ever, Du Tonc deliver something for both the head and the feet.

du-tonc

It’s been a while we’ve been waiting for the next track from the coalition of Matts Du Tonc. International jet-setters MiGHty mOUse and Matt Van Schie have chosen to kick off this year with a track that they’ve been kicking around for a while, honing it to perfection. Every Song is the first track from the Indie-Disco duo to be picked up by Eskimo Recordings; we can see that partnership between the acclaimed label and these guys being a long and fruitful one.

Breezy Island vibes kick off Every Song; which is possibly the most 80s track from Du Tonc to date. A Disco New Wave oddessy with a swirling mixture of rolling bass and gently stabbing synths liberally peppered with Island guitar that gives off a Tropical early-80s Blondie vibe. This all makes of a blissful soundtrack for Matt (the Van She one) to deliver a summery croon that exudes an effortless cool. January feels like July with Every Song dripping out of the speakers.

[Audio] ATTAR! reMixes Du Tonc’s ‘Surging Memories’

du-tonc_thumb

Nearly a year on from it’s unveiling, Du Tonc’s Surging Memories is on the way to a full release, reMix package and all! The international duo of MiGHty mOUse and Matt Van Schie have picked one of their finest tracks for this, their first proper big release and amongst the luminaries chosen for reMix duties is Belgian synthesizer champion ATTAR!. Check out his version below.

As expected ATTAR! takes the track in a more robotic direction, but the man manages to leave the tracks soul intact. The laid back nature of the track allows ATTAR! to indulge in some heady Vangelis synths set to a warping sub bass. It’s a combination that has to be enjoyed loud. Taking his time to deliver the beat, ATTAR! builds the Sci-Fi mood before injecting a little Tropical sweetness into proceedings and making those cold dystopian tones get funky. Matt’s vocals glide over the track like they are looking down on the groove from on high. The whole thing is rather epic we think.

One of the nice things about two talents like MiGHty mOUse and Matt Van Schie working together is that you get a wealth of influences and interests brought to the table. The backgrounds of the Du Tonc members set themselves up for a nice ecclectic mix of tunes that can effortlessly span Nu-Disco and Indie-Electro encompassing the best of both.

As displayed here with their latest offering, a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s I’m On Fire. Wielding an easy groove, the twosome deliver a slo-mo Disco churner that was, fittingly, given birth when the song cam on the radio is they drove through Arizona. With chirpy synths and a warm bassline complimenting Matt’s gentle vocal, the track ends up sounding rather cinematic and conjuring up images of the road trip that inspired it.
