Johan Agebjörn’s ‘Casablanca Nights’ revisited

Johan Agebjörn

Swedish purveyor of all things ElectroPop and Disco Johan Agebjörn’s ‘Casablanca Nights’ album was one of our top records of last year, a series of collaboration with some of the best electronic artists and SynthPop singers in the world and some cracking songs. Now two of those cracking songs are getting repackaged in some new and interesting ways.

First up, ‘Watch The World Go By ‘ is finally seeing the release of it’s reMix package. We’ve been waiting for it for a while since it was originally going to be released under the name Plexi Grace. Now, a change of label to Paper Bag Records and it’s back to plain old Johan Agebjörn & Le Prix and a whole host of awesome reMixes. You should all be intimately familiar with the, Lake Heartbeat featuring, slice of ElectroPop bliss by now, and if you’re not what have you been doing with the last year? The reMix package kicks off with German DJ Jam El Mar’s ‘Tripomatic Fairytale’ mix, and pulsating crossover between Nu-Disco and Deep House with some nice eclectic percussion. The track is basically an audio sunrise and sets up the EP perfectly. Along side a majestic workout by Young Galaxy and a couple of smooth reMixes from SynthPoppers Lindberg Palace (a name we haven’t heard for a while) you’ll find Nicolas Makelberge’s version which melds a few frantic elements and tempers them into a chilled Balearic retro Pop track. In addition to this release we also have 80’s Disco legend Alan Cook with an Agebjörn &  Lovelock (Steve Moore) produced cover of ‘Casablanca Nights’ title track, and the three of them go full on Italo amazingness here. I cannot stress how good this track is, it’s not even 80’s Italo influenced, it just is pure 80’s Italo. The track’s tempo has been increased, the arpeggios fly and the both the music and vocals are majestic and shot through with that dramatic darkness that calls for a video shot in a dark, neon lit, alleyway that’s inexplicable full of smoke, but it;s in a studio anyway.  Amazing Stuff.

Sohight reMix Enterprise

Enterprise

Russian duo Sohight are on a roll right now, their couple of releases have been total jams and they are carving a nice little groove for them selves in the Disco tinged retro synth arena. Now they are lending their reMixing skills to Mexican producer Enterprise’s new single ‘Stages’.

‘Stages’ is a huge slice of deep Funk and Disco from Nico Raibak with an absolute killer bassline, a massive analog groove. The kind of bassline that sounds like Optimus Prime and Megatron fighting at Studio 54. Real apocalyptic Disco stuff. Squealing Korg synths and lush retro chords power over the track, it truly is a juggernaut of Disco. Doing anything to it is a tough job, Sohight are brave Dudes! their reMix smoothes things out a little, whilst the original smacks you in the face with Disco, Sohight gently wipes off the blood with their Boogie. Built around a slick Disco lick and some warbling synths. Sohight bring a little sext back to the dancefloor after Enterprise has brutalised it.

Big C reMixes The Wheel Wells

The Wheel Wells

So, I think I have this subconscious belief that bloggers make shit producers. I know, I know, it’s completely unfounded. I don’t even know where it comes from (although to be honest, a lot of stuff I have heard from bloggers has been shit). I think it might be because I see them coming at making music from the wrong angle, writing about music and thinking ”I’ll have a go” rather than feeling the passion to create. However, as a big fan of rationality I do love being proved wrong and Big C, who maybe known to you as author of Big C’s Music, is having a mighty crack at making me look like a fool.

The Wheel Wells, Big C’s latest target for reMixing, are a Canadian duo with an Indie-Dance sound who’s ‘Morning Light’ you might already be familiar with, and if you’re not there a good chance you are about to.  Big C’s ‘Beachhouse’ mix does exactly what it says on the tin, Tropical vibes abound with a laidback beach party Disco sound. The thing that stuck me the most about this mix is that from someone who up until about a week ago I didn’t really consider a ‘producer’ how polished it is. The mix could use a little punch, but on the whole it’s a balanced and slick mixdown, something that many new producers get terribly wrong, and that shows there’s latent talent in there. So yeah, Big C has made the jump from being ‘a blogger who does some productions’ to ‘a producer who sometimes blogs’ in my head, and me being a stubborn bastard that is a really hard jump to make.

Cut Slack’s new EP

cut slack

The new Cut Slack EP is here! This Portuguese producer is someone we’ve been keeping close tabs on ever since he entered one of the standout mixes in Fear Of Tigers’ The Adventured Of Pippi Longstrump’ reMix competition. He’s got a slick, rich, SynthWave style that really appeals to us. Cinematic and rousing, his tunes notable kill. And his new EP is absolutely free.

This self titled collection sees Cut Slack mixing in a little Disco and a little 80’s guitar into his retro synth sound. The opener, ‘Daybreak’, is about as good as SynthWave gets, it’s a big powerful into that sets you up for a EP’s worth of synth nostalgia with a rock attitude. After the Nu-Disco and guitar solos of ‘T.M.H.S.R’, ‘Never Let You Down’ is a low down dirty Disco tune that exemplifies Cut Slacks style. a sexy Dancefloor groove with guitar shredding over the top, a strange combination maybe, but one that works so well and sounds like the soundtrack to the best buddy cop movie. ‘Lana’ brings the smooth with rolling vocoded vocals and lush electric piano. It’s summery vibe is a nice, chilled, middle point to the EP. A sunset respite before the party rap of ‘Move To The Beat’. For a first EP, Cut Slack has done an amazing job, at a brilliant price. This EP deserves your attention.

Radio INK + Muffin + Rogue Vogue

Radio Ink

When Australian ElectroPoppers Radio INK returned to our consciousnesses in February with their  with their ‘Who We Are Tonight’ single we welcomed them back with open arms. A massive comeback single for a band who get massive ElectroPop just right. Uplifting sing-a-long brilliance. Now they are doubling the excitement by dropping a reMix package and bringing some awesome talent with them.

Fellow Aussie Muffin is no stranger to reMixing Radio INK, but he released so rarely that we eagerly consume anything he puts out. The man is a Dreamwave genius who, with his version of the track, effortlessly merges the rich ElectroPop of Radio INK with with his own retro powerhouse. Perhaps more Poppy than Muffin productions we are used to, but this is no bad thing. Muffin brings an almost The Sound Of Arrows quality to the track in it’s pure euphoria, and when the solo kicks in, it’s enough to make a grown man weep with joy. Rogue Vogue take a deeper road with the track. First heard on The Magicians last Magic Tape, Rogue Vogue’s reMix is deep early ‘90’s House. The Sound of Chicago completely changes the cut-up vocals into a smooth jackin’ monster.

Punks Jump Up & Chromeo’s Dave 1 with Oliver & Mickey

Punks Jump Up

The new Punks Jump Up single, ‘Mr. Overtime’, as I’m sure you’ll have heard by now, is a blinding slice of DiscoPop featuring the dulcet tones of none other than Chromeo’s Dave 1, doing a little overtime himself we see. I think we can pretty much all agree that Chromeo are probably the best band in the world working today, and if you don’t agree see them live and come back to me. Whilst Dave lending his production chops isn’t that rare, hearing his voice on a non-Chromeo record is something particularly interesting.

So, can ‘Mr. Overtime’ live up to the be the sum of it’s parts. Why yes, yes it can! Slick and Funktastic with a slightly dark edge to it, the track comes with a package featuring some of the best reMix talent around. Alongside Gigamesh we get the almighty double Oliver combo of Oliver who layer on thick vocoding and the kind of sliding synth bass that you can get totally lost ing. Oliver’s awesome mix of LA Dreamwave with a French Touch flavour is simply perfect for this tune. It still sounds slightly edgy, but the squelchy Electro Funk riffs are going to slay whatever dancefloor it drops on. A man like Mickey is up next, bringing with him the essence of late ‘80’s discotheques. With a retro good-times bassline that seems to compliment Dave 1’s vocals Mickey starts to bring in a Tropical flavour, but with a twist. This is’80’s Tropical grooves. All the palm trees are inflatable here! A stunning, and highly recommended single that we’re going to be hearing a lot from this summer.

Sébastien Tellier’s ‘Cochon Ville’ Video

I suppose I had better mention that Sébastien Tellier’s new video for the awesome ‘Cochon Ville’ is pretty NSFW. I don’t usually mention that as I figure we’re all adults here and the idea of getting people into trouble at work amuses me. I mention it now though, as I don;t really want to get anyone fired. So, basically, boobs and cock. You have been warned.

Alexandre Courtes, who recently did Justice’s ‘On ‘N’ On’ clip, directs this Tellier worshipping orgy of stuff, and orgying. With Tellier as blue god overseeing his Disco minions and whipping the up into a state of ecstasy, the video is sure to draw some attention. Come for the clip, stay for the ace tunes.

‘Cochon Ville’ is the first single taken from Sébastien Tellier‘s new album ‘My God Is Blue’ available today via Record Makers.

New track from Breakbot

Breakbot

It has been far, far, far, far too long since there was some proper new Breakbot material. And now that there is, we find ourselves surprised by it. This track ‘Programme’ is the B-Side to his forthcoming new single, itself a precursor to the long awaited album ‘By Your Side’ which Ed Banger is set to released in September.

Surprising because, ‘Fantasy’ and ‘Baby I’m Yours’ this ain’t. But it does seem to follow the whole recent Ed Banger trend, they seem to ebb and flow into styles as a whole label, which is actually quite cool. ‘Programme’ kicks of in true Breakbot fashion with some slick disco with a raw bass and lush synth chords. Soon though, the synth snare from A Flock Of Seagulls’ ‘Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)’ turns up and brings some epic guitar soloing in tow and the whole track turns into an unexpectedly experimental, but ultimately melodic journey through a beautiful arrangement. It’s a really good peice, maybe not quite the second coming some people are making it out to be but it is only a B-side, that has us very interested to hear what the new album holds. Musically, ‘Programme’ is a stunning peice of work, massive respect to Breakbot’s talent, it just caught us a little off guard. But that’s a good thing, right?

Lenno & Martin Solveig

marrtin-solveig1

Hot on the heels of wunderkind Madeon’s reMix of Martin Solveig’s new single ‘The Night Out’ comes another of our favourite up-and-comers Lenno’s version of the track. Madeon’s an absolute genius, there some kind of freaky latent talent going on there that is so far beyond and normal human ability that it’s possible he’s a extra-terrestrial visitor sent here to study homo sapien reactions to Disco, but if, gun to our head, we had to pick between Madeon and Lenno, I think Lenno would just take the prize. His smooth but energetic French Touch gets us every time.

So, to his reMix. Solveig’s made some awesome reMix talent decisions (A-Trak also contributes a blinder) and in contrast to Madeon’s powerhouse track, Lenno drops something slightly more slick. The lead riff the Finnish producer has worked into the track is pure dancefloor jump-up energy and rides effortlessly over the kind of bassline that you could work into any set as it rolls along, unobtrusive, yet unconsciously building you to the big drop. As far as we’re concerned, this is the pick of the reMix package. I guess that makes us ‘Team Lenno’ then? Ah man, does that mean we have to change all out user icons?

Zimmer’s April Tape, ‘Desert Drive’

zimmer

Zimmer – April Mixtape ‘Desert Drive‘ = Zimmer must be knackered! It only seems like a couple of weeks ago he dropped his March tape, then he released the reMix EP of ‘Horizontal Disco’, now he;s straight back on the horse with this new mix. The ‘Desert Drive’ has a slightly relaxed feel to it, full of chilled, dreamy Disco. It’s all dirty rolling basslines and soaring synths. Sit back and enjoy.
