Big C reMixes Alex Metric & Charli XCX

Yes, we are still obsessed with Charli XCX’s new single, You’re The One. No, we don’t really need an excuse to post about her, but it doesn’t hurt that the man Big C has dropped a new reMix of XCX & Alex Metric‘s End Of The World. Careful now, it’s not what you’re expecting.

What we have here is probably the cream of Big C’s productions so far. What it is also is a big Dub tune. Coming from Bristol I have a massive soft spot for Dub, especially electronic Dub, it’s kinda’ in my blood, and Big C works it here to pretty stunning effect. Not only is the reMix innovative, it’s pretty slickly produced too. It’s a reMix that isn’t just going through the motions, it really understands the original and works with it in a completely organic way. In retrospect the original totally opens itself up to a Dub mix, but it’s taken Big C jumping on that to see it to it’s fullest potential.

Big C reMixes The Wheel Wells

The Wheel Wells

So, I think I have this subconscious belief that bloggers make shit producers. I know, I know, it’s completely unfounded. I don’t even know where it comes from (although to be honest, a lot of stuff I have heard from bloggers has been shit). I think it might be because I see them coming at making music from the wrong angle, writing about music and thinking ”I’ll have a go” rather than feeling the passion to create. However, as a big fan of rationality I do love being proved wrong and Big C, who maybe known to you as author of Big C’s Music, is having a mighty crack at making me look like a fool.

The Wheel Wells, Big C’s latest target for reMixing, are a Canadian duo with an Indie-Dance sound who’s ‘Morning Light’ you might already be familiar with, and if you’re not there a good chance you are about to.  Big C’s ‘Beachhouse’ mix does exactly what it says on the tin, Tropical vibes abound with a laidback beach party Disco sound. The thing that stuck me the most about this mix is that from someone who up until about a week ago I didn’t really consider a ‘producer’ how polished it is. The mix could use a little punch, but on the whole it’s a balanced and slick mixdown, something that many new producers get terribly wrong, and that shows there’s latent talent in there. So yeah, Big C has made the jump from being ‘a blogger who does some productions’ to ‘a producer who sometimes blogs’ in my head, and me being a stubborn bastard that is a really hard jump to make.

Beyoncé reMixes; don’t ask again.

Have you ever seen that episode of hit-and-miss medical comedy Scrubs where the main characters see a report on TV about some new health scare and all simultaneously let out a groan of exasperation as they know that the hospital, where they work, is now going to be flooded with needy members of the public buying into the latest medial panic? Well that’s how it feels to be a music blogger when a big name, such as Beyoncé, announces a reMix competition.

That said, here’s some reMixes of ‘End Of Time’ we have liked. Monsieur Adi’s mix is unsurprising stunning work. A deep, majestic, euphoric big room jam that’s got to be a god bet for winner. Max Action delivers a top quality buzzing, cut-up, Electro mix. The reMix from Final DJs sees them getting a bit more of their Funk on than usual, mixing it up with their bright SynthWave to smooth effect. Ren Riz take a shiny Disco approach with some huge chords and gets every last drop of groove out of those horns. Lastly Big C serves up an ‘80’s Pop jam, which is actually a pretty good approximation of what this track would have sounded like if it was releases in 1986.

Right, don’t expect any more.
