The Knocks reMix Haim

haim

Hot on the heels of their reMix of Two Door Cinema Club’s Sleep Alone (alongside the release of their own The Feeling), those purveyors of the finest New York style Disco, The Knocks, have turned their attention to much-hyped LA Indie girl-trio-and-a-dude-drumming Haim.

The Knocks take that 90’s R&B shuffling quality Haim’s vocals display and run with it, weaving Forever into their summery, pool party Disco sound. The New York based duo indulge a little of their Tropical side, mixing an LA Dreamwave feel into their usual NYC Disco. I know this will be a controversial opinion on the music blogosphere but Forever works so much better with The Knocks laid back dance sound than it does with it’s original stripped down groove Rock.

Scarlet Soho’s ‘Solo KO’ EP

scarlet soho

Early November see the release of the new EP from one of the UK most underrated Indie-ElectroPop outfits, Scarlet Soho. Hot on the heels of their insanely infectious When The Lights Go Out single comes Solo KO, which sees the band expressing their deeper, more passionate side after the pervious single’s catchy Pop gloss.

We caught the video for Solo KO earlier in the week, it’s an ominous sounding track but in the tradition of the best British SynthPop of the ‘80’s, it’s melancholy is shot through with an injection of optimism. A deep warping synth bass underpins the track with a sombre mood, but this is tempered with some lush stings and James’ passionate vocal. By the time the chorus hits, in all it’s anthemic glory, it’s time for a hands-in-the-air moment. Solo KO is flipped with Make The Final, a pulsating, stripped down, SynthPop track with a nice duelling vocoded/clean vocal. Make The Final would nicely soundtrack a training montage in an ‘80’s flick (so just keep that in mind next time you have an enemy to defeat or an obstacle to overcome), just right for a synthetic inspirational timeout. The EP also hold’s a beautiful, rich, vintage SynthPop reMix of Solo KO by Swedish trio Candide and a rough and ready Electro-House mix from Hamburg’s Teenage Mutants, who deliver chopped up vocals and chainsaw synths over a shuffling Techno beat. Solo KO is the prefect compliment to When The Lights Go Out, showing two sides to Scarlet Soho, who knows what EP number three will hold?

LexiconDon’s ‘City Lies’

lexicondon

We’ve Burned and wondered Where We Went, now we can get our third taste of Dreamwave original gangsters LexiconDon’s new album in the form of City Lies, their new single. We’ve seen a variety of new sounds in these previews of the album, as Alex stretches his musical wings, and City Lies adds some new flavour to the mix.

There’s a raw feel to the track. Machine beats, white noise snares and slight distortion on the vocals give LexiconDon’s laid back LA sound a new live, garage dimension. One of LexiconDon’s greatest strengths is Aex’s narrative in his songs. More than many other bands, you always get a real sense of what he’s singing about, capturing the mood and imparting it to the listener perfectly. This strength shines through in City Lies, both musically and lyrically as Alex wears his heart on his sleeve, lamenting the complications of relationships set to a late night urban soundtrack.

Le Roi Crocodile

Le Roi Crocodile

Le Roi Crocodile is Vancouver based musician who is making some really interesting spacey Electro-IndiePop. Amazingly, this guy is just 16 years old, which is totally overshadowed by the maturity in his music.

His latest track is Youth Decay, which is a combination dreamlike Chillwave soundscape and summery Indie hit. With an endearing BedroomPop vibe, this young producer conjures up a reverb-washed laid back groove and an infectious hook. Waves of warm synths spill over Youth Decay, spacing themselves out to make room for the punchy lead riff and the half-sung/half-rapped vocals. This is only his second production but already he has the Lo-Fi Chill thing down pat, Le Roi Crocodile is definitely a name to keep an eye on in the future.

Scarlet Soho’s ‘Solo KO’ video

Solo KO is the powerful title track from UK Indie-Electro heroes Scarlet Soho’s forthcoming new EP. It’s an anthemic slice of impassioned electronic Pop that’ll be sure to provide some hands-in-the-air gig moments.

Steve Hogg directs this clip which just goes to prove, alongside Raging Bull, that boxing looks better in Black and White.

The Presets’ ‘Pacifica’

The Presets

2007/08 was pretty much soundtracked by Australian ElectroPop duo The Presets. 2005’s Beams was impressive as hell, but with 2008’s Apocalypso they really hit their stride, both capturing and defining the mood at the time. Club dancefloors filled within the first couple of bars of a The Presets song and their live show what something really special. It’s been four years since Apocalypso. Music has moved on, the mood has moved on. Four years is a long time for their crown to be passed around. Now, with very little promotion (handled quite badly if you ask us) The Presets’ new album, Pacifica, is here and, despite mis-management of what should have been one of the electronic music events of the year, it’s everything we could have wished for and so much we couldn’t have imagined.

The first two single from the new album, Youth In Trouble, and Ghosts were surprising and unexpected. Youth In Trouble pounds onward with an ominous, Underworld-like, Acid groove and Ghosts has divided opinion with it’s Electro-sea-shanty call-to-arms. We loved both singles, but they weren’t The Presets most people were expecting. They are also the first two tracks on the album, and once you hit track three, Promises, all fears of an hour of introspective navel-gazing are laid to rest with a huge, very ‘80’s sounding ElectroPop tune, with an infectious chorus, that, basically, sees The Presets picking back up their crown going “oh, did I leave this here?”. From there on in Pacifica soars. No-one can mix musical experimentation and integrity, lyrical intelligence and poetry, and damn catchy Pop hooks quite like The Presets. The album effortlessly swings from the abrasive robo-Techno of the likes of Push and Fast Seconds to slick DiscoPop in the likes of Fall and the ‘90’s vocal House of Surrender. It;s on Adult’s Only that you really feel like you are back in the world of The Presets, a six minutes dark epic, deep and tribal with that evil The Presets sense of humour. We will admit to being worried about The Presets comeback, we didn’t need to be. Two of the best songwriters in the world are working in the field of eclectic, smart, electronic music. We should be really thankful for that. Essential.

Citizens! reMixed by Kitsuné’s Gildas

Citizens!

Fresh from premièring the video for the forthcoming re-release of London ElectroPop outfit Citizens!True Romance, we are treated to on of the reMixes of the track. This one comes from Kitsuné Music main man Gildas.

Despite the title, it was actually Cassian’s Torpical reMix of this track that featured on Gildas Kitsuné Club Night Mix #2 album. But whatever the title, this is one of the best mixes of the track we’ve heard so far. Gildas adds some really nice punchy bass and a thick dance beat. It works so well, and one of those track that builds and builds into a cosmic collision of Citizens!’ eclectic instrumentation and Gildas’ dancefloor nouse. Citizens! début album, Here We Are, drops later this year.
