The C90s reMix The Egg

The Egg

British Indie-Dance outfit The Egg, of pre-Guetta Walking Away fame,  released their Catch single earlier this month. It’s a nice mix of analog Disco and gangly Indie guitar stuff. The best thing about the single, though, is this reMix from London Disco duo The C90s. Complete flipping the track around, no longer tis there melodic abrasiveness, in it’s place The C90’s bring the smooth…and the cowbell.

Oh yes, it brings the cowbell, gets funky with it, filters some beats and drops a bouncy as hell analog bassline. It’s the prefect Disco combination. The shuffling hats give the rhythm a little twist, and seems to usher the track ever forward. And the point to track is driving toward is the final chorus, whit it’s the uplifting addition of a solo line that carries the track on it’s shoulder to new heights. This isn;t sa summery track in the same was the Tropical masses are, this is a late night, summer in the city, track. Hot urban Disco.

Joy Division reMixed by Christian Strobe

Joy Division

Generally, going anywhere near Post-Punk icons Joy Division with your reMixing intentions is a very brave, and normally doomed, move. Having a crack at Love Will Tear Us Apart seems like a bit of a futile move. Christian Strobe, however, puts in a valiant effort that deserves, at the very least, recognition.

The German producer’s take on the classic drops a bit of a Tropical and a bit of a Balearic sound into the mix. Which, admittedly, isn’t the first vibe we think of when we consider Joy Division. But Strobe seems to make it work, the big room House tone actually flows reasonable well with the song. Strobe even makes the chorus pretty euphoric. Despite being a match made in hell, the Christian Strobe reMix of Love Will Tear Us Apart works, it shouldn’t, but it does. I guess that just something we’re all going to have to live with from now on.

Moscow Youth Cult’s ‘Happiness Machines’

Moscow Youth Cult

Moscow Youth Cult have graced these pages a few times since their inception. The Nottingham based Indie-Electro experimentalists have drawn us into their Sci-Fi world on more than one occasion and now with the forthcoming release of their début long player, Happiness Machines,  we get to spend a whole hour amongst their post-Industrial funky soundscapes.

After the buzzing, and strangely emotional, atmospheric intro of Shimmer Star has allowed your mind to wander to distant, fantastical, places, the pounding kick of Love>Lore shakes you right back to reality and drops you firmly in the middle of a swirling cloud of sound roped together with an unusual future funk. As the record continues, with a few tracks you might have heard before, Iris, Phase IV, Survivasm, it feels like a fresh take in Moscow Youth Cult. Together in a full length album you get more of a sense of MYC than you did in the singles an EPs. Amongst the Cabaret Voltaire noise there are some blissfully euphoric songs, with an almost Chillwave tone to them. Actually, this whole record sounds a bit like if Sarah Connor from Terminator was actually Chillwave, and Chillwave was being chased by the Terminator, but then got all badass at the end in a factory, or something. What we are trying to say, is that if you add the reverb washed Dreamlike  laments of Chillwave, those beautiful moods, add add them to the relentless march and sonic adventurousness of midlands post-Industrial, you get Moscow Youth Cult (who you occasionally get the feeling have been hanging out with Disco). Does a melting pot like this work? Well, if you listen to tracks like Happiness Machines, the title track, with it’s distant, space age, funk or the factory Pop of Break-In Work-Out the answer is a resounding ‘yes’. And there are time when it feels like it shouldn’t, but it really does. Moscow Youth Cult’s Happiness Machines is definitely worth checking out.

Jupiter reMixes Midnight Magic

Midnight Magic

Brooklyn Indie-Disco orchestra Midnight Magic released the track Calling Out back in April as part of their What The Eyes Can’t See mini album. Now the live analog funk track has been given a new lease of life by Parisian ElectroPopsters Jupiter, who bring their unique musical slant to that track, and life everything they touch the reMix comes off sounding effortlessly cool and quirky as hell.

Dropping straight in with a 909 beat, we are soon treated to Jupiter’s own brand of Disco wrung through a C64 as the French duo add a little ChipTune to their eclectic mixing bowl of sounds. Giving the track a nice vintage buzz, and playing with the vocals until the become another instrument, Jupiter drag the track straight to the dancefloor, layering more and more elements until Calling Out becomes a retro dance frenzy. One again Jupiter have proven they aren’t afraid to go against the grain, mix things up a little, and just have fun with their reMixes.

Future Unlimited’s new track

future-unlimited

Future Unlimited are a Nashville based Indie-Electro, verging in ElectroPop, with a Chillwave outlook, duo who we’ve written about a few times in these inches. Their EP, EP, released earlier this year was a masterclass in floaty retro Dreampop and now the twosome is back with a new tune, Lightweight Eyes, that further cements their reputation as purveyors of vintage emotional dance greatness.

Lightweight Eyes is probably up their with their best track to date, Golden, a multi-layered, swirling track. A Dreamwavey retro ElectroPop track washed with Chillwave’s reverb sounds more contemporary that you’d think. This tune shines, everything about it is shimmering and bright, but in soft focus. The hazy synths blend and evolve together like a nostalgic dream, instantly confortable but somehow distant,  while the vocals dance around, weaving in and out of the song. There’s an almost shoegaze quality to this track, except it’s far too dancefloor friendly to be truly ‘gazey. This, more Electro direction,  definitely has us eager for more from Future Unlimited.

Rüfüs’ ‘This Summer’/’Selena’ reMixes

Rüfüs

Australian Indie-Electro trio RüfüsThis Summer has been out for a while now in single form, being on e of the Anthems of this year. Enter London’s ElectroPop don Jerry Bouthier and his Continental Records imprint to bring the track, once again, to the forefront with a reMix package of This Summer and Selena.

With a track this epic, it would be hard to do any wrong, but this collection of reMixes exceeds expectations. Mr. Bouthier’s own JBAG head up the EP with an amazing DiscoPop reMix that is just everything you’d want from a fun summer tune. A bouncy bassline and thick retro chords makeup a huge, all encompassing sound that truly does the song justice and, more. Perfect drum fills and an insanely catchy hook are the icing on the cake. This track is going to get caned. Rüfüs themselves contribute a deep Techy take on This Summer, full of Techno intricacies and moody chords this is one for late night in Berlin, with the added bonus of a big Dreamwavey lead. Nu-Disco newcomer Lancelot has really impressed us this year, and to this package he contributes another quite deep mix, this time with more of a synthetic Disco feel as he takes Selena and works it into almost a Disco Dub. The single also contains work from, with a droning Techno mix, Parachute Youth with a chaotic Dreamwave mix and slick ‘90’s House take on Selena from Frames.

Black Strobe’s ‘Boogie In Zero Gravity’ EP

Black Strobe

Next week sees the release of Black Strobe’s Boogie In Zero Gravity EP. Having spent the last few months releasing some excellent tracks solo Arnaud Rebotini returns to the Black Strobe moniker as the sole surviving original member, and it seems he’s using Black Strobe to experiment and indulge in a new sound. Whilst the ElectroClash beats and seedy Disco synths that are Black Strobe’s trademark remain, we are also treated to an injection of Southern Blues.

Kinda’ building on 2007’s Burn Your Own Church, but with more swagger, and more soul and more electronics. Where as Burn Your Own Church was pretty much a straight up Rock album, Boogie In Zero Gravity is the sound of the deep south, if Moog’s were dead cheep in the down by the bayou. A mixture of soulful swamp Blues and Chicago House, Boogie In Zero Gravity, and it’s flip side White Gospel Blues are definitely unique, if nothing else. But also brilliantly atmospheric. The reMix package is pretty huge, alongside work from Jeremy Glenn with a brilliant man-machine track and and Drop Out Orchestra sweet laid back Disco (neither of which we’re allowed to play you more than 1m30s of, which isn’t worth bothering with really) is a mix from Elijah Collins, a man making a lot of waves recently. He delivers an atmospheric space Disco track. Slightly brooding and very electronic, Collins brings a different side to the Blues. Fellow Blackstrobe Records producer Museum provides a bonus mix which again, retains the Bluesy fell, but channels that through a vintage synth machine that spits out a pulsating analog workout.
