Leitbur

Leitbur are an LA based SynthPop outfit, well I say outfit, it’s actually one guy, Jaron Widman (who is one ‘l’ away from having an top tier name) who was amongst the winners of the recent Cinnamon Chasers reMix competition. Seizing the opportunity to gain a little more exposure Leitbur is wasting no time in releasing a new EP.

The ‘Think Of Tomorrow’ EP is out next month and holds five tracks of dreamy Californian SynthPop, which is actually quite an interesting twist on things. By now we’re all quite used to the west cost vibe in Electronic music. From Binary’s Dreamwave stable or DâM-FunK’s LA groove to the likes of Leisure Council and Oliver’s smooth take on Nu-Disco, there seems to be an LA atmosphere that permeates the music, kinda’ relaxed, kinda’ optimistic, loaded with nostalgia. We’ve seen it applied to Disco, ElectroPop, Electro but I think this is the first time I’ve heard it in a SynthPop context, and it works really well. The title track is a pumping, epic, slice of SynthPop with a contrasting summery feel and a streak of melancholy that really sit comfortable. There’s a slight bit of Italo in there too that gives it a nice dancefloor slant that pushed forward the anaemic chorus. The EP’s other standout is Old Life, which displays more of a laid back groove and a sunset vibe over the rolling synths. It’s an impressive collection of retro sounding synth tracks and well written songs that hopefully should see Leitbur gaining a wider audience.

Hot Chip’s ‘Night And Day’ video

Here’s the new video for Hot Chip’s weirdly infectious forthcoming single ‘Night And Day’.

Once again it’s directed by Peter Serafinowicz , so I guess you’re pre-warned that it’s going to be surreal. And it is, but Terence Stamp, Lara Stone and Reggie Watts are along for the ride, like somehow that makes it slightly less surreal?

‘Night And Day’ is released 4th June on 12” and digital with reMixes from The 2 Bears (natch) and the B-Side, ‘Jelly Babies’.

Hot Chip’s new album, ‘In Our Heads’ is released 11th June.

Yeah/Dish!’s ‘Prom Night’ compilation

Parisian Disco label Yeah/Dish! has been releasing some really nice stuff, for free, over the past year. Many of these releases we’ve featured right here, now the crew are coming out with a full blown compilation. Released today ‘Prom Night’ is nine tracks of pure, Funk fuelled, synth nostalgia.

The tracklist reads like a who’s who of up and coming Nu-Disco artists with a couple of established names and some SynthWave thrown in for good measure. Featuring the likes of Luminaire, Cyclist, Stereocool and Hemmingway you know you;re in for a groove treat, full of laid back summer vibes and lazy Disco with a French flavour. There’s a collaboration between SoHight & Cosmonaut Grechko called, ‘Night Moves’ that’s ever bit as slick as you;’d imagine coming from these two. With a jump-out-your-seat beat and funk synth soloing that just sails through the track, ‘Night Moves’ is what retro synth and Nu-Disco should be all about. The king of SynthWave and Outrun Electro Mitch Murder contributes a sweet, emotional slice of his ‘80’s soundtrack inspired work, ‘Vanilla Sky’ is an atmospheric four minutes of synthesizer gold, with tons of soul. Moustache Machine’s second appearance on electronic rumors today comes from ‘Brenda’ and whiles less frantic that his other work, this more laid back peice is loaded with electronic nostalgia and a smooth groove. Also included is Stay Ali’s recent comeback track ‘Oh Tom’, a twisted and infectiously catchy little experimental peice that never forgets to create a melody that will worm it’s way into your brain. Yeah/Dish! have put together a pretty amazing collection of tracks, for free, and we salute them for it. Salute!

Touch Tone’s début single (pssst, it’s Short Circuit!)

‘Home Away From Home’ is the first single from Touch Tone, the new alter ego of Andrew Verner, better known to you lot as Binary staple Short Circuit. Whether this draws a line under his Short Circuit work and represents a new era for Mr. Verner or if this is just a side project we are yet to find out, we’ll have to bug him about it, but it does showcase a big new sound.

A couple of years ago we referred to Short Circuit as RoboPop, with ‘Home Away From Home’ Touch Tone shrugs off that vibe and comes storming back with a huge, emotionally resonant ElectroPop sound. Like Josh Legg’s recent more Goldroom work Touch Tone seems to be getting back to the core of what Dreamwave was supposed to be about, not necessarily musically, but in an atmospheric sense. ‘Home Away From Home’ captures that nostalgic optimism that the original Dreamwave releases professed. It’s an insanely catchy, anthemic, ElectroPop track with a cool Indie vibe and some nice ‘90’s House elements. The passionate vocals flowing effortlessly over the smooth LA vibe, this is a track that feels so comfortable with itself, and could be the one to break Verner to a wider audience. I’m sure a Goldroom reMix could be arranged, that would be sick.

Jules Schimmer reMixes alloapm

One of Manchester’s finest exports, Mr.  Jules Schimmer, has been working his retro synth magic once again, this time on Tokyo based DreamPop outfit alloapm. I almost called alloapm an ‘avant-garde DancePop outfit’, as they can get a little weird, but in a good way, and they never stop bringing the Disco, so we’ll just stick with ‘DancePop outfit’ for now and see how the post unfolds.

Anyway, Schimmer is riding high right now with a string of really top quality reMixes, and the on-going development of a bigger and bigger sound, bringing some hands-in-the-air to it’s ‘80’s core. Unfortunately most of the time it’s buried away on SoundCloud. Seriously, more people need to hear JS’ tracks, I think the word underrated really does apply here, the word on Schimmer needs to get out. Just take this new track, like I said, hands-in-the-air with an ‘80’s core. And over the bouncy retro bassline the epic stuff gets really epic. Beautifully orchestrated strings that weave in an out of a piercing lead line lift the track up to such heights and play around the highly effected vocals to produce a track with a huge scope. nostalgic and majestic at the same time. Jules Schimmer, like an ‘80’s movie, brings laughter, tears and eventual triumph in just under five mins of uplifting ElectroPop.

CHEW LiPS’ ‘Do You Chew?’ video

CHEW LiPS’s comeback tracks ‘Do You Chew?’ is such a welcome return. It’s catchy and infectious as hell too, it’s been on repeat a lot around these parts.

Check out the new video for the track. Filmed in Paris, the clip is it’s beautifully shot in dreamy soft focus for a nice retro look.

Leisure Council produces Taryn Manning

I’ve been sat on this track for so long, moths and months, that I was beginning to think it was never going to be released. Back when the Leisure Council (at the time still Firero) guys played me the track I didn’t really know who Taryn Manning was. Essentially, if someone has said “it’s Cherry from Sons Of Anarchy” I would have been right there, but I think as a recording artist (of quite good ElectroPop I have since discovered!) she’s not really that known outside America. Anyway, Nicky, Jeremy and Sam produced the hell out of her track ‘Moonwalk’, there’s even and awesome video, featuring Mr. Savage in fashion photographer mode and Sam channelling Guns & Roses’ Slash, that I’ve never been allowed to post. record label red-tape is really depressing sometimes.

‘Moonwalk’ is a seriously dreamy slice of what Fiero Leisure Council do best. Thick LA Funk and smooth Dreamwave combined. Talk Box laden grooves layer with huge, lush, synths and some of the sweetest sing-along vocals you’ll hear in a while. Taryn and Leisure Council seems like a match made in heaven. Not only are they a great musical match but both seem to embody a Californian party vibe that suits them and the track.  I hope this gets released some, and I hope the label make some wise choices with the reMixes.

S.P.O.C.K.’s best of the SubSpace years

OK, you either know what I’m talking about with S.P.O.C.K., or you don’t. S.P.O.C.K. are Sweden’s greatest Sci-Fi SynthPop export, with an awesome live show they are probably the most fun band in the galaxy.

They haven’t released a new studio album since 2001, but next month sees the release of a compilation of their output during their time of their own co-owned SubSpace Communications label, which actually includes most of their best years and the best of their huge space-age anthems, such as ‘Where Rockets Fly’.

‘Another Piece Of The Action: The Best Of The Subspace Years’ is released 5th June on limited edition transparent vinyl, CD digipak and digital.
