[MP3] Strangers cover Arctic Monkey’s ‘Why’d You Only Call Me When Your High?’

strangers_thumb

London’s finest SynthPoppers Strangers continue their quest to bring you a free track every month between now and X-mas. Having previously brought you Sense Of Liberty for July and No Longer Lost in August, and early entry for September delivers a cover of Arctic MonkeysWhy’d You Only Call Me When Your High?. Can you imagine it? Well, you don;t have to, ‘cos here it is.

This is how you make a song your own. We’re not overly familiar with the original, but we’re pretty sure it wasn’t built out of ominous bass synths and shuffling, clicking machine beats. The whole track here sounds like it’s layered with an air of danger, from the growling synths to the frantic Drum & Bass finale, the track breathes out a nervous tension that makes the song itself, expertly delivered by David, sound slightly menacing. Three months down.Three to go..

[Video] Chromeo & Oliver’s reMix of Donna Summer’s ‘Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger)’

Love Is In Control Finger On The Trigger Chromeo O... YouTube

A while back we served up the amazing team-up of Chromeo & Oliver reMixing Donna Summer’s Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger), taken from the forthcoming reMix tribute album, Love To Love You Donna. Now check out the official video for this astoundingly good slab of synth Funk.

The video riffs off the original, but adds a load of stock footage and colourful effects. A reMix of the original video for a reMix of the track, you might say.

Donna Summer’s Love To Love You Donna is released 22nd October via Verve.

[MP3] Free Johan Agebjörn/Sally Shapiro reMix album, ‘Sweetened’

johan-agebjorn

Never one to sit around on his arse, prolific ElectroPop producer Johan Agebjörn having already released the new Sally Shapiro album and it’s associated collection of reMixes, the man is keeping himself busy by releasing this free compilation of his reMix work, both as himself and as part of Sally Shapiro. Sweetened pulls together some pretty big names that Agebjörn has gifted with his production skills, featuring the likes of Little Boots, Jam & Spoon, Glass Candy, Lindstrøm, CFCF, Wolfram and Holy Ghost! and Hercules And Love Affair, and more.

It’s hard to pick favourites from this sweet collection, the releases here span a couple of years and showcase every side to Agebjörn’s production. From the blistering ElectroPop to the growling Italo, Johan always injects his music with an emotional energy, often mirroring the mood of the vocals, rising and falling with the sentiment of the track. Expect an album’s worth of punchy dance beats and starlight synthesizers that whirl around your head. At times the album show’s off Agebjörn deeper, groovier, more experimental side, but on the whole you’re treated to 13 tracks from one of the best ElectroPop producers in the world working today. Did we mention it was free?

Little Boots – Crescendo (Sally Shapiro Diminuendo reMix)

Wolfram (Feat. Hercules And Love Affair) – Fireworks (Johan Agebjörn reMix)

Lindstrøm – Grand Ideas (Johan Agebjörn reMix)

The latest single from SynthPop legends Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark is the slinky narrative of Night Café, quintessential OMD, the track tells a relatable story with a classic SynthPop backing.

The video continues OMD’s recent tradition of short animated movies accompanying their music, this one;s cute and gets a little crazy.

[Audio] Crayon reMixes Is Tropical’s ‘Lover’s Cave’

Is Tropical

This week saw the release of the new single from Kitsuné Music dance-rockers Is Tropical and sat amongst the reMixes is this shining star from one of our favourite producers, ex-Le Crayon, now just Crayon. The track, Lover’s Cave boasts a whole host of sweet reMixes from the likes of the amazing tesla Boy, Dombrace K-X-P and Jonjo Jury, but we think Crayon’s just takes the prize.

You’ll realise why this reMix is our pick of the release the second that warm, thick, 80s synth funk bassline kicks in. It’s pure Boogie, who’s Boogieness is only compounded by the rolling modulated synths and spaced-out delayed vocals snatches. It’s an utterly compelling track, revelling in nostalgia and vintage groove, but with both feet planted firmly in the present. Play out all this over a poppin’ B-Boy beat and Crayon has done it again. Frankly, this reMix is far too good for the mediocre original.

[Audio] Clancy and Kraver reMix Paulie’s ‘Want You’

Paulie

We’ve covered London Nu-Disco don Paulie’s Want You in the run up to the single’s release a fair bit, it’s easily one of the big tunes of the late summer. We’ve been eager for the full single release, with reMix package, and this week out wait was finally over. Released this week the track comes equipped with the excellent Monday Club reMix we posted last week and these two gems from our boy Clancy and Dutch producer Kraver.

Clancy’s take on the track is a suitably warm House jam.Rolling on a hook that worms it’s way into your brain played interchangeably by a hammered piano and a deep synth organ Clancy really captures a late night warehouse vibe with his mix. Sitting at the deep and soulful end of the House spectrum, this version mixes a little nostalgia with a little of the UK’s current clubland scene for a result which would rock almost any dancefloor int he early hours. Kraver gets far more retro with his reMix, a sumptuous banquet of electronic Soul and Boogie with punchy digital basslines and thick 80s synths all coming together with some smooth vocoding to take you back in time. the whole single is one of the finest dance released of the year, you should check it out.

[Audio] Keep Shelly In Athens’ ‘Flyaway’

Keep Shelly In Athens

The countdown is well and truly underway to the release of Keep Shelly In Athens’ long awaited début album. We’ve already had a taste of what to expect from the Cascine released record and each time we hear a new track out appetites are whetted even further. The duo have dropped a new tune, Flyway, and it;s our favourite of the tracks so far.

There’s something a little Röyksoppy about Flyway. Maybe its the smooth, laid back Funk, Maybe it’s the icy Scandinavian-esque synths, maybe it’s that we’re listening to it on a sunny day with the windows flung wide open (that’s a Röyksopp thing for us), but it’s got the infectious flow of Melody AM. An infectious dance beat and an inquisitive bassline (yup, we just described a bassline as ‘inquisitive’, deal with it) underpin the track with a rock solid groove, letting the reverb washed vocals and arpeggiated synths glide around the track, easing their way in and out of your conscious listening experience. Not that’s you’d notice, you’ll be too busy shuffling your feet. Album now please.

♫ Keep Shelly In Athens – Flyway

Keep Shelly In Athens’ début album is due out 17th September on Cascine.

[Audio] Skream’s ‘Rollercoaster’

skream

London producer Skream continues his decent (or ascent?) into Disco and House, much to the chagrin of his hardcore Dubstep fan-base, and much to the debasement of the Nu-Disco crowd. But here’s the thing…he’s actually really good at it. This is evidenced by his forthcoming new single, Rollercoaster, a collaboration with fellow Londoner Sam Frank.

Rollercoaster is such a luscious slice of LA Synth Funk that it’s hard not to love it. Chirpy little synth riffs, wicked licks and a thumping bassline, all wrapped up with a vintage sheen and Frank’s smooth vocals, what more could you ask for in a poolside tune? How about some twisted talkbox action? You got it. Even the waiting guitar solo seems to work when paired with some Zapp & Roger style synth work. Don;t worry about who’s producing it, just enjoy.

Skream’s Rollercoaster is released 27th October.
