[Audio] Shelby Grey’s ‘Electric Illusions’ EP

Shelby Grey

Released today, a fitting Friday 13th, is Spanish Nu-Disco and Dreamwave producer Shelby Grey’s new EP, Electric Illusions. Fitting as the new release sees Grey take a voyage into the worlds of 80’s synth Horror Soundtracks and moody Italo, all wrapped up in the man’s quirky Disco beats. Interesting stuff, and an anathema to the tidal waves of summery party Disco now the night are getting longer…and darker.

The release’s title track is a marching creepshow of synthetic basslines and spooky nightmare melodies, juxtaposed with a space-age Cosmic Disco groove. A Disco tune to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, Electric Illusions brings dread to the dancefloor. Possession continues the mood, but adds in some shuffling percussive breakbeats to the mix before the release plays out on Baroque Electrique. This final track is a pumping Italo/SynthWave soundtrack piece loaded with Disco flourishes. A rolling arpeggiated bassline drives the track ever onward with all manner of tense synth chords play out over the top, this one brings the strongest vibe to the EP whilst keeping up the mysterious theme running through. A good concept EP from Shelby, and a nice break from the norm.

[Audio] St. Lucia’s ‘Too Close’

st-lucia_thumb

New York based ElectroPopper St. Lucia’s long long long awaited début album is finally almost upon us. And, as is customary these days, this revelation comes with a title, a release date, and a brand new track taken for the forthcoming record. The title, When The Night. The release date, 8th October. The brand new track, Too Close. Check it out.

If Too Close is anything to go buy we’ll be in for a treat come October. A buoyant and uplifting slice of complex ElectroPop but a seriously massive middle-eight. While the vocals sections of the tune are the most epic of emotion SynthPop, all rolling arpeggios and Jean-Philip Grobler belting out heartfelt lyrics, the meat of the track comes in the form of it;s instrumental section. Borrowing slightly from synth based prog rock, it’s a cosmic wig out full of soaring solos, LFO powered sweeps, and juggernaut drum fills. Impressive stuff.

[Audio] autoKratz’s ‘Midnight Hearts’

autoKratz

There a new single from London Techno loving ElectroPop duo autoKratz! It’s been 16 months since their last record, and we always worry that they are going to disappear into Techno obscurity when they don;t release new tune, but fear not, this new single has enough ElectroPop at it;s heart, and amongst the machine beats, to keep us all happy.

The A-side, Midnight Hearts, works a prober Deep House groove and sweeping 80s SynthPop vocals. Strange bedfellows? Maybe, but autoKratz make it work perfectly, combing the best of nostalgia and London’s current club scene, with a dash of Tropical, for a serious floorfiller. That bassline alone is infectious as hell. The B-side, takes things even deeper. Mysterious synths and retro-futuristic beats couple with whispered vocals to deliver an early Detroit, by way of Gary Numan, vibe. An excellent return to form for these two.

[Audio] Figure Of 8 reMixes Hylo’s ‘Never Be Lonely’

Hylo

Dublin’s finest, Figure Of 8, is back with a brand new reMix! this time the bearded-one is turning his attention to fellow Irishmen Hylo and their Our Krypton Son featuring Never Be Lonely. Released as part of a mixed media art project called Dreamscape, for the time being the track will only be downloadable through scanning a QR code that is part of the accompanying artwork at the Culturetech Festival in Derry between 9/11 and 17/11, to be released on Figure Of 8’s DreamQuest label at a later date.

Musically, their reMixes DNA can be tracked right back through Techno to early EBM and electronic experimentalists such as Test Dept. and Cabaret Voltaire. Abrasive percussive synths and growling, hypnotic arpeggios serve as a nice counterpoint to the stomping dance beat and haunting, yet soulful, vocals. This is one for darken rooms with the strobe light on just a little too long. Intense stuff.

[MP3] Final DJs reMix Janet Jackson’s ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’

Janet Jackson

One of our favourite German exports, the awesome duo Final DJs, are on a bit of a reMix roll at the moment. having recently turned in a storming mix of Stevie Nick’s Stand Back, the guys now turn their attention to Janet Jackson’s 90s hit That’s The Way Love Goes. Unusually choice for a track, but the Nu-Disco twosome really run with it.

More House oriented that Final Djs usual output, this reMix keeps the original’s soulful swing and pairs it with a shuffling, Garagey beat and pulsating warehouse bassline. Staying true to the early 90s sounds of the Jackson single, Final DJs conjure a Pop-Dance vibe true to the era. sustained strings, a trope of the time, are utilised to great effect here, tempering the tough groove to allow Jackson’s vocals to flow over the track like water.
