[Audio] The Juan MacLean’s ‘A Simple Design’

The Juan MacLean

A Simple Design is the latest epic (and we mean epic, another nearly eight minute opus) from DFA’er The Juan MacLean. Once again this one comes from his forthcoming new album, In A Dream, which is set for release next month. Alongside all those sweet vintage synths you also get frequent collaborator and fellow DFA crew Nancy Whang putting in some vocal work. Check out A Simple Design Below.

A Simple Design is anything but. A complex, multi-layered Cosmic Disco symphony as Whang, now pretty much a full time partner of The Juan MacLean, gives a New York Disco style performance, part SynthPop diva, part Post-Punk songstress, as waves of analog synths pop and glide around her. Add some skippy hi-hats to the mix, for added swing, and you’ve got an exciting, yet, thoughtful track that bodes extremely well for what the album might hold.

[Audio] Holy Ghost!’s ‘Bridge & Tunnel’ reMixed by Prins Thomas

Holy Ghost!

Norwegian Cosmic Disco master Prins Thomas has given his legendary Diskomiks treatment to the new single from New York DiscoPop duo Holy Ghost!’s new single, Bridge & Tunnel. The track is taken from their storming album Dynamics and sees Tomas deliver two reMixes, a Diskomiks and a Diskodub, alongside work from Midnight Magic.

Clocking in at seven minutes, Prins’ take on on Holy Ghosts! ode to their hometown lays the Scandinavian Disco vibes thick. Layered with a playful bassline and washes of space-age synths, the track also nods to it;s subject matter with broad vintage Disco strings and horns. There’s a nice retro crescendo around the four minute mark, before the track dives into a typically Thomas synth freak out.

The latest release from New Your Indie Disco label DFA comes in the form of the new single from their jack-of-all-trades The Juan MacLean. Get Down (With My Love) features vocals from Nancy Whang and drops on digital and one-sided vinyl next week. Prepare for some musical madness.

Get Down (With My Love) is a brutally bouncy, ecclectic Disco House track with heavy Italo overtones. The big synth bassline itself lends the track it’s particular swing. Quirky leads and syncopated keys swim over a tumbling House beat conjuring an energetic, frantic feel. Nancy’s vocals are just perfect amongst the chaotic Boogie making the track even more compelling. More genius work from The Juan Maclean.

The Juan Maclean’s Get Down (With My Love) is released 17th February.

[Audio] David Bowie’s ‘Love Is Lost’ reMixed by LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy

david-bowie

Earlier this year David Bowie stunned and excited fans by releasing his first studio album in ten years. The Next Day dropped with no warning to immediate critical acclaim and Bowie fans worldwide going a little weak at the knees. Next month sees the release of The Next Day Extra, a three disc special edition of the album loaded with unreleased tracks and fresh reMixes. Included amongst the reMixes is this ten minute epic from DFA and LCD Soundsystem head honcho James Murphy.

Phased layers handclaps create the backing rhythm for this impressive musical journey. Very much a DFA track, yet still retaining a quintessential Bowie-ness, this reMix reminds us of how amazing Bowie songs can be when he is paired with something more electronic and experimental musically. Given it;s length, it;s no sunrise that that tune has room to breather, taking it’s time building it’s Cosmic, New York Disco, vibe. even taking time to side-line into Ashes To Ashes briefly.

Here’s the new video for DFA’s Shit Robot’s Reggie Watts featuring, We Got A Love. It comes from a recently released split single with fellow DFA’r The Juan MacLean and it’s a pumping Disco breeze.

The video follows just another normal day in the life of a man filled with stars. Pretty hum-drum really.
