Tommy’s Outer Space Adventure with Jordan F & MegaDrive

The new album from leading light of the third wave of SynthWave, Tommy, is due for release in September. Outer Space Adventurer bills itself as a ‘Soundtrack for a Science-Fiction story’  and it certainly lives up to that premise as Tommy pulls out all his synthesizer wizardry brings Jordan F  and MegaDrive along for the ride.

Bringing his best Vangelis game to the table with the album’s title track Outer Space Adventurer, Tommy crafts a cosmic oddessy, a sumptuous tide of futuristic, rich synths set against the backdrop of a pounding mid-paced Italo rhythm section. Really capturing something magical and wondrous, Tommy takes the listener on a remarkable audio voyage through distant galaxies. A track to spark the imagination. Already Jordan F and MegaDrive have stepped up to the plate to work their reMix goodness on the track. Jordan, unsurprisingly, totally nails it. Keeping the mood but enhancing it with an air of romanticism with his beautiful, shimmering, melodies. The otherworldly sense of awe remains, but touched with something more emotionally human. MegaDrive gives the track a driving kick in the ass. Drawing out the tracks Italo side, MegaDrive even adds a little Acid into the mix, letting those sparkling leads play out over a grittier Electro groove. When Tommy’s Outer Space Adventurer album drops, you can bet it’ll be some of the best SynthWave you’ve heard all year.

‘You know what would be amazing?’ I often think to myself, ‘a Mitch Murder track with vocals’. Well, the moment has finally arrived, and who has stepped up to the challenge but non other than Greek retro Pop songstress Kristine. The whole thing is just to awesome for words.

Feel The Air is Mitch Murder applying all his abundant musical skill to a big euphoric, retro tinged, dance tune. This is the Mitch Murder sunrise tune, the Mitch Murder’s big hands-in-the-air track. Betamaxx

Betamaxx

Betamaxx is a one-man project hailing from Pittsburgh. Producer Nick Morey explores his love of synths and retro sounds to it’s fullest. What you get in his music is an amazing mix of analog Disco, ‘80’s movie soundtracks and floor shaking Electro. There’s definitely some big sounds coming out of the US version of The Steel City (the real Steel City, of course, being home of The Human League, Heaven 17 and Cabaret Voltaire, Sheffield).

We’ve got two tracks here for you to sample. today. Fist up is Syntax Analysis, a track that kicks off with deep robot synths and a B-Boy beat tempered with soaring analog leads and the track soon descend into a full-on retro synth love-in.  Betamaxx’s production is top quality, which is a good job because his tracks are pretty intricately crafted and multi layered, in the hands of a less deft producer things could get muddy, but Betamaxx handles everything with ease, allowing each element of the music to breathe and letting the listener soak up the nostalgic synthesizer sounds. Pittsburgh Nights adds a little Electro Boogie into the mix with a frantic, punchy, synth bassline, and rapid-fire rhythms. As with Syntax Analysis, Betamaxx juxtaposes the manic with the beautiful, in the form of blissful, and funky, electronic melodies. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Betamaxx from now on.

Pilotpriest’s retro collection

Amazing Canadian producer of the finest SynthWave soundtracks around Pilotpriest has just released an album of some of his earlier works. The new release, titled Music From 1990-2000 A​.​D. collects twelve older tracks from the man. Older they may be, but that in no way diminishes their quality. Essentially, twelve new tracks from Pilotpriest, yay!

Sure, the production might be a little less sophisticated than his current output. Sure, there’s more of a Lo-Fi experimentalism within. But this just adds to the records charm and differentiates it from Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Whereas that latest album is a cosmic journey through emotion and sound, these twelve tracks feel a lot more urban, a lot more hip. Spread across the entire album is a quirky Electro cool that plays well into both Pilotpriest’s cinematic and more disco sides. Take the collection’s opener, Harmony Gold, it’s got a definite solid analog groove but there is something about the warping synths and toytown drums that give it a bedroom charm. This continues as the album covers a variety of sounds, from the Downtempo of Relieve, the Electro-Indie of Sangalula and Electro-Surf rock (?) of New Man to the Folktronica od Best Served Cold. The album does pick up it’s Disco feet in some places, notably the stabbing, majestic Italo of New Voroder and the robotic groove of Now Sport. And, of course there are times when Pilotpriest gets to flex his orchestration muscles, best seen in Intercessor. All-in-all it’s a very different album to Original Motion Picture Soundtrack one that sees (or saw) Pilotpriest experimenting more freely, maybe as he was heading toward the sound we now love him for.

80s Stallone’s ‘Smoke & Mirrors’

Excellent. Mid-week music from London SynthWave producer 80s Stallone, and it’s one of his best too. What more can you ask for than a bit of 80’s Stallone’s spacey nostalgia? Also, it’s 3m30s, perfect Pop song length.

And Smoke & Mirrors is pretty spacey, more spacey than we are used to from 80’s Stallone. Here things get washed in reverbs and delays to a greater extend that we’d expect from this prolific producer, but the result is definitely pleasing. 80’s Stallone draws up a really nice, laid back but slightly dreamlike atmosphere where warm synth tones undulate around the track. The Italo bassline gives the track some solid backing, and the beats is a lot higher tempo than you’d think, which nicely offsets the cosmic keys. 80’s Stallone keeps the enigmatic mood going amidst the upbeat rhythm with playful melodies and some Sci-Fi vocoding. Groovy, with the added bonus of being a nice slice of ‘80’s fantasy, we’re diggin’ it.

Lazerhawk’s at it again! The SynthWave original gangster has whipped up this amazing reMix of Spanish Electro producer Teenage Criminal’s new single Hero. Oh it’s big!

Lazerhawk has gone for the full-on epic Electro vibe on this track. It does everything in massive style. Big pounding drums, huge chainsaw synths and majestic soloing that gets mind blowing at points. The combination of the grinding dirty synths and shining leads take this tune to the next level. Coursing waves of piercing melodies set against post-apocalyptic noise. Powerful stuff.

Com Truise’s ‘Chemical Legs’

Every Monday this summer Adult Swim have been giving away free singles. The likes of Flying Lotus, Wye Oak and Wavves have all contributed tracks so far.This week’s free release caught our attention, coming from one of our favourite producers, New Jersey SynthWave master Com Truise.

Mr. Truise’s Adult Swim single is Chemical Legs, a glitchy slice of retro robo-Funk that feature, for the first time, the vocal stylings of Com himself, albeit heavily vocoded for most of it. There is a chorus of the man singing though, he does quite a good job too.. It’s a twisted slice of electronica, Com’s trademark abrasive basslines and lush Sci-Fi synths sounding more staggered and fast attack arpeggiated than ever. But this isn’t a frantic a track as it sounds, it’s got quite a smooth, admittedly dark future, vibe.

So, we’re definitely now allowed to call French ElectroPunkers WAT We Are Terrorists anymore, right? OK Then. That’s all in the past. Anyhoo, WAT have teamed up with fellow French electronic luminary Frederic De Carvalho to drop a brand new single on KIEZ BEATS next month.

KIEZ really are pushing to become the cornerstone of the SynthWave/Outrun scene these days (I think Rosso Corsa might have a thing or two to say about that?), even going so far as to release a record called Out Run. Have WAT & Frederic De Carvalho crafted the ultimate Outrun anthem? Almost. It;s a really good track, a driving Italo bassline runs throughout accompanied by stabbing synth chords. So, it’s called Out Run, it’s even got artwork by The Zonders! It ticks every SynthWave box, but we would say this falls more into the melodic end of the Electro-House arena than proper SynthWave/Outrun. Nonetheless, Out Run is an awesome track. A hypnotic, electronic, odyssey that conveys a uplifting sense of euphoria. It’s one to get lost in.

Lamet’s ‘Palermo’

We featured Russian Italo and House producer Lamet in our round-up of reMixes of Lifelike & Popular Computer’s Getting High, it was one of our top picks of versions of the track. Lamet has been quietly churning out massive tunes that, once again, prove Russia is killin’ it right now in terms of synth and dance music. His track have ranged from big room House to Disco. His latest offering Palermo is Italo gold.

Palermo brings a touch of Lamet’s House expertise to Italo with a nice layer of late ‘80’s House piano over the digital bass and retro synths. The lead line in Palermo is just that right kind of Italo haunting, the sort of melody that sticks with you all day. As will all good Italo, there’s a slightly otherworldly feel to the tune, but mostly it’s rooted in retro dancefloors, flashing ‘80’s disco lights and good times in the sun. This is proper Italo, done well.
