[Audio] Mjolnir & Dini

Mjolnir

Here’s the latest tune from our favourite Indonesian Disco dudes, Mjolnir. Recorded exclusively for OZ Radio Jakarta as their monthly theme song, Mjolnir roped in singer Dini to provide a vocal touch to their smooth Nu-Disco sounds.

Fashion Star is a lovely slice of modern Funk. From it’s infectious synth bassline to it’s lush 70s Disco strings, the track just pops. Intercut with thick retro stabs and Cosmic synth flourishes, Fashion Star builds itself around a warm electric piano hook and Dini’s catchy vocal with every part of the track coming together to form a laid back, feel good, vocal Disco tune that seems to put you in a good mood, whatever you’re doing. Mjolnir really need to get to work on a new EP, we’re gagging for more.

[MP3] Hey Champ return

HeyChamp2013

Chicago Indie-Electro trio Hey Champ make a triumphant return this week with a brand new single. It’s been a while for these guys, over a year since their last single and we are very glad to have them back. Always a sure bet for epic ElectroPop tunes and Nu-Disco reMixes, their new single, Cliché is no exception.

Catchy and bouncy, Cliché is the fist of a host of new material the guys have lined up for the coming months. Combining the best of ElectroPop with a Disco groove, Hey Champ deliver a classy, uplifting sound that has evolved over time but not lost any of their quintessential Hey Champ-ness, featuring the warm pads, the French-esque Disco vibe and the passionate vocals that’s always marks their work. A very welcome return.

[MP3] Flemming Dalum reMixes Giorgio Moroder

Giorgio Moroder

reMixes of Disco pioneer Giorgio Moroder’s From Here To Eternity (our second favourite Moroder track) seem to be coming this and fast. First MB Disco released a bunch of reMixes, including work from Aeroplane and ATTAR!, now Disko Selectors have dropped their second anniversary compilation and it features a version of the track by one of our favourite producers, Italo legend Flemming Dalum.

As to be expected, Flemming’s mix is a masterclass in solid Italo Disco. A futuristic electronic soundscape build on a foundation of BladeRunner arpeggios and Sci-Fi synths. With hints of Kraftwerk and Industrial percussion, Flemming creates an urban-dystopia mood of their ‘77 classic, juxtaposing the dark future groove with shining, optimistic leads. Robotic boogie at it’s best.

[MP3] Ali Jamieson’s ‘Four Thirty’ EP

ali jaimeson

So tracks just take their time. We first featured London producer Ali Jamieson’s Four Thirty  in it’s demo form back in 2011. Ali’s been pretty busy since then working begin the scenes for MofoHiFI and their sister label Heavy Disco and their amazing roster of artists, but it’s now his time to step into the limelight as Four Thirty finally gets a full release.

Four Thirty, as we mentioned last time it featured on these pages, is a wicked mixture of Synth Funk vibes and dirty Nu-Disco. A chugging bassline and some gritty synths give the track enough balls to earn the Heavy Disco title, but this is nicely off-set by some dreamy vintage synth stabs and twisting Funk melodies. reMixes on the single come from Holmes Price, Alizzz and these two gems from 5eya and Data/Debt. 5eya takes the track down smooth new roads with his laid back deep Disco mix. Dropping a hazy vocal sample into the ix adds a special touch to his reMix, sitting pretty amongst the waves of chilled sounds. The Robo Funk is turned up to eleven on Data/Debt version of the track. With a slight Italo flavour, Data/Debt unleashes some euphoric House hooks that roll atop a pounding futuristic groove. Awesome stuff. Did we mention that the whole single is free?

[Audio] Factory Floor’s ‘Fall Back’

Factory Floor

It’s been about a year since UK Indie-Electro/Post-Punk/Post-Industrial outfit Factory Floor’s last single. The first hit of their début album, slated for release in May, is finally here. Getting a little Minimal Synth groove on, Fall Back is released on DFA later this month.

Clocking in it just under nine minutes, Fall Back is a hypnotic Elektro Industrial excursion. Combining the sparse electronic assault of early Industrial, the listless vocals of Minimal Synth and the pounding of EBM, all wrapped up in Factory Floors’ effortless cool, Fall Back delivers an aural experience that could have easily come out of Sheffield in 1980. It’s an interesting hint of what to expect when Factory Floor’s album drops, and a track you can completely loose yourself in.

[Video] Goin’ Old School: Squash Gang and Latin Lover

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

Here’s we have some classic Italo in the form of Squash Gang’s 1986 hit I Want An Illusion.

And some cheesy, but funky, magic from Latin Lover’s 195 Italo tune, Casanova Action.

[MP3] Earl Grey reMixes Kido Yoji

Kido Yoji

Toady seems full of old track that are just seeing the light of day, and sound amazingly fresh despite their age. Check out this reMix from Danny Ashenden, better know as one half of The C90s, in his Earl Grey guise. It’s of Kido Yoji’s  Won’t You Come Again? that, for one reason or another, didn’t make the single. It’s two years old (Kido’s not even realising solo track any more), but it sounds as fresh as anything you’ll hear this year.

Maybe the future Funk was just too futuristic for Yoji’s label? Who knows? What we do know, though, is this tune lays on the laid back synth Fun, thick. The Tokyo producer’s beloved talkbox vocals fit like a glove with Earl Grey’s blissful beats. Like a sunset on a alien shore, this reMix nicely combines a chilled beach groove with a touch of Cosmic Disco. If you like your synth sound spacey, and your Disco relaxed, then this is the tune for you.

[Audio] Moon & Walker reMixed by Ride The Universe

moon & walker

Moon & Walker are a new Australian duo (or are they?), so new in fact that they haven;t got a web presence we can link to, so you’ll just have to take our word for it that they exist. Well, our word for it, and this storming reMix of their début single from Dreamwave superheroes Ride The Universe.

Love A Little More get’s a blissful, Funk fuelled, Nu-Disco workout from Dreamwave’s A-Team. Like sunshine pouring out of your speakers, which, in the middle of January, is awesome. it’s got everything we’ve come to expect, nay demand, from RtU. No-one rocks a smooth groove quite like these guys. Complex Disco basslines and buzzing retro synths breezily wash over the most laid back of beats as Ride The universe mix a little of their trademark talkbox into the track. With a pinch of stardust sprinkled on their beach party RtU bring their eternal summertime into our lives once again. This is music for hot girls to dance in slow motion too.

[MP3] Cassette Club X Ben Macklin X Yota

Ben Macklin & Yota

London Producer Ben Macklin is having a really prolific six months. Not only has his main outfit, Cassette Club come back in style, but this new solo release, featuring the vocals of Yota (Lifelike/Zoo Brazil/DLG), come hot on the heals of his Sometimes collaboration with Vern. His latest single, Controller, also comes with a reMix by the aforementioned Cassette Club, which he is generously giving away for free.

The Cassette Club reMix of Controller is a lush slice of urban Dreamwave. A warm, dreamy Disco track with a smokey, inner-city vibe, the track rolls along intertwining Yota’s ethereal vocal with vintage pads and razor sharp leads atop a sturdy dancefloor groove. As well as a slightly Italo Funk, this tune has a mysterious quality to it. One that captures all the promise of summer nights in the city with it’s infectious bassline and it;s beat that won’t sleep. One for the nightowls.

Controller is out soon and also features a reMix from Popular Computer.

[Audio] Stuart Price reMixes Pet Shop Boys

pet shop boys

When  you’re reMixing SynthPop legends Pet Shop Boys, do you try an bee all hip with whatever sounds are packing dancefloors at the time, or do you think “fuck it” and go all mid-80s reMix? It seems like producer extraordinaire Stuart Price wisely took the latter path and had dropped a track that could comfortable sit on the B-side of any number of 1985-1987 PSB 12”s, albeit with a little more contemporary studio slickness.

As well as drawing comparisons to Shep Pettibone’s classic, pumping, PSB reMixes, Stuart Price’s take on their new single, Memory Of The Future, surprisingly feels like it has a load of mid-80s Front 242 in it’s DNA. The fact that this Extended Mix sounds like extended mixes of our youth is giving us a nostalgic glow. With it’s vintage drum sounds, digital bass and icy pads, this Price mix obviously goes perfectly with Tennant’s vocal, this kind of track is what we’re most used to hearing him on. An excellent update to the classic PSB sound, this one is going to be on repeat for a while.
