[MP3] Shiny Toy Guns reMixed by Gosteffects

Shiny Toy Guns

OK, so this is full-on cheesy. Unintelligent, uninspired, lowest common denominator dance music. But there’s just something about it that’s pretty infectious. Sure it’s the same old arpeggiated mid-90s Trance leads and really obvious builds, but this reMix of Shiny Toy Guns’ excellent single Somewhere To Hide, from their album III, by New York producer Gosteffects won us over.

Gosteffects keeps a good level of excitement and works the vocals well to deliver a pretty epic dance track. It’s not the kind of thing that would usually be to our tastes (at least not since the early 00s) and is probably what uninformed Americans would call ‘EDM’, but we just can’t help but like it. Maybe it is the big builds, maybe it is the cheesy leads, maybe we’re just not a cynical as we used to be (yeah, right!), but this has us wishing we were dancing in a field with thousands of others. Switch off and enjoy.

[MP3] Avec Sans’ ‘Hold On’ reMix

avec-sans_thumb

London based ElectroPop bright stars Avec Sans current single Hold On is continuing to get a fair amount of play round these parts. Now the single is out, the duo are throwing their own reMix of the track into the freebie ring so if you haven’t picked up the release yet you can grab a taste of what you’re missing.

Avec Sans obviously had a lot of fun reworking their own track, outside of the confines of typical Pop song structure they’re free to play around with rhythms, sounds and samples in a way that has you imagining them cracking their knuckles before diving into their own pallet of sound. If you know the original track (which you should by now!), you can expect to hear it chopped up and stuck back together with sticky tape from the London club scene. A little experimental, but still keeping the groove going.

[MP3] Oliver reMixes Mayer Hawthorne

Mayer Hawthorne

The first single from LA Funk-Popster Mayer Hawthorne’s new album Where Does This Door Go? has been reMixes by fellow LA denizens, the Oliver themed Nu-Disco duo Oliver. The Jessie Ware featuring Her Favorite Song is out later this month and Oliver have tuned it into the perfect piece of late night Funk.

This one’s stuffed to splitting point with thick synth bass, smooth drums and silky leads. This almost feels like Dreamwave Oliver of old, and fits the vocals like a glove. About a 100% improvement over the original, where middle of the road rock meets Pop Funk, this mix is pure synth soul. Just let yourself be carried away on a sea of Moog Funk basslines and rich retro sounds. Jesse Wares vocal contributions, as brief as they are, really make the tune in some ways, we’d have liked to hear more of her in the song. A Ware and Oliver track would be awesome. Oliver’s mix of Her Favourite Song is a moonlight track if ever we heard one.

Sense Of Liberty is the first of the monthly gifts. Typically Strangers in it’s grandiose, bombastic take on SynthPop. It’s tracks like this that lead us to believe Strangers need to be playing stadiums as soon as possible, their music is just so epic, the kind of songs that would just be unbelievably euphonic to sing-a-long with a massive crowd to. Sense Of Liberty packs in buzzing apreggios, vintage beats, and a big, sweeping, string section that underpins David’s anthemic vocal. It;s unbelievable that these Strangers haven’t charted in the UK yet, but that’s only a matter of time, meanwhile they are more concerned with keeping you lot entertained with freebies. [MP3] Mereki’s ‘Blue Lake’

Mereki

We first featured LA songstress Mereki’s Blue Lake back in November last year, when it was still in it’s demo form. The voice of Miami Horror drummer Aaron Shanahan’s Good Night Keaton‘s Next To Mexico and Goldroom’s Only You Can Show Me, not to mention the voice of Goldroom live and Josh’s long-serving touring partner, looks set to be generating quite a bit of interest with her solo offerings.

We’re not going to repeat ourselves too much about the track, you can read our initial thoughts here, suffice to say Blue Lake is a majestic slice of sing-a-long summery ElectroPop that brings to mind the excitement of those first Ellie Goulding tracks, before she got bland. This final version of the track sounds a lot tighter, the drums are a bit beefed up and the synths a little more powerful. Also, the addition of a wailing guitar solo came as a bit of a surprise, not sure how needed it was really, but there it is. Mereki is definitely one you should be watching.

Mereki’s début EP is due out soon.

[MP3] Fear Of Tigers reMixes The Sound Of Arrows

The Sound Of Arrows

One from the vaults, as it were. This one must be at least a two years old, but for “some reason of other” (Stefan’s words) this reMix of The Sound Of ArrowsThere Is Still Hope by Mr. Fear Of Tigers never saw the light of day, until now. The track is taken from The Sound Of Arrows début album, Voyage, from 2011 and judging from Fear Of Tigers reMix style, we’d place it around then, if not earlier (if it was originally destined for a pre-album single). But we don’t care, you’ll know that The Sound Of Arrows and Fear Of Tigers are kinda’ like electronic rumors extended family, so one reMixing the other, no matter how old, hits us with a bolt of excitement lightning.

We love it! It makes us so nostalgic for those couple of years when these guys both released their prémier albums. If you’re looking for that kind of epic ElectroPop, defined by powerful beats, huge sweeping synths, uplifting melodies and just a hint of retro cool, that made the tail end of the last decade such an exciting time then look no further. Stefan’s impassioned vocals and Ben’s ability to inject an emotional rush into dance music are on display to their fullest here. Makes us miss all these guys, we hope they come back to release something soon.

[MP3] Emeron & Fox’s ‘Arms Out’

Emeron & Fox

The new one from Brooklyn based SynthWavers Emeron & Fox is something a bit different, by their standards at least. In tune with the increasing mood of lazy summer evenings (well, for me anyway) the duo present the timely release of Arms Out. More in keeping with their début single, the haunting Nightmares, than more recent, more upbeat, offerings, Arms Out sees these guys slip back into a dreamlike mode.

There’s would be a chance you could find Arms Out a little unsettling, with it’s ethereal vocals and ghostly electric piano, if it wasn’t for the warm old school Hip Hop beats and Disco bass. There’s something irresistibly funky about this track, you can’t help but nod your head and get into it. So when it’s siren song curls around your head like smoke and those strangely uplifting synth drones in the chorus kick in it makes for an unusual combination of groovy and enigmatic, but a combination that Emeron & Fox make work.

[MP3] MiGHty mOUse’s ‘Feel Alright’

Mighty Mouse

So, as you know, London’s Cosmic Disco guru MiGHty mOUse and Van She bassist Matt Van Schie have been busy releasing Moody DiscoPop tunes as Du Tonc and setting up their own label, Nightfilm Music. Well it seems Mr. mOUse is pretty pleased with his accomplishments as he’s put together a new MM tune in recognition of a stunningly successful few months. And here it is.

Feel Alright pretty much does what it says on the tin. It’s a sweet slice of sample based Disco, fit for sunshine and good friends. Floaty beats, head nodding bass, MiGHty mOUse’s trademark swirling galactic synths deliver a groove that is hard to resist. Top that with a fun times vocal sample and you got a party tune set for the summer. Seriously, if you can’t crack a smile to this one, you might just be dead inside.

[Audio] Little Boots’ ‘LBD Edit’ of ‘Motorway’

Little-Boots

Little Boots Discotheque is ElectroPop princess Little Boots’ new dancefloor oriented live experience. Basically it’s LB and crew doing the ‘hunched over Ableton thing’, so if you get the chance to catch LBD live expect to be dancing your ass off to live edits and reMixes of Boots’ material. They are headed to Glastonbury this weekend, then the world!

To get a taste of what to expect, Vicky is giving away the LBD Edit of her recent single Motorway. Taking the spacious, Kraftwerkian original, this Edit makes the room even bigger and mixes up Dub and House for a hypnotic, intoxicating (nearly) eight minutes. Interestingly most of the vocals are kept intact (expect live vocals from a LBD performance) and now roll over a ebbing tide of noir beats and enigmatic synths. Bring the strobe lights.

Little Boots’ second album, Nocturnes is out now.

[MP3] Rebeka’s ‘Melancholia’ reMixed

rebeka

This week sees the release of a sweet collection of reMixes of Polish quirky ElectroPop duo Rebeka’s Melancholia single. Their label, Brennnessel, has pulled together some of the top names on raw electronic Disco to deliver three hefty versions of the tune. Moullinex, Shindu and Brennnessel bosses Kamp! all weave their dancefloor magic with Iwona’s epic vocals.

Moullinex’s reMix is instantly recognisably his. An energetic, Cosmic Disco take on the song, that borrows a few tricks from Dub and gets quite dark at times. Put together on all analog equipment, Moullinex’s offering blends his rough ‘n’ ready Disco sound with Rebeka’s soaring ElectroPop to great effect. Belgium’s Shindu get enigmatic as they tackle the tune. Working around a deep synth bass and sparkling 80s leads, Shindu turn in a reMix that is a dancefloor intoxicant yet reminiscent of the best in 80s Pop. Once you get drawn into Shindu’s bass and keys, it’s hard to get out again as the track envelopes you in it’s warm layers of sound. Brennnessel’s own Kamp! take the energetic route with their version, opting for a French House influenced floorfiller. Big beats, big riffs and a piano hook to get lost in are the order of the day here. This is definitely one for the crate, indeed they all are. Check em out, did we mention that they are free?
