[Audio] Lightwaves’ ‘Returned’

It seems that not only is Lightwaves back, but he (now they) is back with a vengeance. It was only just before X-Mas that they released their first record, both in ages and as a band, Starting To Believe; which was swiftly followed by an awesome reMix from Fear Of Tigers. Now, with 2014 barley a couple of weeks old, Lightwaves releases Returned. Are you sitting down? ‘Cos the DC outfit have dropped another huge slab of SynthPop to knock you off of your feet.

By now Lightwaves modus-operandi is familiar. Heavyweight retro synth riffs, unobtrusive Indie guitar, powerfully driving rhythm section and those anthemic, passionate vocals; are all present and correct on Returned. With just a hint of a SynthWave-esque 80s slant the track shows off a clean, crisp Indie-Electro sound put in place with precision production and a razor sharp sound pallet. Whilst maybe not reaching the epic heights of last month’s Starting To Believe, Returned is an adequate compliment to that track; exploring Lightwaves’ live, rawer, side.

[Download] datA’s ‘Soldier’s Flag’

This week one of our favourite French producers of all time, the always excellent datA, releases his new single, Soldier’s Flag. It’s his first record in what seems like an age. So long in fact, that we didn’t even know if this guy was still going; but we are very pleased to report that not only is he still going, but his new record, whilst a slight change from his pervious work, is pretty infectious. The Soldier’s Flag single also comes equipped with reMixes from Bottin and Reflex.

Soldier’s Flag is a seeming strange combination of a smooth, soulful tune and a gritty Electro-House beast. But datA make it work, intertwining a hypnotic, dirty synth riff with a vintage sounding vocal hook. Riding the wave of Gesaffelstein-esque post-EBM Techno without ever falling into the genre trap. datA bring a little sweet musicality; an emotional quality to this grinding Electro resulting in something tough, but expressive and involving to dance to.An interesting direction for datA.

[Audio] A charity X-Mas EP from the Electronic Rumors gang!

Hey readers. A couple of weeks ago my father passed away, you may have seen a lull in posts. When all was done and dusted I felt the need to do something, both to commemorate my Dad and to give a little to an organization that helps both sufferers and carers, especially at a time like Christmas. So X-Mas Rumors was born. Four artists from the label kindly gave me their time and talent (and hopefully had a little fun) cover four beloved Christmas tunes.

Soundtrack your Christmas party, and do a little good in the process, with this new EP loaded with electronic cover versions of classic Christmas songs. Four of electronic rumors’ finest artists have generously devoted their time to covering their favourite Christmas songs for X-Mas Rumors, and EP whose entire earnings with be going to the Alzheimer’s Society.

electronic rumors newcomer (and Vulture Music veteran) Kids At Midnight work some kind of silky magic on Wham!’s Last Christmas, while the 60’s classic Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love gets an energetic retro ElectroPop re-envisioning by SynthWaver Let Em Riot. New York ElectroPoppers She’s The Queen deliver their upbeat take on Stevie Wonder’s classic What Christmas Means To Me and the EP plays out with electronic experimentalist beaumont intricate take on Little Drummer Boy.

The EP is being released with a ‘pay what you want’ price mark, with 100% of the revenue going to the Alzheimer’s Society we’re hoping people are full of Christmas cheer and give generously.

Amazing! Two new tracks from Swedish SynthWave master Mitch Murder in a week! First Mr. Murder spread a little X-Mas cheer with the smooth Don’t Let Me Spend Christmas Alone, and now here a brand new vocal track (we love it when Mitch Murder does vocal tracks). This time he’s hooked up with Australian singer Miranda Carey for some full on retro ElectroPop madness. It’s a free download too.

In total contest to Mitch’s R&B X-mas croon, Just ‘Till Midnight is what Mitch Murder does best. Pure, authentic, 80s music. In this case bouncy soul Pop. And it’s pretty stunning too. From the opening drum pattern, the track oozes retro cool, even before Carey’s awesomely fitting vocal kicks in the lush, stabbing synths are doing the job of reeling you in. This one’s got it all, catch old school Pop vocals, vintage synths chirping away, a hint of Italo in the digital bass and an end result that is big, catchy and the pinnacle of retro Pop.

[Download] Mild Peril’ ‘Themes’ EP

We’ve been waiting for this EP to drop for a little while now, a couple of weeks ago London Italomeister Mild Peril unleashed his interpretation of the Doctor Who theme tune to coincide with the shows 50th Anniversary with hints that a whole EP of TV themes was to come. Well, here it is, three tracks of synthesizer bliss with enough nostalgia to put a smile on your face.

There’s three tracks on the EP, we’re going to present two here and let you discover the third, Mild Peril’s rework of the A Game Of Thrones theme tune, for yourself. Of the other two one is a pure revelation. Would we ever in a million years think Aled Jones’ Walking In The Air from the Raymond Briggs cartoon The Snowman would make an amazing dark Italo song? That’ll be a no. But y’know what? It really does. Mild Peril gently lays down washes of electronic, atmospheric sound and building arpeggios until when that instantly recognisable refrain emerges all thoughts of Welsh chiorboys has gone from your mind and your just left with a pulsating synthetic soundscape and one of the richest riffs we’ve heard in a while and some beautiful playing. Who’s There?, obviously the Doctor Who theme, opens with some dialogue form the shows very first episode, and proceeds to have fun with the tune. Whipping the theme’s lead line into an Italo frenzy, Mild Peril layers twisting snyths against a shuffling beat and the cultural icon that is the track’s bassline really capturing mood the show’s 80s years. You should all definitely check out this EP, producing TV theme cover version without producing extra helping of cheese is quite a feat, but Mild Peril pulls it off with style.

[Audio] ActRazer’s ‘The Return’

ActRazer, previously known as Actraier, I’m sure you’ll know is the moody, high-octane, alter-ego of Mr. Michael, better known as Miami Nights 1984. This side of Glover has been quite for a while now, years in fact, but he surprised the SynthWave world this week with the aptly title The Retrun, announcing his comeback to the fold. A majestic announcement it is too.

The Return, is all about bombastic, emotional, musical moments wrapped in a SynthWave package. It ActRazer wanted to herald his restoration with the retro Electro equivalent of a fanfare he succeeded. Throughout it;s four and a half minute lifetime, The Return takes you on an expedition through various moods. From the deep, compelling synth bass and it’s ominous piano accompaniment, to the French Touch-esque chords, to the euphoric lead riff, ActRaizer still gives a nod to his 80s soundtrack music roots. Then, with about a minute and a half left, the shredding synth solo kicks off, and everything goes stratospheric.

[Download] Jordan F reMixes Olympic Ayers’ ‘Magic’

Olympic Ayres are an Australian duo who make some breezy Indie-Electro tunes. A while back they released the bouncy ElectroPop single Magic, which has now been given a massive work-over by SynthWave superhero Jordan F who turns the tune into a nostalgic, imposing, retro smash.

Returning slightly to his SynthWave roots, Jordan F delivers a pounding Italo groove, moody and ominous, which morphs the carefree vocals into some kind of hypnotic chant. The combination of the warbling vintage synth bass and shimmering arpeggios give the track it’s momentum, bringing the drama of the best 80s soundtracks to the dancefloor with anthemic vocals. Pounding hammerfall beats and relentless synths, awesome stuff.

[Audio] Mitch Murder’s ‘Don’t Let Me Spend Christmas Alone’

We do love synthy X-mas songs around these parts (as we’re sure you’ll become aware in the coming weeks). One of our first of the year comes from Swedish SynthWave mastermind Mitch Murder. Following on from his The Touch release on Mad Decent sub-label Jeffree’s earlier this year, Mitch has contributed to the Mad Decent/Jeffree’s X-mas compilation, A Very Decent Christmas. Check out Mitch teaming up with Santell for Don’t Let Me Spend Christmas Alone.

Mr. Murder goes 80s R&B for this X-mas ballad. A proper festive Pop song, Mitch calls to mind holidays of the past on MTV. It’s a departure for Mitch, there’s less of the vintage synth music that we are used to hearing from him, although there is a hint of retro synth roots, the song is a proper R&B serenade. Still, it’s loaded with Murder’s warn, vintage synth sounds though, and that rubber band bass and chimes that we love him for. More X-mas music to come!

[Audio] Com Truise reMixes Flight Facilities’ ‘Stand Still’

A couple of weeks ago we introduced you to the new single from Australian Indie-Disco aviators Flight Facilities. The Micky Green featuring Stand Still made quite a few waves online, but our attention was focused on the fact that at the same time a Com Truise reMix was announced. This kind of thing is exciting to us. Well, here it is, in all it’s enigmatic synth glory.

The Indie-Electro leading original is completely contrasted by this reMix. Com get’s his dark and moody SynthWave on here, which, weirdly (considering the original) works amazingly well with the vocals. The Truise take on the track is driven by a gruelling Synth bassline set amongst atmospheric and evocative layers of electronic sound. It’s the usual, amazing, Dark Future soundtrack vibes from Truise. And a track with proves a little injection of sweet female vocals into that equation does no harm whatsoever. This is one of those tunes that demands repeated listenings.

[Audio] Tesla Boy & Tyson’s ‘Broken Doll’ reMixed by Pioneerball

Unsurprisingly, the next single from Russian ElectroPoppers Tesla Boy’s amazing current album, The Universe Made Of Darkness, will is Broken Doll. This tune, featuring some vocal work from Tyson, is prime single material. Frequent Tesla Boy reMixers Pioneerball once again contribute to the single reMix package with this thick slice of Boogie.

This one is all about that heavy, heavy, synth Fun bassline. Popping and bubbling away in the background, the irresistible bass serves as a groovy core for Pioneerball’s arsenal of retro synth shimmers. Keeping things mid-paced and solid, Pioneerball serves up a rich vintage DiscoPop powerhouse that perfectly compliments Tesla Boy’s Anton’s vocals. The single also includes a Dub version by Tesla Boy themselves and a reMix of Invisible from Sportloto.
