[Audio] AlunaGeorge’s Bad Idea’

alunageorge

As London R&B ElectroPoppers AlunaGeorge race toward the release of their début album, Body Talk, we’re getting more and more eager for the record to drop, whist the weather is still good. In the meantime here’s Bad Idea, the B-side to the forthcoming re-release of the You Know You Like It single, to keep us going. Expect more future Soul and 90s flavoured introspective smoothness.

Bad Idea. It just sums up everything that makes AlunaGeorge such a special outfit. With a sound all of their own, like a dying robot, something spikey and electronic yet full of soul, they have taken the music world by storm in the past two years. George’s knack of mixing an experimental approach to electronic music with a keen knack for Pop arrangement and Aluna’s uniquely sweet voice and amusingly dark lyrics have not only made them stand out in a sea of music, but delivered something that is completely different from anything else out there. Bad Life is the proof, AlunaGeorge’s album is going to take 2013 by storm.

[Video] AlunaGeorge’s ‘You Know You Like It’ (take 2)

AlunaGeorge You Know You Like It YouTube

It’s a brand new video for AlunaGeorge’s You Know You Like It. Back in 2011 the You Know You Like It single sported AlunaGeorge’s first proper slick video. Now the single’s got a brand new clip to promote the duo’s forthcoming album Body Work.

The is probably the first basic Pop video the twosome have released, they’re are normally a bit more high-brow than this. This one right here is full-on 90s Pop swing.

[MP3] Fire Flowerz’s new mini-album

Fire Flowerz

Italian dirty Disco duo Fire Flowerz have just brightened up your week with the simple generous act of dropping a brand new mini-album, for absolutely free! These guys have been on our radar for a while now dealing out a bunch of top notch reMixes and collaborations with the likes of NAPT and Birdee, and now with the release of Beats Per Minute we get to revel in a solid chunk of original work.

Beats Per Minute, their first substantial release, contains seven tracks of scandalously grimy Disco and red-raw Funk. The release eases you in with My Fire, a slick Nu-Disco tune with a poolside vibe made all the more apparent with some enchanting talkbox work. Followed by the walking heavy bassline and sample Disco of Kisses In Technicolor Don’t let these sultry tunes fool you though, this release gets more intense as it progresses. L’Amour brings a little hypnotic Italo flavour to the album with it;s big ebb-and-flow synths and evolving Disco bassline. After an Interlude, Sheets reins in the weighty Funk with a laid back, almost R&B sound for lazy summer days. Don’t get too comfortable though, Impeto In G Minor delivers the release’s energetic high point, a brilliantly executed, if a little too short, example of cut-up Disco and big beats. Beats Per Minute’s final track, I Can’t Stay is a bit of an anomaly, with it’s mid-90s Dance take on Disco, but one that weirdly works really well. Maybe Big Beat,  Disco grooves, and wailing solos are the next big thing? All-in-all, Fire Flowerz have dropped a blinder of a début, and at this price you can’t say no.

[MP3] Aaron Alexis’ ‘Wild Nights’

Aaron Alexis

Here’s smothing a little smooth as we east ourselves toward the weekend. Out friend Aaron Alexis has served up this relaxing slice of R&B tinged Chillwave titled Wild Nights. Although it’s not really Wind Nights-esque, more like Slinky Nights, Aaron set’s us up for a chilled few days.

Wild Nights is a melting pot of Tropical hooks, Slo-Mo Disco grooves and R&B charm. Mix all that up with a laid back lounge feel and you’ve got the soundtrack to late nights in smokey backroom bars and moonlight swims. Deep woody basses and atmospheric pads rise and fall throughout the track, with haunting percussion and a determined clap beat. Aaron’s vocal croons out amidst a warm glow of reverb drenched sounds. Then gentle piano is just the icing on the cake.

[Audio] Patrick Baker’s ‘Slip Away’

patrick-baker_thumb

Another day, another post about Patrick Baker. Anytime this guy want to take a holiday is fine, he must be knackered. Having seen out the end of last year with his Televisor and Hot Hot Hawk collaborations, so far 2013 has seen a single and a new track from the man himself and his vocals leant to tracks from 5 Reasons and Silent Gloves and now he;s bringing it back with another new single, Slip Away.

Bringing it back to the ElectroPop after his excursion on New Jack Swing, Patrick once again show us why no-one does 80s American Pop music quite like him. With a Breakin’ beat and punchy synths this track announces itself from the first bar. Add a sprinkling of Pop guitar and Patricks epic Pop voice and you have another catchy slice of nostalgia from the man out of time. reMixes come from DigitalNativeDance and this opus from French SynthWaver Tommy. Tommy bring it energetic and upbeat, with phasing drums and a driving arpeggiated bassline, in case you felt like bringing it to the dancefloor. Top stuff!

[Audio] Ronika reMixed by The HICS

ronika_thumb

Whilst chatting about 90s R&B when we posted about Ronika’s forthcoming new single, Rough ‘N’ Soothe, we were this close to mentioning Mariah Carey. It seems we weren’t the only ones to  get this vibe either, as London based Electronic Soul outfit The HICS inject the track with more than enough smooth 90s swing to tip it over the edge straight into Carey ballad territory.

Of course, the key is the chorus and the chimes, both of which are kept intact in the mix, but layered over a booming, laid back, kick & shaker beat and lazy keys. Stirring up a musical daydream, The HICS have delivered that rare of things, a reMix that completely differs from the original (not just a different take on the same thing), but one that sounds just as relevant to the song. It’s not all pastiché either, these guys litter the track with interesting synthetic touches to keep things fresh. We’re looking forward to what else the EP, out in April, holds.

[MP3] Patrick Baker’s ‘This Love (Higher)’

Patrick Baker

Not one to sit and musically procrastinate, Retro Pop superstar Patrick Baker is slowly edging out of the 80s, into the early 90s with his latest work, This Love (Higher). The beshaded one injects a little Swingbeat into his sound, rolling up with a deeply groovy slice of Electronic Soul.

I was going to attempt to write this article without using the phrase ‘New Jack Swing’, but I can’t, so there. This Love (Higher)’s pretty damn New Jack Swing, well on the way there at least, like a smoothed out, slightly SynthWave version of New Jack Swing. I’m now going to say ‘swing’ another couple of times, just so you know. This Love (Higher)’s got the swing bassline that it couples with some really silky late 80s R&B drums and Baker’s husky vocals resulting in a tune that will just flow out of your speaker like water. I said I’d say ‘swing’ twice, right? That was the other time. Excellent tune.

[MP3] Kash reMixes Cassie

Cassie

Here’s an interesting little oddity that really grows on you.London based ElectroPop singer/songwriter Kash, who you may remember from Viceroy’s reMix of his track Long Way From Home, was basically mucking around with a track, injected the vocal from Cassie’s Me & U and came up with some serious deep warehouse brilliance. Sometimes happy accidents do happen, like that time we redesigned electronic rumors on a whim and it turned out alright.

It’s a hypnotic tune, and by hypnotic we don’t mean repetitive, more like entrancing. All low kicks and enigmatic keys, the reMix is perfectly formed to loose yourself in, in some dingy, dark club. Saying Cassie’s voice is pitched down doesn’t quite do them justice. A better explanation would be to say Kash has transformed her vocals in to some kind of House flavoured Gregorian chant, that weave in and out of his smokey backing track. If you get into this track, just be sure you can get out again.

Kash’s Playing The Fool single is out now.
