[MP3] Bestrack reMixes M.I.A.

M.I.A.

This is pretty epic. reMixes of M.I.A. tend to miss the mark a lot, but when they are done right they really work. This one works better than most. It’s the new one from French synth Disco producer Bestrack, who’s turned his attention to M.I.A.’s Bad Girls single of last year for this majestic unofficial reMix.

Bestrack goes big, and cinematic, with this take on the tune. Build on a core of shuffling beats and growling synth bass, the track heaps on layer after layer of resounding science fiction chords and pads. rising and rising throughout the song, flowing with M.I.A.’s vocals, the keys elevate the reMix to almost euphonic highs as frantic strings support the swelling. Never distracting from the compelling beat, this ceremonious take on a grimy song is certainly different. Give it a chance, you’ll love it.

[MP3] Strangers reMixed by No Ceremony

The forthcoming new single from London SynthPop trio Strangers, Something New, has been given a moody electronic workout by enigmatic Manchester based outfit No Ceremony. Something New is due for release later this month backed with another new track Never Enough on Strangers own label, Just Off Pop.

No Ceremony take thing deeper and darker with their haunting electronics. Like Minimal Synth, but with more groove, this reMix plays around with vintage drum machine sounds and space synths against brilliant chimes and running hi-hats. It’s like certain elements of the track were honed to pinpoint accuracy and weaved into a tapestry of Post-Punk, House and Experimental Electronics. A welcome addition to the single.

[Audio] Sferro’s new EP

sferrocover19

One of the many highlights of this musical week has been the release of the new EP from Girlfriend Records main man, Sferro. Not only has he released a beautiful five tracks of synth gold, but he’s also placed his fate in your hands with a pay-what-you-like price for the EP. I suppose, if you were a genuinely terrible person, that could mean you could pick it up for free, but we suggest slipping a few buck in the direction of someone pouring their digital heart out is the least you could do. No judgement. Or a lot of judgement. Whatever.

Wetware Computer is the name of the EP, which is all very William Gibson (there’s even a track called the tried and tested High Tech Low Life), a theme which carries over into the music. Four tacks (and a reMix) which deliver on the promise of soundtracking a dystopian, urban, dark future and a technological singularity. Autonomous Robot kicks off the EP, a steady and majestic introduction. An undulating synthetic chorus set to a machine beat that leads into the slightly more human Intelligent Systems. Intelligent Systems brings a little Boogie to this cold, cyborg collection, warming up proceedings with a laid back synth Funk bass and infectious hook. Wetware Computer follows, eschewing the dancefloor in favour of providing a haunting musical interlude. Sounding a little like 80s UK Sci-Fi TV themes (which is a compliment BTW) Wetware Computer layers, thick, rich and piercing sounds to create an intriguing, emotionally resonant, package of intertwining melodies. The aforementioned High tech Low Life comes next, and fittingly sounds a little like late 80s EBM, all steady pounding rhythms and buzzing synths. This is tempered with a hypnotic, shining melody that acts as a nice counterbalance. The EP rounds off with a reMix of Autonomous Robot by French SynthWaver Tommy, who turns in a galactic oddessy of a tune with some really interesting use of instrumentation and a full, encompassing, sound. We should make not of the fact that a few of the tracks on the EP are followed by reveres snippets of something or other. Honestly, we haven’t had the time to load them up in an audio editor and play them backward, but I’m sure they’ll turn out to be a ‘thing’. I guess we’ll have to wait an see, in the meantime go and check out this quality EP.

[MP3] Charli XCX & Marina And The Diamonds

Chalir XCX & Marina And The Diamonds

Inevitable collaboration of the century? Or the collaboration we always expected to happen, but never really thought, for whatever reason, would happen. But it has. Not content with being US tour buddies and generally hanging out and causing trouble, the two most interesting female ElectroPop artists in the UK Charli XCX and Marina And The Diamonds have only gone and done a track together!

Put together in celebration of their impending North American tour together, which kicks off today, the duet, Just Deserts, reeks of raw emotional power, and fun. These guys obviously had a good time recording the track, and amongst the pulsating synth bass and tribal drumming is a powerful song that plays perfectly to this duo’s take on girl power. It also plays to both of their vocal strengths, before listening we wondered how their two very distinct vocal styles would mesh, but their almost call-and-response direction allows their voices to weave in and out of each other. This track is mesmerizing.

Charli XCX’s True Romance and Marina And The Diamonds’ Electra Heart albums are both out now.

[Audio] Jules Schimmer reMixes My Midnight Heart

My Midnight Heart

Some nostalgic ElectroPop vibe right now from Manchester SynthWave producer Jules Schimmer and his reMix of Brooklyn newcomer, avant-pop singer My Midnight Heart’s Solace. Replacing the original’s left-field chorus with a smooth Dreamwave sound, Schimmer delivers a slick summery Pop tune.

On a bouncy, Italo flavoured, synth stomper, Schimmer wraps the  epic vocals in a swirl of warm synths that flow effortlessly with the song, rising throughout toward the tracks euphoric finale. Driven by a punchy synth bass, the track offers up both nostalgic synth vibes and a big, sunrise, feel. Entered as part of a My Midnight Heart reMix competition, if you like you can vote for it here.

[Audio] Viceroy & French Horn Rebellion reMixes

viceroy-french-horn-rebellion_thumb

A few weeks ago we introduced you to the new collaborative single from Viceroy and French Horn Rebellion, who have teamed up to deliver the awesome Friday Nights. You can read all about that here, but now the single is out it’s time to get your ears around the reMix package, the highlights of which come from the Disco name on everybody’s lips, Bronx, and big room producer Jessie Andrews.

First up is Bronx, who whips the tracks up into a warm, rounded House tune with a big Chicago hook. With both feet firmly planted in the warehouse, Bronx breaks out the 909 beats, organ basslines and piano riffs, which bring a new, enigmatic, edge to the tune. This one’s not so much about chilling with your peeps on Friday Night, as in the original, as dancing ‘til morning in some darkened venue. Jessie Andrews mix also heads straight to the dancefloor, but in this case it’s in the main room at peak time as growling synths and big Disco hooks mash together to create a driving tune with a big euphoric breakdown. The EP also comes equipped with work from Rush Midnight and is a sweet package.

[Audio] Soft Metals’ ‘Tell Me’

Soft Metals

Tell Me is our first hint of LA SynthPop/Minimal Synth duo Soft Metals’ long awaited sophomore album. The new full length LP, titled Lenses, follows the bands acclaimed 2011 self titled record and is set to drop in June. Tell Me gives us just a little taste of what to expect from Lenses.

It’s a track that is severely whetting out appetites. Hypnotic bests, robotic apreggios, metallic chords, all tempered with Patricia’s gentle, haunting vocal. Delivering an almost classic Italo groove, with just a hint of the kind of cosmic vibe you’d expect from Sci-Fi Italo, the ice cold electronics work together to produce something that is far warmer than the sum of it’s parts suggest, far funkier too. By the time the big vintage keys kick-in you can;t help but be drawn back into Soft Metals world. It’s a welcome return that has us eagerly awaiting the album.

[Video] Silverstar’s ‘Music Is Magic’

Silverstar Music Is Magic Official Video YouTube

Music Is Magic is the first single from Australian duo Silverstar. It’s a hell of a confident début, and a blisteringly good slice of summery DiscoPop. This is all feel-good with a beat and twisting synth riff that will have a smile on your face all day..

The video, directed by Tim White, is all kids playing and stuff with, to be honest, we’re a bit indifferent to regardless of Morocco backdrop. But it’s really nicely shot, and works well with the hazy vibe of the track.

[Audio] Alison Valentine’s ‘Circles And Triangles’

Alison Valentine

Out this week is the new compilation from Kitsuné Music, Kitsuné America 2. Amongst the many great tunes held within is this gem, the new track from New York Indie-ElectroPop princess Alison Valentine, Circles And Triangles. So settle back and prepare to be enveloped by Valentines musical dream.

As it;s title suggests, Circles And Triangles is a daydreamy, doodley piece of music. A swirling audio painting with an almost Chillwave atmosphere underpinned by some solid Funk bass and drums. Alison delivers her hazy vocal with the kinds of intriguing quirk that we haven’t really heard since the first Marina And The Diamonds records. Managing to somehow be both and smokey  and insanely catchy Circles And Triangles is utterly intoxicating.
