Happy Hunting

Happy Hunting

The mysterious and enigmatic Happy Hunting recently released their début EP, ‘Pitchblack, containing four tracks of interesting and involving art Pop.

This London based Duo manage to walk the thin line (if there is a thin line there?) between haunting and catchy. Although not quite Shoegaze-esque wall-of-sound, Happy Haunting’s eclectic and experimental strain of Indie-Electro is, at times, more soundscape than song, but a sweet and soulful vocal always seems to keep the tracks in line. The end result is a collection of songs that are both indicate, complex music labyrinths and infections Pop tunes. ‘Pitchblack’ is a pretty impressive début.

Chad Valley reMixed by Foals

chad valley

Chad Valley is throwing a couple of parties in London before the end of the year with his Blessing Force colleagues, expect Chillwave, Wonky Pop, eclectic Indie-Electro and a bunch of people not caring much what people think of them. Details here.

As a warm up to the shows, check out this reMix of Chad Valley’s ‘Fast Challenges’, from his ‘Equatorial Ultravox’ EP, by Foals’ Edwin Congreave. Keeping some of the Chillwave vibe Congreave twists the reverb heavy sounds into some kind of weird Experimental Deep House monster

Moscow Youth Cult’s ‘Iris’ EP

Moscow Youth Cult

We’ve been following Nottingham based raw ElectroPop outfit Moscow Youth Cult for a while now and their new EP ‘Iris’ gives as a tantalising view of what to expect from their début album.

The title track (first seen accompanying it’s video) is a strange, but beautiful, head-on collision between gritty Indie-Pop and chainsaw Minimal Synth, with a dancefloor beat. As catchy as it is abrasive this is garage ElectroPop at it’s finest. The rest of the EP takes MYC down a more experimental, atmospheric road, having got the catchy Pop tune out of the way the guys are free to explore their electronic soundscapes which ranges from the eerie, to the frantic, to the majestic. Two reMixes of ‘Iris’ are also packed in the EP including the Sci-Fi Pop-Funk of the ‘LA2019’ reMix (which, surprisingly, doesn’t sounds like Vangelis).

Munk’s new video

Here we have the new clip for Munk’s ‘So Close’, featuring Lou Hayter (who’s someone in New Young Pony Club who’s not Tahita).

The track is pretty chilled, but pretty infectious.

‘So Close’ comes from Munk’s ‘the Bird And The Beat’ album, out now on Gomma.

Penguin Prison’s ‘Don’t Fuck With My Money’ video

Here’s the video for Penguin Prison awesome current single ‘Don’t Fuck With My Money’.

As you can tell it was filmed amongst Occupy Wall Street, not too sure whether this falls under show of solidarity or cheap cash-in, make me a little uncomfortable. Still, you can’t knock the song, the song is amazing.

‘Don’t Fuck With My Money’ is out now.

Tubetops

tubetops

Brooklyn based four peice  Tubetops are funky, catchy, nerdy, DIY and quite handy with a synth.

They’re gearing up to release their début EP in December, seven tracks of varied and eclectic Indie-Electro that flows from jangly Indie to Trip-Hop to LA Funk. The self-titled EP is a hard record to pin down, some of the tracks are so stylistically different from one another, yet Tubetops have a certain warmth, and a certain sound, that seems to tie it all together. Despite the different moods the is a a strong vein of Funk shooting through the collection, tracks like ‘Aquamarine’ and ‘Here With You’ are approaching that particular LA Nu-Funk inspired brand of Dreamwave, whilst elsewhere their New York Indie roots shine though in summery IndiePop stormers.

Curxes

Curxes

Brighton based duo Curxes are bringing a little ‘Construction Time Again’ Depeche Mode back to SynthPop.

This twosome’s music may, at first glance, seem to be lurking with the dark Pop side of things, the  occasional wall of sound and melancholy give you that impression, but on further listening there is actually more uplifting about their sound than not. Roberta’s powerful post-punk vocals are easily strong enough to carry songs soaring, not that the songs need to be carried, musically a combination of Depeche Mode’s early industrial experimentations, Japan’s enveloping bass, and just occasionally, Pet Shop Boys early flirtations with Disco. With both a dark grin and the purest of Pop sensibilities, Curxes’ songs are immediately involving, drawing you in on the first listen and offering more with repeated plays.

Curxes are hitting Club Fandango @ The Bull & Gate, Kentish Town, London on 30th Nov. Definitely worth is if you’re in the area.

Orangewood

Orangewood

What happens when LexiconDon crooner Alex Koons teams up with producer Brandon Light and gets drunk? Orangewood, that’s what. A new dimension of groove.

Orangewood’s EP is available on Bandcamp, and it’s an eclectic affair. there’s a lot going on within the four tracks, a lot of influences and a lot of experimentation, but the duo never let’s things get out of hand. They’re going with the flow, but keeping it funky. The opening track, ‘Dick Daniel’ is like a Shoegaze guitarist jamming out over a Disco influenced ‘80’s TV Theme and provides a nice set up for the rest of the EP as you start to get a handle on what to expect. Following on from that the EP starts to bring in strands from everything from Cosmic Disco to R&B to Dancehall to Dub. ‘Too Long For A Good (A Childhood Medley)’ stands out as the ‘hit’, the only track with vocals all the way though, but don’t be expecting a LexiconDon-a-like, ‘Too Long’ is a strange combination of the Tropical and New York Indie, and even a little very early Smashing Pumpkins run through all the fun the studio can offer. There’s pretty much something for everyone on the EP, and at the amazing low price of free, you can’t really not dip your toe into the world of Orangewood.

Freak You reMixes Young Empires

youngempires

Stand by, there’ll be a lot of  reMixes of Young Empires’ new single ‘Enter Through The Sun’ incoming, I know of at least two more that will see the light in the coming weeks.

I’m not especially keen on the original, but all the reMixes I’ve heard so far are top quality. First up we have Freak You, who gives the Indie track as raw ElectroPop feel. There’s a slight chaos going on in Freak You’s reMix that gives the track an underlying nervous energy that drives it along. With some nice builds and an emotionally involving sound this version is a good start to the reMix flood.
