Errors reMix letthemusicplay

letthemusicplay

It’s always with some degree of trepidation that I approach email that mention Errors. When they are good, they are very good. Lush, moody ElectroPop that channels the best of Sheffield and Manchester in the ‘80’s, when they aren’t so good, it’s Indie dirge and contrived lyrics. Thankfully they normally fall into the latter category, but every new song is still a gamble. So let me put your mind at rest, their reMix of letthemusicplay’s forthcoming single is good. Relax.

‘All I Can Give You’ marks mysterious producer duo letthemusicplay’s third release and features the vocal stylings of Cardiff’s Until The Ribbon Breaks. Combined with Errors’ smokey Northern synth sounds it makes a track that revels in it’s melancholy, without going to far over to the dark side. Like the best Italo, Errors reMix darkness is shot thorough with a bolt of optimism, mostly played out through the driving arpeggios and work to counter the minor tones. Errors reMix of letthemusicplay instantly hits you with the best of early Yorkshire SynthPop, late ‘80’s Italo, Factory Records back catalogue and the tiniest touch of Disco in there for the dancefloors. Quite a feat, quite a reMix.

tEPr reMixes Woodkid

Woodkid

This week saw the release of the new single from last years king of blog-hype, Woodkid, ‘Run Boy Run’. It’s a typically introspective slice of avant-Pop, the kind we have gotten used to from Woodkid in the past year, the man has a skill for crafting really thoughtful tracks, both musically and lyrically. Remember how huge ‘Iron’ was last year. While the internet is bound to get all excited about the fact that there is a SebastiAn reMix on the single, to be honest it’s kinda’ mediocre. The easy highlight of the bunch comes from one of our favourite producers, and one third of one of our favourite bands, Yelle, tEPr.

It’s not the first time tEPr and Woodkid have crossed paths. Woodkid, A.K.A. Yoann Lemoine, directed Yelle’s ‘Ce Jeu’ video in his other guise as video creator, so maybe this is him returning the favour. tEPr’s reMix of the track is a deep throbbing slice of Electro-esque House. Highlighting Woodkid’s intimate vocal style and ‘Run Boy Run’’s primal percussion, tEPr applies then to a rock solid robotic beat and some nice Chicago stabs creating an interesting contrast of machine music and Woodkid’s incredibly human song. Not quite as Disco as we’re used to from tEPr, but he’s got this House thing down. It’ll be interesting to see whether this style was adopted just for the rEMix of if we’ll see tEPr heading down this path in future.

Goin’ Old School: Kraftwerk, New Order & DEVO

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

We’re breaking the ‘Goin’ Old School’ rules a little today by featuring tracks we’ve featured before and tracks that aren’t strictly ‘80’s, but in celebration if the late, great, Bob Moog’s birthday, here’s some of our favourite Moog tracks. Starting with Kraftwerk’s ‘Autobahn’ from 1975.

And we had to feature New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ again, from 1983. Moog Source anyone?

DEVO 1980 hit ’ Whip It’ is covered in MiniMoogs!

Autostrada (pssst, it’s Mille!)

Autostrada

Sweden’s  Autostrada maybe be a little more guitary than we would normally post, but their début track, ‘You & I’ is just so good it’s hard to ignore. It’s loaded with massive ‘80’s synth chords and big tom rolls, and we have a sneaking suspicion where that comes from. One of this IndiePop combo’s four members is SynthWave genius Mille.

Mille influence is all over this track, it’s pure retro Pop dressed up for contemporary summery Indie fans. At it’s core it’s perfect retro Electro. No one does big rousing synth music quite like Mille, he’s got a knack for uplifting chords and soaring lead lines and that knack lifts this track up above it’s peers. Atop this gorgeous synth work is some classic ‘80’s guitar and the kind of catchy vocal that buzz bands dream of. This track could be a big hit this summer, it’s good to know Mille isn’t letting his talents go to waste.

Touch Tone’s début single (pssst, it’s Short Circuit!)

touch tone

‘Home Away From Home’ is the first single from Touch Tone, the new alter ego of Andrew Verner, better known to you lot as Binary staple Short Circuit. Whether this draws a line under his Short Circuit work and represents a new era for Mr. Verner or if this is just a side project we are yet to find out, we’ll have to bug him about it, but it does showcase a big new sound.

A couple of years ago we referred to Short Circuit as RoboPop, with ‘Home Away From Home’ Touch Tone shrugs off that vibe and comes storming back with a huge, emotionally resonant ElectroPop sound. Like Josh Legg’s recent more Goldroom work Touch Tone seems to be getting back to the core of what Dreamwave was supposed to be about, not necessarily musically, but in an atmospheric sense. ‘Home Away From Home’ captures that nostalgic optimism that the original Dreamwave releases professed. It’s an insanely catchy, anthemic, ElectroPop track with a cool Indie vibe and some nice ‘90’s House elements. The passionate vocals flowing effortlessly over the smooth LA vibe, this is a track that feels so comfortable with itself, and could be the one to break Verner to a wider audience. I’m sure a Goldroom reMix could be arranged, that would be sick.

Dizkopolis reMixes Pastel Lite

pastel lite

Our favourite Malaysian Disco Dudes, Dizkopolis, are getting their big room sound back-on for this new reMix for fellow Kuala Lumpur based ElectroPop duo Pastel Lite’s ‘Assassin’. It’s only been a couple of month since we last heard from Dizkopolis, but it always leaves us eager for more.

The duo’s take on ‘Assassin’ brings their big retro synths and Nu-Disco grooves to the track. The original is a catchy, slightly musically abrasive noisy ElectroPop track and Dizkopolis smooth it out a little. Keeping Eff Hakim’s sultry, jazzy vocal intact and applying it to liberal helpings of lush, nostalgic synth work and digital slap bass. Dizkopolis have a knack for melding the sweet vintage sounds of SynthWave with the more broken dancefloor vibe of cut-up Nu-Disco and with the reMix they marry the two perfectly with a really emotive voice.

Van She reMixed by Hervé

vanshe

Van She’s ‘Idea Of Happiness’ was finally released this week and alongside the awesome original and the kicking SebastiAn reMixes we’ve already heard sits this Rave monster from Hervé. A surprising standout on the single, the reMix is bally, Acidic, in-you-face and bass bass bass heavy.

‘Idea Of Happiness’ looks set to become the anthem of the summer, an amazing comeback for Van She, and between the Indie-ElectroPop of the  original, the French Disco of SebastiAn’s mix and now Hervé’s big Bass track there is a reMix for every occasion. Hervé has dropped a tune that will be dominating festivals and big parties in the coming months. Keeping most of the track intact for the into, he then goes Rave crazy once the track kicks in with Acidic riffs and booming basses in a track that seems to constantly build.

♫ Van She – Idea Of Happiness (Hervé Room 1 reMix)

The single is out now and features additional reMixes from SebastiAn, Jonti, Hervé, and What So Not. Van She’s new album will be out this 6th July on Modular Recordings.

Aimes’ new single

Aimes

Yesterday Brooklyn based Indie-SynthWave artist Aimes released his new single ‘Step Away’. A slick Indie-Disco affair with reMix duties from  Chordashian.

‘Step Away’ is a nice mix of Indie and Disco with Aimes’ Chillwave leaning dreamy sheen. Funking slap bass and slick Disco licks play about amongst the lush retro synths with a restudy that it;s hard not to move to. Over the top of this is some surprising Bryan Ferry-esque vocals, sung with weird emphasis but perfectly fitting for the groove of the track. It’s one for lazy days in the city, in the sun. Chordashian’s reMix picks up the pace a little and aims the song squarely at late night dancefloors with a candy coating of the smoothest Disco, thick with cosmic sounds and vocoders a-plenty. The single is like the day and night of cool, this’ll be on repeat for a long time.
