[Audio] Holy Ghost! reMixes RAC, MNDR & Kele’s ‘Let Go’

In all honesty we just weren’t that keen on RAC’s, MNDR and Kele featuring, Let Go, in fact much of their output ever since they transformed from reMixers extraordinaire to major label Indie-Pop outfit has fallen a bit flat in our opinion, it;s not bad, it’s just not particularly inspired. Being big fans of MNDR, we really wanted to love Let Go, we just weren’t feeling it. However, we very much are feeling this reMix of the tune from New Your Indie-ElectroPop heroes Holy Ghost!, so there’s always that. I wonder if RAC know that the RAC is actually a thing in the UK, like the AA.

So, Holy Ghost! do what Holy Ghost! do best, injecting the track with a ton of their raw synth Disco. Twisting analog lead lines and thick, bouncing bass permeate every second of the track. MNDR’s vocals in particular fit beautifully with Holy Ghosts! NYC groove, moreso than in the original, we’d absolutely love to hear more of a Holy Ghost!/MNDR collaboration. The result here is a smooth and breezy, but definitely urban, slice of synthesizer funk, heave and robust, that’s as playful as it is pumping.

[Download] Freak You reMixes Natural Animal’s ‘Who You Are’

Freak You is so classy. Seriously, every one of his reMixes in the past couple of years has avoided bandwagons, avoided fads, avoided genres even. He just delivers, classic sounding, somewhat timeless, dance music tunes that always hit the right note with the track being reMixed. His latest work is a mix for Toronto based duo Natural Animal and their song, Who You Are.

Freak You takes the almost Tropical sounding Bedroom Pop track and morphs it into a brooding epic. Flipping Who You Are’s Island hook into a hypnotic refrain gives the track an anchor and frees up the rich strings and reverb washed vocals to freely ebb & flow in and out of the track creating an enigmatic, but emotionally resonant mood. Freak You works his sound pallet to it’s fullest, teasing every ounce of humanity out of the track yet keeping both feet planted firmly on the dancefloor.

[Download] Joel Hood’s ‘Follow the Fool’

Joel Hood is a musician from the north of England whose lush Chillwavey ElectroPop has just been snatched up by Sunday Best, who will be releasing his début EP next year. In the meantime Joel has just finished, and released online, a new tune titled Follow The Fool to give you a taster of what to expect from the EP.

Follow The Fool is surprisingly laid back and Tropical for something originating in The North. It’s also peculiarly British, compared to his contemporaries, in a way that we just can’t put out finger on but we love all the same. The track builds a swirling cloud of sound, from the running bassline to haunting snatches of Sax, the track is a multi-layered synthesizer dream that floats over a 90s beat. Add a pinch of hazy vocals and you have five minutes of downtempo, electronic brilliance. just what we needed this week.

[Download] Box Of Wolves’ ‘Close’

Close is the new tune of Canadian Chilly-Disco-meister Box Of Wolves. Taken from a compilation released this week, it perfect mid-week music. Funky enough to get you thinking toward the weekend, but chilled enough not to mess with your shit this Thursday. Check it out.

Close is just under four minutes of pure electronic bliss. With a healthy nod to both 80s SynthPop and early 90s classic dance music, it’s a tune that you can just relax into and let it carry you away. The play between the chord progression and the purcussion sounds particularly SynthPop which, when coupled with the Orbital-esque bass vibe and the waves of hazy vocals make for a spot-on slice of synthesizer escapism.

[Download] DNKL’s ‘Hunt’

This one has been languishing at the bottom of out inbox this week sometimes that happens when your being inundated minute by minute, but we’re very glad it didn’t pass up by completely. It’s the début track from an enigmatic Sweedish trio called DNKL. We guess, in the tradition of removing vowels from your band name, that DNKL could be pronounced ‘Dankel’, ‘Dinkel’ or ‘Donkel’. We’re going to go with ‘Dinkel’, ‘cos it makes us chuckle.

The track is called Hunt, and it’s a glorious slice of post-Chillwave ElectroPop with some of the most intoxicating, warping synth bass you’ll hear this side of a mid-80s movie soundtrack. The wonderful bass aside, Hunt is a brooding and deeply emotional four minutes of cinematic SynthPop. Haunting and atmospheric, Hunt never crosses the line into dark, melancholic maybe, but embodying a kind of optimism, it’s waves of hazy chords and razor sharp leads conjuring the beautiful rather than the ominous. It’s all very Sweedish, that mixture of icy Scandinavian synths and intimate, human vocals, and we love it. And that bass truly is mesmerising.

[Download] Miami Horror’s ‘Real Slow’ reMixed by Plastic Plates

We featured the new, comeback, single from Aussie ElectroPoppers Miami Horror last month. Real Slow features some tight vocals from Superhumanoids’ Sarah Chernoff and is a sweet slice of chilled DiscoPop. To make things even better, the tune has been versioned by one of our favourite producers, Mr. Felix Bloxsom A.K.A. Plastic Plates. The LA based Australian producer really gets his synthetic groove on with this one.

plastic Plates truly delivers the thick electronic vibes right here. A growling and squelchy synth funk bassline pulses away underneath waves of popping melodies and vintage stabs. A new rhythm give the tune a bit more of a jump-out-of-your-seat feel, and a pretty irresistible one too. Rolling along on a steady hook, it;s the choruses when this reMix really shines, loaded with big synths hammering away, complimenting Chernoff’s vocals to carefree effect. Another big tune from Plastic Plates.

[Audio] Scarlet Soho release ‘Hit The Floor’ retrospective

In the past year we’ve given a fair bit of attention to the selection of new singles from British ElectroPop outfit Scarlet Soho, but if you at all a follower of SynthPop in the UK then you’ll know the Southampton based outfit have had had a long and prolific career spanning over a decade. Now, with the latest era of Scarlet Soho earning critical acclaim, the band are releasing a retrospective, Hit The Floor: Favorites And Rarities, of some of their finest moments from their first two albums, 2004’s Divisions Of Decency and 2009’s Warpaint, and a host of never-before-heard material. The album is being released as a strictly limited edition CD the comes equipped with a packed 16 page booklet that serves as a visual history of Scarlet Soho. It;s released at the end of the month, but you can pre-order here.

Scarlet Soho’s sound has evolved significantly over the years, and that’s perfectly reflected on Hit The Floor. From the post-ElectroClash Indie-Electro of Divisions Of Decency to the more guitar oriented Electro Rock of Warpaint, Scarlet Soho’s experimentalism with different styles and strict adherence to decent songwriting above all else had always delivered an interesting listening experience regardless if they are currently playing a sound you dig or not. There’s something for everyone on this compilation, whether it’s the raw electronics of Disconnected and Modern Radio or the polished Indie of This Nausea and Analogue Dialogue (Kill The Beat) you’re bound to find something that will be stuck in your head for the rest of the week. For a taster of what to expect, check out the insanely catchy (if a little overly Rocky) Speak Your Mind for a fine example of Scarlet Soho’s big catchy choruses and waves of lush synths, or this stripped back EBM reMix of What You Need, by Canadian EBM legends Psyche who deliver a nice combination of Piano and unprocessed electronics. That’s just one of the exclusive tracks appearing of this album including a reMix from Kosheen and live material.

[Audio] Cut Copy’s ‘We Are Explorers’

Modular have just released another new track from Australian ElectroPop outfit Cut Copy’s forthcoming new album, Free Your Mind. Alongside recent singles Free Your Mind and Let Me Show You, album track We Are Explorers helps give us a full picture of what to expect form their long awaited fourth album.

We Are Explorers is pretty classic Cut Copy. Shockingly infectious ElectroPop, all buzzing synths and crazy purcussion. With a nice hint of the 80s, over some rocking power Indie-Electro. As you’d expect from Cut Copy, the song itself is whimsical, anthemic and ridiculously catchy. Which tempers the abrasive synths, synths that drop moments of chainsaw grind and Acidic burbling amongst the retro chords. We are definitely looking forward to this record.
