[Book] Mad World: An Oral History Of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s by Lori Majewski & Jonathan Bernstein

madworld

It’s not often that we get sent non-music promo items, occasionally there will be booze, or gadgets, and there was that time Chromeo sent us a phone, but generally it’s Records and CDs. Last week, though, we got sent a book. That book was Mad World: An Oral History Of New Wave Artists And Songs That Defined The 1980s. It was was written by Lori Majewski and Jonathan Bernstein, both long time music journalists with a vested interest int he 80s. I’m a big reader, but I can barely string two words together to write a music review, let along tackle a book review.

So here is a book review.

Music books are notoriously hit or miss, more often being disappointingly miss. The last great music book I read was Last Night A DJ Saved My Life by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton (which is an amazing history of DJing which is well worth the read), 80s music books in particular, usually make me annoyed with their generalizations of superficial coverage of the topic so I delved into the book with trepidation. However, the way Mad World is constructed is both fun and pretty in depth. What you have is each chapter being dedicated to a particular classic song from the 80s and it’s content being an interview with one or more of the creators. So, for example, the chapter on Yazoo’s Only You features Vince and Alison talking about their relationship and making the record. This is a great format that allows you to pick up and put down the book when you’ve got a spare minute and learn something genuinely insightful about a handful of SynthPop hits and a brief look into the mind of some of the biggest names of the 80s. Those present and correct include The Human League, Heaven 17, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Thomas Dolby, Howard Jones, Kim Wilde, The Normal, Duran Duran, ABC, Devo, A-Ha, Thompson Twins, OMD, Ultravox and many more.

So, yeah, book review. I really enjoyed it. Even though it’s a ‘dip in’ type volume, I read the thing from cover to cover. The fact that it’s 99% the voices of the artists who made these records makes it both more interesting, and accurate, than if a third party has just written about the tracks.

Also, there’s tons of photos, and photos from the 80s are a good thing.

One tiny niggle I did have with the book; being an American publication it has these translations for English terms throughout that tends to be a bit patronising and jarring a little. It’s an annoyance that pulls you out of the book. I know much of the books audience will be American, but I’m sure they have enough common sense to realise a “bin man” is what they would call a “garbage man”, context is a wonderful thing.

That aside though, It’s really good read, I would definitely be interested in a Volume Two being released, there’s tons of songs I would love to read about in this format.

[Audio] PWNDTIAC’s ‘Ready’ (+ Douze reMix)

PWNDTIAC

At the end of the month, German Disco demon PWNDTIAC has releases his brand new single. It’s called Hey Girl and it’s a fairly standard Nu-Disco floorfiller with loads of lovely nods to Boogie and Electro Funk. It;s well worth a listen, but it’s the B-side, Ready, that really caught out attention. Featuring the talents of fellow German digitalfoxglove; Ready is a soaring space oddessy.

Filled to bursting point with thick robotic bass and cosmic keys; Ready is a vocoder laden monster that takes both 80s Boogie and French Disco as references and wraps them up in a post-Italo machine Funk. Vocally, the track mixes up some surprisingly soulful vocoder work with little Soul II Soul samples with really nice effect, like a duet between Caron Wheeler and a sad robot. For us, though, it’s that bassline that really draws us in, thick and punchy it seems to evolve through the track. French producer Douze offers his version of the track on the release; upping the B-Boy beats quota. Douze delvers one of his trademark synthetic journeys, mixing up Funk and cinematic SynthWave, he slowly builds the track until an unexpectedly energetic high. The whole release is definitely worth your attention when it;s released later this month.

[Audio] Leo Kalyan’s ‘Over You’

Leo Kalyan

We first featured Londoner Leo Kalyan back in September of last year with his smokey reMix of Ellie Goulding’s Burn. He’s the neighbour of a friend of ours, which is an interesting way to get a blogs attention, we might even put it on our submissions page as a requirement. Had Leo’s music been awful, things might have got a little awkward, luckily for us, and for your ears, Kalyan produces some of the slicked laid back Pop around, the kind of stuff we can seriously see propelling him to chart appeal.

His latest tune is Over You, it was produced with a little help from Karma Kid and MNEK and delivers just the right amount of swing, with just the right amount of haze, and just the right amount of Funk, to be the perfect lazy summertime tune. Underpinned with a thick, warbling, bassline, the track’s intricate production serves as an evolving, synthetic soundscape for Kalyan’s smooth as silk vocal delivery to flow over. This’ll get your head nodding by the pool.

[Audio] Cyclist & Maiko’s ‘Sunrise’

Cyclist

One of our favourite Canadian producers Cyclist had once again teamed up with fellow Canadian Maiko Watson to deliver one of the most pleasing tunes of the summer so-far. Last time these two teamed up it was for Cyclist’s awesome track Shine, this time they take it to the next level with some of the most blissful vibes you’ll hear this year.

Injecting both Cyclist’s jazzy groove and Maiko’s smokey R&B vocals into a solid Nu-House tune has produced a real ‘musicians’ Disco tune. Titled Sunrise, the track is so dripping with sunkissed nostalgia and soul that it’s hard not to get sucked into it’s smooth depth. With a slight Motown vibe hidden amongst it’s Cosmic synth Disco and poolside House façade; Sunrise had a vibe that truly lives up to it’s name. Optimistic and passionate, Mark and Maiko have served up a tune that never gets old (really! we’ve had it on repeat for ages!), and a timeless track for discerning dancefloors.

Australian Indie-Electro champs Cut Copy recently released this video for Meet Me In A House Of Love, taken from their storming album of last year, Free Your Mind.

It’s a pretty carefree clip, which fits with the bands music well. Nicely tongue-in-cheek.

[Audio] Blank Paper’s ‘Whip’

blank-paper_thumb

Brooklyn SynthPoppers Blank Paper’s new tune sees them setting the scene for their eagerly awaited new EP. After a string of well received tunes, this foursome are finally set to unleash the real thing. Having previously treated us to Step Into My Office and Ambien Blank Paper bring us something a little more soulful. This is Whip.

Whip sneaks a little R&B flavour into Blank Paper’s spikey SynthPop. Guiding their 80s influenced sound into more Electronic Soul of the era’s territory, Blank Paper deliver their usual icy keys and live drunk, but this time add  a bit of swing and a touch of boogie. It forms a nice contract with Marie Kim’s cutting vocal delivery and the stabbing chorus is pure nostalgia. Black Paper have been a bit of a dark horse in recent months and we’re left with the feeling that we’re looking forward to their EP a lot more that we were expecting to. Bring on July.

Last week UK  ElectroPopstar Chlöe Howl released the new video for her track Disappointed. Slick modern Pop that is slated to be her next single.

The video tells a story through the medium of Roller Derby. Which is fair enough.

[Audio] Ride The Universe reMix Chromeo’s ‘Jealous (I Ain’t With It)’

Chromeo

Picture the scene. It’s 2011, a sunny May. We’re still using  Five months earlier LA’s finest Dreamwavers Fiero (now Leisure Council) had teamed up with German Nu-Disco powerhouse digitalfoxglove. Calling themselves Ride The Universe they’d gained a little attention with a handful of slick reMixes, but nothing would prepare the world for what was to come. 11th May they unleashed a reMix of Canadian Funketeers Chromeo’s Hot Mess that was so massively awesome, floor slammingly funky, so relentlessly badass, that it still had the power melt brains three years later. It’s one of our favourite reMixes of all time, it set the tone for the trademark Ride The Universe sounds, and it’s why we fell in love with them.

Seconds out! Round Two! They’re bringing it back, Delivering their Chromeo reMix: the sequel, the Ride The Universe boys has got to grips with Chromeo’s recent single, Jealous (I Ain’t With It) (taken from their really quite good new album, White Women) as part of the currently running reMix competition. The prize is cash, and these four deserve it for two very good reasons. Firstly, they’ve never met, some of the prize money would go toward shipping digitalfoxglove off to LA to actually meet his band-mates and get to work on that damn album; and secondly some of the prize money will be donated to a kid’s music education charity. Sounds like a worthy cause to us. The reMix itself is pure smoothness. A blissful LA Funk vibe permeates every pore of this tune; working it’s laid back squelchy synths around Dave P’s vocals, creating an urban late night groove for the more discerning dancefloor. Complemented by starlight chimes and a sauntering rubble of bass, this one’s got everything to swing to under the city lights. Vote for this bad-boy here, never has there been a more deserving reMix competition winner.
