Olivaw

Olivaw

What is it with Russia right now? They are cleaning up the SynthWave and of Nu-Disco and claiming it for their own. There is so much stuff to have come out of that part of the world in the past year, and almost all of it is so good it puts much of the rest of the world to shame. Olivaw is next in line. Hailing from Arkhangelsk in northern Russia, Olivaw is quietly making some of the grooviest Outrun you’ll hear in a while.

His latest track, Summer Breeze, is a buzzing, swirling, intoxicating tune. A no-worries nostalgic vibe that carries you along with it, embraced by warm retro synths and buzzing lead lines. Olivaw has got a handle on the Outrun beat perfectly, Italo influenced but not to overpowering, just right to drive the track along. His older tunes include the massive Disco tinged SynthWave of Sleepless Nights, a track that piles on layer after layer of melodic, soloing madness and The Guardians Of Time a punchy classic ‘80’s soundtrack inspired jam, all big beats and rousing synths. In unusual for a new SynthWave artist to hit the ground running in such a slick, polished style, but Olivaw has marked himself as one to watch. The denizens of Russia nail retro synth once more.

Poolside’s new single

Poolside

The sun is shining, it’s almost the weekend, what better time for LA Indie-Disco dup Poolside to drop a new single. In keeping with the good summer vibes, Scion Audio/Visual are selling the single for the price on an email address. That’s essentially a short run of alphanumeric characters and an ‘@’ symbol, swiftly typed in using your fingers for around 10 seconds, in exchange for two blissful Disco jams that someone worked in a studio for weeks on. Now there’s a bargain!

Only Everything is pure beach party gold. Laid back and loaded with Funk, it’s a track that will hypnotize you with it’s walking bassline. A head nodding instruction that underpins some smooth piano and lazy, hazy vocals that will carry you away like a gently wave. These guys aren’t called Poolside for nothing! The B-side, Take A Chance, adds a ‘70’s Disco vibe and some LFO’d vocoder to the mix to take their ‘daytime Disco’ grooving into the night time. Filip Nikolic & Jeffery Paradise said this about their music “We’re not saying you HAVE to be near a pool to appreciate it, but the glimmering slow-paced daytime disco marries well with leaning back in your chaise to watch others dance in or nearby water. Poolside sounds exactly like what every day would be like in a perfect world; long, warm, lazy and slightly intoxicating.”. Mission definitely accomplished we say.

Fred Falke reMixes Atlas Genius

Australian Indie-rockers Atlas Genius have been making quite the noise in Alt Rock circles these past few months. This seems to have culminated in a major label signing and money to pay good, talented, people to make their tunes less derivative Rock. Enter French Touch legend Mr.  Fred Falke to take a good, albeit standard Rock, song and make it an amazingly catchy big ElectroPop number.

Falke’s reMix of Trojans seems to tell the track to stop mucking around with pretension and ‘authenticness’ and get get on and have a bit of a dance and a good time. Riding, what is a really good vocal, with burbling synths and a Disco beat is just the thing, but it’s the soaring lead line that really makes this track pop. When it kicks in it’s one of those moments you’d just love to experience live. ElectroPop anthem style.

Dublin Aunts’ ‘Heartbreak Reputation’ reMixes

dublin-aunts

So, Australian Disco outfit Dublin Aunts début release, Heartbreak Reputation, caused a bit of a stir when it was released last month. it was slick, funky and catchy as hell and destined to rock discerning dancefloors all summer. But what happens if you’re providing a remix for the track but miss the deadline? What to do? What to do?

Well, if you’re Dublin Aunts you release the tardy remixes as a free EP! Some things just need to see the light of day. Up first is Liaison with the smoothest of smooth groves. Pure laid back summery goodness coasting along on squelchy synth bass and wicked little Disco licks. The king of the edit Late Night Tuff Guy brings his sweet Disco sound to the track, real late ‘70’s stuff. LNFG works his magic and turns in a classic vintage Disco hit. AB/TC’s take on the tune takes things to a deep place. A dubby take on Disco that mixes licks with low basses and echoing swirls. All in all not bad in exchange for a Facebook like.

Moon Boots’ ‘Sugar’

Moon Boots

American producer Moon Boots is seriously cementing his reputation as one of the best Nu-Disco producers working today. Especially in the last few months, he;s been wowing us time and time again with his slick retro Disco track and reMixes . His latest track, Sugar, does noting but add to that rep and débuts itself as the perfect hot weather soundtrack.

Riffing off Janet Jackson’s If,  you could go so far as to say Sugar is an extreme reMix (as in it’s a completely new tune with Jackson’s vocals). Moon Boots really plays to his strengths here, that late ‘80’s funky, synth R&B flavour, that laid back LA beach party Disco vibes, and hint of Tropical just to make it even more feel good and a slick , engaging arrangement. The real ride here, though, lies in the retro Funk bassline and big ‘80’s synth stabs. Moon Boots has give us another, perfect, summer tune and hopefully this being released by French Express means an EP is on the way.

Flight Facilities reMix Miike Snow

Miike Snow

We’re not quite as Flight Facilities mad as the rest of the world seems to be, we like them a lot but feel they tend to be a bit hit and miss, but when they hit the really do hit. and this track hits. Which is all the more odd to find out that this reMix for Miike Snow’s last single, The Wave, was finished back in May and FF never heard back about it, to this day they don’t know if they missed the deadline, or it was rejected, or what?

If it was rejected then Miike Snow’s label are idiots, this is a stunning peice of deep Disco. Everything about it is so understated, which makes the whole more impressive. Driven by a deep deep bassline and subtly piano (no crashing 90’s House riffs here), the reMix keeps the original song intact, but draws it to a laid back place of steady groove. The music is just the right side of bombastic to highlight in seriousness of the lyrics, but keeping things funky as hell.

Russ Chimes’ ‘Back 2 You’

russ-chimes

It was back in May that we featured a radio rip of Russ Chimes’ forthcoming new single, Back 2 You, when it was given a first play on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. We were as excited by it back then as we are now. Moreso now as the single has a release date, and we can now check out the song proper.

Long-time readers will know that Mr. Chimes is a bit of a goldenboy round these parts. He’s walked home (figuratively, of course) with a few electronic rumors end of year awards over the years and so far, in our eyes, has yet to do wrong. And with the release of Back 2 You, that line is unbroken. Constantly moving and evolving his sound, Back 2 You sees Russ delivering a big House track with an underlying Disco groove. A pulsating Chicago style bassline underpins the track, creating a core for Russ’ trademark densely layered production to lay out big stabs, an anthemic vocal sample, those big drum fills we love Russ for and even some ChipTune riffage. Sounds like a lot? Well, Chimes fits everything into place with an effortless talent for big tunes. Last time we visited this track we commented “This is how you make dance music.” Seriously, this is how you make dance music.

New tune from Bit Funk

bit-funk

This new jam from Brooklyn based producer Bit Funk is everything a summery Disco-House tune should be. Not only does it work in just the right elements for a good-times-in-the-sun track, but it captures just the right mood, without feeling forced. Partying in the sun this weekend, let this be your soundtrack.

Probably the most Housey thing Bit Funk has released, It’s My Love rides on a deep Chicago bassline, a body shaking groove that plays to the summer party vibe perfectly. Bit Funk keeps the energy levels high with a rapturous 90’s House piano hook to compliment the diva vocal samples, and just the right among of Disco licks to nod to his roots. The track’s got a bit of a shuffle to it, and is actually quite Bristol House, but then again I would say that…

Like Vipers

Like Vipers

Like Vipers is new new UK Electro-House producer who is just about to release his début EP. With a sound the bridges the gap between the Electro-House end of Nu-Disco and SynthWave his new EP, titled Dangerous, released next month on Bonerizing is four tracks of power Outrun.

It’ll be hard to write about the Dangerous EP without mentioning Kavinsky and Danger, particularly Danger, so we’ll just get that out the way now, because we are talking in the same ballpark, there’s e a bit of Mille in there too. But whilst Like Vipers shares a lot in common with his contemporaries, he also manages to craft out a sound of his own. Dramatic, cinematic and full of bombast Like Vipers’ tune are a relentless action set-peice. After the ominous opening of Cold Steel comes Accelerator, a hard hitting night-drive Electro extravaganza who’s centrepiece is a stratospheric solo. For a track with power drums and chainsaw synths, the tune has some hauntingly beautiful moments. Pulseheart continues the EPs quest to soundtrack your high-speed chases, if you’re the kind of person who has high-speed chases, while Dangerous brings a little Italo groove into all this pedal-to-the-metal Electro power. the whole EP is a juggernaut of SynthWave. An emotional, exciting, noisy, chaotic, soaring experiance that leaves Like vipers a name to watch.

Estate’s new tune

estate

Here’s the new tune from Minneapolis Disco trio Estate. These guys have been pushing out a steady stream of quality Nu-Disco tunes and reMixes over the past few years, and their style just gets smoother and smoother. Vu Du is a dirty summer jam that will have you moving in the heat.

Vu Du rolls along with cut up samples and twisting synth lines. Equal parts funky and cosmic & magical, it’s a track that caters for all your needs. A deep walking bassline is the main weapon in this tune’s arsenal to make you move. undulating and infectious, it’s irresistible. Once you’ve succumbed to the power of the bassline, let the wall of synth sound fill your mind, swirling lead lines and waves of pads  wash in and out of the track like waves of dreamlike noise. Half heard snatches of vocal samples ebb and flow throughout the track. It’s a heady listening experience.
