Poolside’s new single

Poolside

The sun is shining, it’s almost the weekend, what better time for LA Indie-Disco dup Poolside to drop a new single. In keeping with the good summer vibes, Scion Audio/Visual are selling the single for the price on an email address. That’s essentially a short run of alphanumeric characters and an ‘@’ symbol, swiftly typed in using your fingers for around 10 seconds, in exchange for two blissful Disco jams that someone worked in a studio for weeks on. Now there’s a bargain!

Only Everything is pure beach party gold. Laid back and loaded with Funk, it’s a track that will hypnotize you with it’s walking bassline. A head nodding instruction that underpins some smooth piano and lazy, hazy vocals that will carry you away like a gently wave. These guys aren’t called Poolside for nothing! The B-side, Take A Chance, adds a ‘70’s Disco vibe and some LFO’d vocoder to the mix to take their ‘daytime Disco’ grooving into the night time. Filip Nikolic & Jeffery Paradise said this about their music “We’re not saying you HAVE to be near a pool to appreciate it, but the glimmering slow-paced daytime disco marries well with leaning back in your chaise to watch others dance in or nearby water. Poolside sounds exactly like what every day would be like in a perfect world; long, warm, lazy and slightly intoxicating.”. Mission definitely accomplished we say.

Fred Falke reMixes Atlas Genius

Australian Indie-rockers Atlas Genius have been making quite the noise in Alt Rock circles these past few months. This seems to have culminated in a major label signing and money to pay good, talented, people to make their tunes less derivative Rock. Enter French Touch legend Mr.  Fred Falke to take a good, albeit standard Rock, song and make it an amazingly catchy big ElectroPop number.

Falke’s reMix of Trojans seems to tell the track to stop mucking around with pretension and ‘authenticness’ and get get on and have a bit of a dance and a good time. Riding, what is a really good vocal, with burbling synths and a Disco beat is just the thing, but it’s the soaring lead line that really makes this track pop. When it kicks in it’s one of those moments you’d just love to experience live. ElectroPop anthem style.

Flight Facilities reMix Miike Snow

Miike Snow

We’re not quite as Flight Facilities mad as the rest of the world seems to be, we like them a lot but feel they tend to be a bit hit and miss, but when they hit the really do hit. and this track hits. Which is all the more odd to find out that this reMix for Miike Snow’s last single, The Wave, was finished back in May and FF never heard back about it, to this day they don’t know if they missed the deadline, or it was rejected, or what?

If it was rejected then Miike Snow’s label are idiots, this is a stunning peice of deep Disco. Everything about it is so understated, which makes the whole more impressive. Driven by a deep deep bassline and subtly piano (no crashing 90’s House riffs here), the reMix keeps the original song intact, but draws it to a laid back place of steady groove. The music is just the right side of bombastic to highlight in seriousness of the lyrics, but keeping things funky as hell.

Casiokids‘ quirky Olympics.

Casiokids

Obviously not happy with the state of Olympic music as is (and, to be fair it is mostly cringe inducing cash-ins) Norwegian left field ElectroPop gang Casiokids have decided to give away their track, Olympiske Leker, for free along with a brand new version. The whole thing is odd, it’s probably the least sporty track ever, but that’s probably a good thing.

If you haven’t already heard the track, it was one of the standouts from their Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen album, it’s typically Casiokids eclectic. Lo-Fi, but not sparse, the synths are cheap, but there’s lots of them. It’s a juddering, and insanely catchy track with a deceptively majestic melody. Quirky ElectroPop with an ice cold exterior but a warm heart. The V.2 take on Olympiske Leker, is a bit more dancefloor aimed (but only a bit) which adds energetic beats to the mix. Casiokids are launching their own Olympics in Twitter, the winner of the best suggestion for a new sport to be included in the Olympics will receive their album and a Gullbrød (Golden Bread) chocolat. #casiolympics on entries.

Shy Child reMix Age Of Consent

Age Of Consent

We love keytar wielding NYC Indie-ElectroPoppers Shy Child, it’s been far, far, too long since we heard anything from them. In fact, we had feared they had thrown in the towel. Luckily for us London ElectroPop outfit Age Of Consent  has shown us differently by getting the noisy twosome to reMix their awesome current single Heartbreak.

Shy Child continue the funky journey the began with their fourth proper album, Liquid Love. And Age Of Consent gives them excellent tools to work with, their post-Italo/dark ElectroPop belter is the perfect fodder for a makeover by Shy Child’s hybrid of New York Disco and abrasive Indie-Electro. Shy Child bring a wobbly bassline and some of that New York electronic eclecticness to the table and completely changes the mood of the track from one of Industrial jackhammer Pop to relaxed electronic cool that would work just as well in the club as on the headphones.

Starcadian reMixes Freedom Fry

Freedom Fry

Brooklyn based SynthWave/Disco/ElectroPop producer Starcadian is rapidly becoming one of out very favourite producers. The richness of his productions is pretty astounding, and his love of electric piano just endears him to us more. It seems that whether immersed in big pedal-to-the-metal Electro or gentle Indie tinged Disco, Staracdian is completely at home and not afraid to do something a bit left-field.

His latest reMix is of fellow New Yorkers Freedom Fry ‘s Summer In The City. Here’s Starcadian captures the mood of hot asphalt and a greenhouse of skyscrapers with a lazy, hazy, groove. Stripped down to almost the core of electronic piano and vocals, this track really shows off Starcadian’s musicality and penchant for jazzy melodies. It also has a lonely quality to it, the sparse instrumentation feeling quite separated, quite distant. Let this gentle jam soothe you in this heatwave.

Goin’ Old School: Chic, EMF & Break Machine

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

The funky as hell Hangin’ (falsely titled Hangin’ Out here) from the legendary Chic in 1982.

In 1989 EMF mashed up Pop, Indie, House, ElectroPop and Hip Hop with their breakthrough Unbelievable. Derry was an inspiration to keyboard players everywhere.

Almost completely copying their first hit Street Dance, Here’s Break Machine’s hilarious follow up, Break Dance Party, from 1984.

Young Digerati’s ‘Endless Bummer reMixed’

Young Digerati

Bay Area Indie-ElectroPop outfit Young Digerati’s recent ‘Endless Bummer EP was a skilful mix of jangly Indie and retro ElectroPop. A lot more guitary than their previous output, something that normally has us on the fence, the EP did contain some catchy tunes. Good news then that some of the finest SynthWave reMix talent has come along to give those tunes a good old synth workout. Smooth grooves incoming.

The whole EP, all five tracks, are all pretty superb, ranging from Electro-House, to Italo to Dreamwave, but out picks would be the work contributed by Silenx, 80s Stallone and Sex By Surprise. Silenx wow us one again with his super slick production on his reMix of Peak Performance. Injecting a little more funk into his sound than usual, Joel goes full on Cosmic Disco. Adding the core of the last couple of years of some of the best SynthWave around, he adds some funky slap bass and Moog-esque stabs, to a truly galactic Funk experience. Also taking on Peak Performance, 80s Stallone hits the ground running with his 80’s sound, immediately Italo, from the arpeggiated bassline to the EuroPop riff, before raising the track up with some big retro chords. The vocal is used sparsely in 80’s Stallone’s take, but Chris Stallone’s melodies more than make up for it. The EP rounds off with SxS’s robotic Electro take on Young Digetati’s biggest tune to date, The Dauphin. Normally associated with a laid back beach party vibe, SxS turn the track into an Electro-House anthem, packed with nervous energy and bright, intertwining, synth lines. Did we mention the EP is free, that’s five top quality tunes for no money whatsoever. Bargain!

Chad Valley reMixes Mausi

Mausi

Three out of the four time was have features Newcastle Indie-Electro crew Mausi has been for their track Sol., they are certainly milking this track for every inch of mileage it holds. A dangerous tactic to be sure, coasting a whole year on one track, regardless of how good it is, has a chance of people burning out on it. Anyhoo, next in line to drop a reMix of the track is Oxford’s Chillwave don Chad Valley. His reMix, along with the original, is apparently getting released, again, next month.

On the upside, however, Chad works his lush, evocative electronic magic on the track. A swirling, comforting, wash of gentle synth sounds and relaxing percussion with a slight R&B flavour. In the kind of heatwave we in the UK are having right now, you just don’t want to do anything, Chad’s rEMix kinda’ give you an excuse. Just chill for a while with this tune.
