Housquare’s ‘Rubis’

Here’s the latest in French outfit Housquare’s continuing quest to bring the ‘90’s back right in-your-face. Now on Cheap Thrills Housquare have an even larger platform for their unapologetically Chicago House sound that they like to mix up with contemporary production.

Their new track, Rubis, serves as a bridge between their Old Gem EP and their forthcoming new release, Subshine, but as a stand alone it sums up everything we love about Housquare perfectly. There’s classic breakbeats, rave stabs, House piano, and that kind of dark ominous undertone to the track that all the best early ‘90’s House tunes had. Housquare has the early ‘80’s House sound down pat, there’s actually few who do it better.

Just some of those Barry Manilow reMixes

Right then, by now I think you all know our opinion of reMix contests. They aren’t good for anyone. But we’re not going to go on about it again, but like we said we’re only going to do round-ups of reMix competition entries from now on, because, don;t get us wrong, reMix competitions do churn out some absolutely wicked tracks. This week’s tiresome competition comes in the surprising form of legendary smoothster Barry Manilow in a transparently lame attempt to seem relevant, or something. The upside of this is it’s given some very talented producers access to that unmistakable croon.

So here’s the first batch of reMixes of Manilow’s new single, Everything’s Gonna’ Be Alright. These guys are way ahead of the pack right now. American Disco producer Blue Satellite comes out of hiding to drop an absolutely massive Nu-Disco mix of the track. Seriously, this one is huge. Loading the track with bright synths and a solid Disco groove was exactly the way to go with this track, and Blue Satellite nailed it. Waling a different path if Ireland’s Figure Of 8, who gets a little Techy, a little Electro and a little Experimental with his all-too-short, atmospheric, reMix. His pulsating synth sounds and robotic beats shine a light on a whole new dimension for the song. Greetings Program plays around with Disco and SynthWave for his reMix, injecting the track with a little Electro Boogie. This probably isn’t the last Manilow round-up we’ll do, we are hearing whispers of some huge entries incoming. But this will do for now.

Icarus!’s ‘Woot’

Every blog I know was bombarded with this track yesterday, it was like social media carpet bombing. But y’know what?, the track is really good. It comes from Colombian producer Icarus! and it’s called Woot (for some reason)

It’s a really well crafted slice of Disco-House, and although track like this are ten-a-penny these days, there is something really compelling about this one. The chord progression hits just the right note for the track, elevating above it’s bog-standard Disco-House contemporaries. The bassline too, and the way it feeds the rest of the track make this a standout production. Occasionally, we are quite pleased we got bothered on all our social media accounts. This is one of those times. Nice one Icarus!

Aashton & Swift’s Holy House

Their press release would have you believe that Aashton & Swift are from Brighton. They’re not, well, one is (Aashton), the other (Swift) is from Bristol, the greatest of all cities. Bristol is not amused by this heinous of errors and demands blood. If not then at least get your ears ‘round their new single on Body Work. Holy House, released next month.

Holy House hard as hell to pin down, but once you slip into it’s groove it’s hard to get back out again. A light Chicago House refrain floats over some seriously heavy Deep Tribal House creating this exotic, hypnotic musical mantra that draws you in and doesn’t let go. Immensely funky, Holy House is pure late night jam. Covenant the track’s flip side brings in Aashton & Swift Electro Boogie side a little more, shining a light on their Disco fuelled digital bass. It’s a track that in equal amounts brings to mind both sweaty House dancefloors and B-Boy spinning on their heads. There sounds like some early Juan Aitkins in there somewhere. Tronic Youth finish up the single, taking Holy House and layering it with their eclectic Disco sheen with some shiny percussion and a range of Dub effects. It’s a solid single, and one that’ll have you hitting repeat.

Here’s the new one from German smooth groove-meister Xtrafunk. Missing Words comes hot on the heels of his acclaimed reMix of Goldroom’s Fifteen and keeps the laid back Disco momentum going, adding a little Housey vibe to the mix.

Missing Words is the prefect antidote to any stresses in your life, there’s no way you can stay wound-up with this tune playing. It just lets you sink into it’s slick Disco licks, warm synths and relaxed House beat. With easy, breezy, beach Funk like this, you can practically feel the waves lapping at your toes. Monsieur Adi’s ‘Youth’

When French Nu-Disco/SynthWave genius Monsieur Adi dropped his new track, Youth, we weren’t sure if it was his reMix of Foxes’ Youth re-named. Luckily it turned out to be a brand new track. Not that there’s anything wrong with his Foxes reMix, we love it, but it;s always nice to have a new Adi track.

And this one’s surprising. Definitely more big room than we’re used to from Adi. There’s a lot less of Adi trademark excellent orchestration and a lot less of his synthesizer Disco. What we have hear is Adi trying his hand at a sunrise style tune that is ripe for Ibiza this summer. He still manages to work a fair does of his lush strings into the mix, but this one is all about the builds and big post-Euphoric Trance riffs. Should Adi want to continue down this road, he’ll be very good at it, one of the best, but we’ll miss the Disco a bit.

Citizens! reMix The Cast Of Cheers

The Cast Of Cheers

Irish Indie-Rockers, and part of the upcoming NME Generation Next tour, The Cast Of Cheers have one of the best band names in the world. They also seem to have good taste in reMixers, as they have got London Indie-ElectroPoppers Citizens! to make some beats and bash some keys for their track Human Elevator.

Citizens! take to track to a bass-heavy place, then liberally sprinkle biting melodies over their deep groove. This is a track with a nice combination of classic a SynthPop feel and dancefloor rocking sensibilities. Rough and ready gritty bass presents a rock steady back beat for piercing lead lines and sparsely, but perfectly, used snatches of the original’s vocals to dance around atop. It’s quite a sparse track, but everything in it is used to it’s fullest potential, it’s would also sounds awesome on a club system.

Todd Terje & Lindstrøm

A couple of weeks ago Norwegian Housemeister Todd Terje released a couple of extended edits of Lindstrøm’s recent A-Side Eg-Ged-Osis/Ra-Ako-St. Fellow Norwegian Lindstrøm had already roped Terje in to mix the tracks anyway, so whipping up a couple of Edits seems thing the thing to do. What results is some seriously epic, sweeping, atmospheric Disco.

Eg-Ged-Osis is the more hypnotic dancefloor trance inducer of the two. An undulating, repeating, Acidic groove runs through the track. It takes elements from Balearic and euphoric Trance, but works then in Disco, and strangely Scandinavian, ways. Building and building and building, whipping any dancefloor into a frenzy, Eg-Ged-Osis is relentless in it’s hands-in-the-air groove. Ra-Ako-St is more dramatic and majestic. Rooted in Cosmic Disco the track kicks off with a gritty Italo bassline that soon gives way to more House and Disco oriented tropes and a whole layer of Sci-Fi synths. It’s a space-age voyage through uncharted galaxies, cinematic, but funky as hell. This double A-side might just be the surprise hit of the year in certain dimly lit Disc haunts in the capital.

Chew Lips reMixed by XXXY

Chew Lips

In the build up to the release of their awesome new single, Hurricane, Chew Lips (feels weird writing it like that) have release yet another shiny reMix of the track. This time stepping up to the reMix plate id London House guru XXXY. Time to get bassy.

XXXY’s reMix is totally Chicago House fun, and strikingly Chew Lips track, particularly Tigs’ vocals fit that perfectly. It’s all deep square wave basses, ‘90’s House piano, there might even be a little accordion in there, and while this hypnotic groove might seem antithetical to Chew Lips’ chaotic liveness, it actually all works so smoothly. We always knew what a classic, powerful voice Tigs’ had, but with a ‘90’s House backing, her voice seems to go into full-on diva mode.
