Russ Chimes’ ‘Back 2 You’

russ-chimes

It was back in May that we featured a radio rip of Russ Chimes’ forthcoming new single, Back 2 You, when it was given a first play on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. We were as excited by it back then as we are now. Moreso now as the single has a release date, and we can now check out the song proper.

Long-time readers will know that Mr. Chimes is a bit of a goldenboy round these parts. He’s walked home (figuratively, of course) with a few electronic rumors end of year awards over the years and so far, in our eyes, has yet to do wrong. And with the release of Back 2 You, that line is unbroken. Constantly moving and evolving his sound, Back 2 You sees Russ delivering a big House track with an underlying Disco groove. A pulsating Chicago style bassline underpins the track, creating a core for Russ’ trademark densely layered production to lay out big stabs, an anthemic vocal sample, those big drum fills we love Russ for and even some ChipTune riffage. Sounds like a lot? Well, Chimes fits everything into place with an effortless talent for big tunes. Last time we visited this track we commented “This is how you make dance music.” Seriously, this is how you make dance music.

Mitch Murder’s Glass Cities’ EP

Mitch Murder

I’m not sure Johan Bengtsson A.K.A Mitch Murder sleeps anymore. In the months leading up to the release of his amazing second album, Current Events, the Swedish SynthWave king was pretty quiet. Since then, though, we have been treated to a year of constant new tracks, new EPs and new reMixes, almost weekly. And never once had the man missed a beat, never once has he released something anything less than the very best SynthWave. Next month sees another new EP, the man just doesn’t stop.

At the beginning of next month the Glass Cities EP is released, not by Johan’s usual home of SynthWave central, Rosso Corsa, but on new Irish imprint DhARMA. DhARMA have given Mitch free rein to do what he does best. From the opening, and title, track you are immediately back in Mitch Murder mode. After a imposing cinematic intro Glass Cities make a brief nod to Zoolook era Jean Michel-Jarre with it’s just of woody melodies and vocal samples as an instrument. It’s a tack make of pure 80’s bliss that glides effortlessly into Last Call, which seems Mitch add a little Trevor Jones into the mix, ,and is an amazingly smooth and emotive pallet cleanser before the high-octane Outrun of Heading South, a full on post-Italo race to the boarder. Hopeful and uplifting, this track mirrors the best inspirational ‘80’s soundtrack peices and leads into the club soundtrack of Shoot The Core! with flying lead lines. Best Of The Best lulls you into a false sense of security with slick 80’s Pop drums and big emotional chords before treating you to some of Mitch’s best Malmsteen-esque synth shredding. Ever optimistic, with a hint of melancholy, like the best ‘80’s music, Mitch constantly amazes with his mix of part Italo, part 80’s soundtracks, part sheer synthesizer joy. The EP also holds a reMix from Sylvester, who bring the Electro Boggie to Glass Cities, and this bonus mix from Norwegian duo Nite Sprite who inject a little Nu-Disco electro noise into Heading South. Most of this collection has been available at one time or another in the past year, Mitch Murder’s output is verging on prolific these days, but to have all these tracks together, in high quality, is really something special. Obviously for Synth Wave fans this is a must have EP, but for any fans of synthesizer music, Mitch Murder comes so highly recommended it’s difficult to put into words.

Shy Child reMix Age Of Consent

Age Of Consent

We love keytar wielding NYC Indie-ElectroPoppers Shy Child, it’s been far, far, too long since we heard anything from them. In fact, we had feared they had thrown in the towel. Luckily for us London ElectroPop outfit Age Of Consent  has shown us differently by getting the noisy twosome to reMix their awesome current single Heartbreak.

Shy Child continue the funky journey the began with their fourth proper album, Liquid Love. And Age Of Consent gives them excellent tools to work with, their post-Italo/dark ElectroPop belter is the perfect fodder for a makeover by Shy Child’s hybrid of New York Disco and abrasive Indie-Electro. Shy Child bring a wobbly bassline and some of that New York electronic eclecticness to the table and completely changes the mood of the track from one of Industrial jackhammer Pop to relaxed electronic cool that would work just as well in the club as on the headphones.

New tune from Bit Funk

bit-funk

This new jam from Brooklyn based producer Bit Funk is everything a summery Disco-House tune should be. Not only does it work in just the right elements for a good-times-in-the-sun track, but it captures just the right mood, without feeling forced. Partying in the sun this weekend, let this be your soundtrack.

Probably the most Housey thing Bit Funk has released, It’s My Love rides on a deep Chicago bassline, a body shaking groove that plays to the summer party vibe perfectly. Bit Funk keeps the energy levels high with a rapturous 90’s House piano hook to compliment the diva vocal samples, and just the right among of Disco licks to nod to his roots. The track’s got a bit of a shuffle to it, and is actually quite Bristol House, but then again I would say that…

Churches’ ‘Lies’ video

Here’s the new video from Scottish ElectroPop hopefuls ChurchesLies. A track we were sure would have been released by now.

It’s a nicely shot bit of footage from a gig at Glasgow Art School that works well as a video for this Minimal Synth/rapturous Pop line-walker.

Starcadian reMixes Freedom Fry

Freedom Fry

Brooklyn based SynthWave/Disco/ElectroPop producer Starcadian is rapidly becoming one of out very favourite producers. The richness of his productions is pretty astounding, and his love of electric piano just endears him to us more. It seems that whether immersed in big pedal-to-the-metal Electro or gentle Indie tinged Disco, Staracdian is completely at home and not afraid to do something a bit left-field.

His latest reMix is of fellow New Yorkers Freedom Fry ‘s Summer In The City. Here’s Starcadian captures the mood of hot asphalt and a greenhouse of skyscrapers with a lazy, hazy, groove. Stripped down to almost the core of electronic piano and vocals, this track really shows off Starcadian’s musicality and penchant for jazzy melodies. It also has a lonely quality to it, the sparse instrumentation feeling quite separated, quite distant. Let this gentle jam soothe you in this heatwave.

Goin’ Old School: Chic, EMF & Break Machine

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

The funky as hell Hangin’ (falsely titled Hangin’ Out here) from the legendary Chic in 1982.

In 1989 EMF mashed up Pop, Indie, House, ElectroPop and Hip Hop with their breakthrough Unbelievable. Derry was an inspiration to keyboard players everywhere.

Almost completely copying their first hit Street Dance, Here’s Break Machine’s hilarious follow up, Break Dance Party, from 1984.

Jordan F’s ‘Summers Of Tomorrow’ redux

Jordan F

Australia’s finest SynthWave export Jordan F originally released the Summers Of Tomorrow EP last year. It was kinda’ just before the excursion with his alter-ego Countach. Now he’s fully back in Jordan F mode he’s revisited the EP, it’s been refreshed, remastered and has a little track list tweak. The all-new Summers Of Tomorrow EP is heading your way right now.

Beginnings kicks of the EP, and the differences are readily apparent. This version is a lot slicker. Gone is the abrasive bass sound, replaced by a more atmospheric tone, and the whole production is a lot more well rounded. Everything sits together a lot nicer, for an instrumental, soundtrack peice such as this it makes all the difference. Whilst the original has an Italo rawness, these track sound a lot more mature. Abandoned Streets is abandoned in favour of it’s Crime In Fourth Sector counterpart, and again, the remastering is a revelation. Softening the gritty synth work allows the rhythm a section to carry the song a lot more fluidly. The neon drenched dystopia theme works it way into the track a lot better with this version, the powerdrive soundtrack Electro feeling more comfortable with itself. Dream Machine, the EP’s new addition, was obviously written with unicorns in mind, a pulsing electronic haze that Vangelis would have been proud of. Renegade probably benefits the most from the reworking, the whole track working as a rich emotive Italo stomper much better with everything lying tighter in the mix. The EP’s title track, a outro, Summers Of Tomorrow, is here fully allowed to realise it’s epic, Sci-Fi, majesty without the drums overbearing. Actually, it’s the drums where you hear the biggest difference in this remastering, they don’t dominate the tracks anymore, they become part of them. Jordan F is easily in the top five musicians making SynthWave right now, without a doubt, but this new found maturity to his productions will push him even higher. There may be an album coming soon, and that’s exciting as hell.

Young Digerati’s ‘Endless Bummer reMixed’

Young Digerati

Bay Area Indie-ElectroPop outfit Young Digerati’s recent ‘Endless Bummer EP was a skilful mix of jangly Indie and retro ElectroPop. A lot more guitary than their previous output, something that normally has us on the fence, the EP did contain some catchy tunes. Good news then that some of the finest SynthWave reMix talent has come along to give those tunes a good old synth workout. Smooth grooves incoming.

The whole EP, all five tracks, are all pretty superb, ranging from Electro-House, to Italo to Dreamwave, but out picks would be the work contributed by Silenx, 80s Stallone and Sex By Surprise. Silenx wow us one again with his super slick production on his reMix of Peak Performance. Injecting a little more funk into his sound than usual, Joel goes full on Cosmic Disco. Adding the core of the last couple of years of some of the best SynthWave around, he adds some funky slap bass and Moog-esque stabs, to a truly galactic Funk experience. Also taking on Peak Performance, 80s Stallone hits the ground running with his 80’s sound, immediately Italo, from the arpeggiated bassline to the EuroPop riff, before raising the track up with some big retro chords. The vocal is used sparsely in 80’s Stallone’s take, but Chris Stallone’s melodies more than make up for it. The EP rounds off with SxS’s robotic Electro take on Young Digetati’s biggest tune to date, The Dauphin. Normally associated with a laid back beach party vibe, SxS turn the track into an Electro-House anthem, packed with nervous energy and bright, intertwining, synth lines. Did we mention the EP is free, that’s five top quality tunes for no money whatsoever. Bargain!

Like Vipers

Like Vipers

Like Vipers is new new UK Electro-House producer who is just about to release his début EP. With a sound the bridges the gap between the Electro-House end of Nu-Disco and SynthWave his new EP, titled Dangerous, released next month on Bonerizing is four tracks of power Outrun.

It’ll be hard to write about the Dangerous EP without mentioning Kavinsky and Danger, particularly Danger, so we’ll just get that out the way now, because we are talking in the same ballpark, there’s e a bit of Mille in there too. But whilst Like Vipers shares a lot in common with his contemporaries, he also manages to craft out a sound of his own. Dramatic, cinematic and full of bombast Like Vipers’ tune are a relentless action set-peice. After the ominous opening of Cold Steel comes Accelerator, a hard hitting night-drive Electro extravaganza who’s centrepiece is a stratospheric solo. For a track with power drums and chainsaw synths, the tune has some hauntingly beautiful moments. Pulseheart continues the EPs quest to soundtrack your high-speed chases, if you’re the kind of person who has high-speed chases, while Dangerous brings a little Italo groove into all this pedal-to-the-metal Electro power. the whole EP is a juggernaut of SynthWave. An emotional, exciting, noisy, chaotic, soaring experiance that leaves Like vipers a name to watch.
