[Video] Goin’ Old School: Howard Jones & Koto

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

Original Tropical? First up we have one of our favourite SynthPop artists Howard Jones with

Like To Get To Know You Well from 1984.

And some Italo madness from 1986 with Koto’s Jabdah (h/t Jules Schimmer).

[MP3] The Knocks reMixed by Viceroy

The Knocks

You know the best kind of Disco is going to happen when the kings of New York Disco The Knocks are reMixed by San Francisco’s beach party groovemeister Viceroy. The result is a blissful, incredibly Poppy, slice of good time summertime vibes.

Did we mention how Poppy this was? Because it really is, melding the most fun elements of Nu-Disco with a particularly American blend of R&B tinged Pop, Viceroy and The Knocks whip up something of a poolside jam that doesn’t have a care in the world. With big beats and an almost Caribbean feel to it, this mix of Magic layers on the heavy, pumping, snyths thick which, when combined with Gary Go’s  laid back, almost 80s, vocal makes for untroubled, breezy, four minutes of Disco escapism.

[Audio] Juveniles’ ‘Strangers’, with reMixes from Jupiter & Le Crayon

Juveniles

French ElectroPoppers Juveniles are back this week with a brand new single and some tasty reMixes. Strangers was released yesterday, this first since last November’s Through The Night re-release, and is taken from the duo’s forthcoming début album. reMixes in the package come from the stellar line-up of Jupiter and Le Crayon.

Strangers is a rollicking slice of Indie-Electro produced by none other than Yuksek, and you can tell. The track has a bit of that Yuksek raw Disco sound. Heavy on the bass, Strangers works subdued verses in order to deliver the anthemic good in the choruses. Fellow French duo Jupiter’s take on the tracks is hypnotically basslined Space Disco epic where strange synth melodies intertwine around each other and the vocals. In contest, Le Crayon bring the proper laid back vintage Disco vibe to the song, using spacious electric piano and a warbling bass tone to roll-out an solid groove. All-in-all, we think the Jupiter version is out favourite, but the whole single is good work.

[MP3] Pat Lok’s ‘Crazy Juice’

pat-lok_thumb_thumb

“I made some not disco” Canadian, er, Disco, producer Pat Lok exclaimed on Twitter yesterday evening. Well, for a start he wasn’t lying, and it’s awesome to see producers playing fast and loose with genres. Many artists produce their best work when experimenting and branching out, and let’s face it Nu-Disco is getting a bit repetitive, it’s no wonder the more creative on the scene want to spread their musical wings.

So where does that leave Pat, the track Crazy Juice is a brooding Chicago House/early 90s Rave crossover that keeps Lok’s funk, but channels it toward a darkened warehouse. Loaded with shuffling 909 beats and a big warping bassline, Crazy Juice brings the kind of strobe light vibe that takes us back to our youth. One for a full-on night out.

[MP3] Neptune Safari

Neptune Safari

We love it when surprises drop into the electronic rumors Inbox. Yesterday new Parisian Nu-disco producer Neptune Safari dropped by to show of his latest track. His début track too, and what a confident début it is. More polished and thoughtful than many releases in the Nu-Disco spectrum, with one track Neptune Safari has marked himself as one to watch.

Adeline Is In A Water Drop is a meaty title for a track, but befits the Smörgåsbord of laid back grooves presented here. Deep walking Disco bass and silky smooth synths wash through the track, accompanied by little starlight melodies, as Adeline Is In A Water Drop carries you away with it to more chilled, funkier, places. We’re very impressed by Neptune Safari’s premiere track.

[MP3] Lifelike reMixes Futurecop!

futurecop_thumb

A couple of weeks ago we gave you the skinny on Futurecop!’s new single, Atlantis 1997, mentioning that there was a remix on the single from French Touch pioneer Lifelike. Well now, as the single draws ever closer to it’s late March release, we can give you a listen to that very reMix. Its downloadable too!

Atlantis 1997 is a carefree Dreamwave track in which Ricco Vitali from Cavaliers Of Fun delivers a anthemic, summery vocal. Lifelike uses this vocal to it’s fullest over a big filtered Disco backing. Concentrating on the songs chorus, and adding a few chop-up into the mix, Lifelike delivers punchy bass, smooth keys and slick sheen that can only come from being a master of your art. This mix swirls around your ears like euphoric smoke, drawing you into it’s groove.

[MP3] Let Em Riot’s ‘I Know’

Let Em Riot

We have a treat for you to kick off the week. A new freebie from Californian retro SynthPop artist Let Em Riot. Riding high on the success of his SlashWave EP (released via electronic rumors) Let Em Riot presents I Know, his latest masterpiece, for the incredibly cheap price of an email address.

I Know is just the kind of top quality trip you’d expect from this guy. Nostalgic, without being trite. Catchy without being reparative. Beautiful without being, er, not-beautiful. I Know breezes out of your speakers and when, after the tension building verse, the track launches into it’s sweeping, epic, chorus you can’t help but be hooked. It’s difficult for us to big up one of out own artists, but Alan Oakes really is one of the best songwriters in electronic music right now, hell that’s why we signed him, and I Know is just further proof of this. If you haven’t experienced Let Em Riot yet, here’s your gateway.

[Audio] Tesla Boy’s ‘1991’

Tesla Boy

Russian crew Tesla Boy are easily one of the best ElectroPop acts around today. Since their emergence in 2008 with a demo EP on their MySpace site they have been champions of a retro 80s sound. With overtones of Disco, Indie and SynthWave, these guys have always kept it 80s. Until now. their new single, cunningly titled 1991, is loaded with early 90s musical references. A new direction for Tesla Boy, or a one-off? Only time will tell.

1991 is all Hip Hop beats, samples vocal snatches and a Pop House vibe, and ‘y’know what? It works. Mainly due to Tesla Boy’s talent, these guys are master songwriters and performers, it’s not surprise that when they break their meld they can still deliver the goods. With their interpretation of the Soul II Soul Back To Life beat and big House synths, Tesla Boy still manage to sound like Tesla Boy and deliver an optimistic song that probably mirrors a new found sense of optimism in Russia in 1991 with the birth of the Russian Federation. The reMix line-up for the single it pretty impressive too. Portuguese Disco guru Xinobi takes his time with the track and delivers a smooth, slick Disco-House rework before dropping in some sumptuous Dub grooves and making thoroughly intoxicating summer dance track. Fellow Russians 7he Myriads go with a live sounding vibe and put the 80s back into Tesla Boy, while Fon.Leman turns-in a complex big room tune with hints of Disco and Progressive House in it’s massive euphoric sound and some hands-in-the-air Trance overtones. Along side these three sit  further remixes from Tonefiction, DZA and SoundSam in a stunning, recommended, reMix package.

[MP3] Irish Steph’s ‘Paddy’s Craic’

Irish Steph

So, yesterday was St. Patrick’s day (out Irish friends can have some big ups) and fittingly, confusingly named French producer Irish Steph dropped a free tune to celebrate. This is no frivolous party tune, no throwaway free download, this is an Electro Disco powerhouse that does some really clever things with traditional Celtic instruments.

Well, that’s if you find chopping them up and reworking them into new hooks and melodies clever, which we do. When that spark of originality is mixed with a track that flows effortlessly from groovy vintage Funk to slick Disco-House to full on gritty Electro-House, without breaking a sweat we have to respect that. So whatever you’re celebrating, Irish Steph’s Paddy’s Craic will get the job done.
