Violet Tremors’ début album

Violet Tremors

Hold on to your soul, the first ladies of Minimal Synth, Violet Tremors, are about to drop their début album, the awesomely titled ‘Time Is The Traitor’.

The opening track ‘Between Us’ is well chosen, atmospheric and harsh, the track taken no prisoners and utilises vocal processing in a way that, like much of VT’s tracks, makes me think of early Cabaret Voltaire. The combination of Sparse beats, early EBM and Daniel Miller style synth work and haunting pads with vocals that are not quite human sets the listen up well for the rest of the album. Jessica White & Lorene Simpson do a good job of authentically recreating the early days of the Futurists and the sonic experimentation that cantered around Sheffield and Mute Records. The record swings, at times, from harsh and aggressive, as with the Industrial ‘Concentrate’ to the ice cold machine beats of the likes of ‘Caution’ to almost warm, enveloping tracks like ‘Time Dissolver’. Throughout, though, the girls display a keen ear for both melody and texture, and a production skill that suites their sound perfectly. What’s surprising though, is that it’s not all doom and gloom. That is to say that although the record is as fine an example of Minimal Synth as you could ever care for, there is little of the irritating pretension so often heaped onto Minimal Synth records, there’s actually a lot that would kill on any New Romantic dancefloor. I guess what I’m saying is that there is just as much ‘80’s in this album as there is Minimal Synth, and Violet Tremors passion for their sound and their influences shines through.

Treasure Fingers’ new track

Treasure Fingers

Treasure Fingers, being the generous fella he is, has given away a brand new free track and a thank you for all his fans support.

‘Take My Hand’ will totally Disco up your week. A pure Disco-House floorfiller, smooth and soulful but with enough kick to get the party moving. It’s quite a trick to get things sounding this banger, but this slick too, but that just shows why Treasure Fingers has made the name for himself that he has.

Tubetops

tubetops

Brooklyn based four peice  Tubetops are funky, catchy, nerdy, DIY and quite handy with a synth.

They’re gearing up to release their début EP in December, seven tracks of varied and eclectic Indie-Electro that flows from jangly Indie to Trip-Hop to LA Funk. The self-titled EP is a hard record to pin down, some of the tracks are so stylistically different from one another, yet Tubetops have a certain warmth, and a certain sound, that seems to tie it all together. Despite the different moods the is a a strong vein of Funk shooting through the collection, tracks like ‘Aquamarine’ and ‘Here With You’ are approaching that particular LA Nu-Funk inspired brand of Dreamwave, whilst elsewhere their New York Indie roots shine though in summery IndiePop stormers.

Curxes

Curxes

Brighton based duo Curxes are bringing a little ‘Construction Time Again’ Depeche Mode back to SynthPop.

This twosome’s music may, at first glance, seem to be lurking with the dark Pop side of things, the  occasional wall of sound and melancholy give you that impression, but on further listening there is actually more uplifting about their sound than not. Roberta’s powerful post-punk vocals are easily strong enough to carry songs soaring, not that the songs need to be carried, musically a combination of Depeche Mode’s early industrial experimentations, Japan’s enveloping bass, and just occasionally, Pet Shop Boys early flirtations with Disco. With both a dark grin and the purest of Pop sensibilities, Curxes’ songs are immediately involving, drawing you in on the first listen and offering more with repeated plays.

Orangewood

Orangewood

What happens when LexiconDon crooner Alex Koons teams up with producer Brandon Light and gets drunk? Orangewood, that’s what. A new dimension of groove.

Orangewood’s EP is available on Bandcamp, and it’s an eclectic affair. there’s a lot going on within the four tracks, a lot of influences and a lot of experimentation, but the duo never let’s things get out of hand. They’re going with the flow, but keeping it funky. The opening track, ‘Dick Daniel’ is like a Shoegaze guitarist jamming out over a Disco influenced ‘80’s TV Theme and provides a nice set up for the rest of the EP as you start to get a handle on what to expect. Following on from that the EP starts to bring in strands from everything from Cosmic Disco to R&B to Dancehall to Dub. ‘Too Long For A Good (A Childhood Medley)’ stands out as the ‘hit’, the only track with vocals all the way though, but don’t be expecting a LexiconDon-a-like, ‘Too Long’ is a strange combination of the Tropical and New York Indie, and even a little very early Smashing Pumpkins run through all the fun the studio can offer. There’s pretty much something for everyone on the EP, and at the amazing low price of free, you can’t really not dip your toe into the world of Orangewood.

Monsieur Adi & Blue Satellite reMix Kylie

kylie

Official releases are a strange thing. So often I hear remixes from artists I love that were officially commissioned and then shelved in favour of generic PopHouseTrance from the likes of Freemasons or Stargate, despite being more interesting, more musically adept, and having more groove than the throwaway versions that end up on the single.

Such is the case here with reMixes of Kylie Minogue’s summer hit ‘Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love)’ from a couple of amazing producers Monsieur Adi and Blue Satellite. I won’t bother talking about the competent, but ultimately generic dross that made the release, but they aren’t a patch on Adi’s impressive, multi-layered, edgy Electro track that throws a bit of everything into the mix, all kept in check by Adi’s mastery of his music. Or Blue Satellite’s track, which would have been a perfect summer Disco anthem, I can’t help feeling Kylie’s label missed a trick there (I’m not sure if BS’s was actually commissioned, but either way they still missed out).

Billie Ray Martin’s ‘Twisted Lover’

billie-ray-martin

Billie Ray Martin’s ‘Twisted Lover’ originally appeared on the ‘BRM New Demo’s 2003’ album in it’s ‘Old Version’ form. Now the lovely Ms. Martin has seen fit to give away this brand new version of the track.

What was once a Deep-House flavoured SynthPop track has now upped the tempo and upped the analog Disco. Racing Moroder-esque arpeggios drive the track along and seem to morph Billie’s vocals from the soulful lament of the original to a huge diva performance. Add to that some infectious synth melodies and you have a huge ol’ track!
