[Audio] Little Boots’ ‘Broken Record’

This week ElectroPop goddess (yup, she’s been promoted) Little Boots released her new single, and second post-album-announcement taste of what we can expect from her new long player, Nocturnes. Broken Record once again give is a hint that the new album is going to be full of surprises. Free from major labels and expectation, this feels like a more comfortable Victoria, just a Pop but free to explore what that means to her.

With DFA founder Mr. Tim Goldsworthy at the helm for most of the new album, with contributions from Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford and Hercules And Love Affair’s Andy Butler, the new record promises to be more of an introspective, experimental affair. Broken Record is a bewitching slice of deep, Housey, ElectroPop. With it’s throbbing bassline and swirling mist of synths, cut through with Victoria’s vocal, this time portraying a sense of urgency, Broken Record delivers the prefect four minutes of danceable DreamPop, then goes a bit Acid.

[MP3] Little Boots’ ‘Motorway’ + album news

The wait is (almost) finally over. Little Boots has finally announced details of her second album. After months of teasing in the form of the singles Shake, Every Night I Say A Prayer and Headphones (two of which make the new records tracklist, the insanely infectious Headphones remains in single land) Boots has dropped the new records title and release date. Titled Nocturnes, the album is set for release in May and features production assistance from the likes of DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy, Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford and Hercules And Love Affair’s Andy Butler.

Our first (new) taste of what the album holds comes in the form of Motorway. We first heard Motorway back in summer last year when she played XOYO, at the time we commented that it would be a good album lead-in track (not that anyone will believe us), and it so obviously is, showing off perfectly what the new record is all about. Whether Boots is making Dance Music more personal, or personal music more dancy, she walk the line, here, between a deep, hypnotic, dancefloor groover and a gentle, haunting, SynthPop epic. Injecting a fragile humanity into dark, intoxicating, House beats, Little Boots delivers a spellbinding track, both musically and vocally. The big ominous, yet somehow uplifting, grand piano doesn’t hurt either.

[Audio] Little Boots & Maya Jane Coles & James Ford, oh my!

So, we’re breaking tons of rules here. Our own rules that is. Fist up, we’re posting clips of tracks, which is a massive no-no for us. Generally, anything under 3m00s will go straight in our Inbox trash, regardless of who delivers it. Secondly, we’re using an ugly as hell Juno player. As a rule we’ll only use content delivery systems we can at least a little bit hack to make it fit the site’s aesthetics, the Juno widget is an ugly beast that’s you can’t even resize, which really messes with our 500px format. However, this release is a) amazing and b) only available on vinyl. If it remains only on vinyl, this might be your only chance to hear it, so rule breaking ahoy! But it’s a one off, do not expect us to make a habit of it, so on your bike with your 1m45s clips!

And what’s caused all this ruckus then? It’s a 12”, released yesterday, by LB, and once you’ve heard the vocals you’ll be pretty confident as to what LB stands for. The track, Superstitious Heart, is a collaboration between Little Boots, Maya Jane Coles and Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford. The track was written by The Boots, Maya and Ford with Maya stepping up on production duties. Deep and Techy sounds abound, as you would expect for this line up. Musically Maya’s influence seems to stand out, but we can also hear The Boots indulging her well documented love of 90s House. The shuffling beat and rounded bass are beautiful and hypnotic, while The Boots opts for a suitably intimate performance. The track is backed up with another Deep House tune. On Whatever Sets You Free, The Boots teams up with London producer Baunz to drop some ethereal warehouse vibes. The 12” is rounded off with Dub version of both tracks. If the tracks ever hit some kind of new fangled internet streaming service we’ll bring you a closer look, but, if you’ve got decks, this needs to be on them.

Little Boots covers Bronski Beat

When we got an email this morning, with the subject line declaring that Little Boots had covered a Bronski Beat track, a little voice in the back of my head was chanting ‘please be Hit That Perfect Beat, please be Hit That Perfect Beat’. It’s not. It’s Smalltown Boy. A bit more of an obvious choice, but no less exciting, and probably better suited to Victoria’s talents.

Because I have to say, right now, that Vicky sings Smalltown Boy better than Jimmy. That’s a terrible thing to say, I know, but it’s true. She completely makes this track her own, vocally, the track seems to have been written for her, and she really brings her A-game. Musically the track has been lifted into a huge ElectroPop missile aimed squarely at the dancefloor. Peppered with haunting piano, set amidst the Disco-House beats, this cover seems to miraculously play into all Little Boots strengths. Hit That Perfect Beat might not have, so things probably turned out for the best. If you missed it last week, here’s Boot’s reMix of Jupiter’s Juicy Lucy (Needs A Boogieman) too.

Jupiter’s ‘Juicy Lucy (Needs A Boogieman)’, with Little Boots, Punks Jump Up and Zimmer

Juicy Lucy (Needs A Boogieman), the title track from awesome French ElectroPop duo Jupiter’s début album is getting s single release this week, in all it’s Moog Funk glory. It’s accompanied by an absolutely stunning reMix package.

It;s hard to say Juicy Lucy (Needs A Boogieman) was one of the standouts of the album, when the album contained nearly one-hundred percent killer tracks, but it certainly was one of the tracks that sticks in your head, with it’s twisted P-Funk bassline and infectiously catchy chorus. It’s the prefect mix of sweet ElectroPop and warm French Disco. Our girl Little Boots delivers a majestic reMix that mixes up a deep 90s House vibe with a few Cosmic elements. Vicky brings a hypnotic dancefloor groove, layered with and uplifting piano hook and some great robo-vocoding. Punks Jump Up go down the warped Disco route with their reMix, the funky squelch bass powering the track along and commanding you to dance amidst the piercing synth stabs. Belgian angled Disco-meister Zimmer takes us down a Kraftwerk meets Moroder road with his take on the track. A deep electronic, at times Acidic pulse, that belies some seriously beautiful melodies.

Little Boots reMixed by Moon Boots

A while back, we claim that we had made our last post about Little Boots’ current single Headphones, luckily we used the caveat ‘probably’ because there another awesome new reMix. This reMix comes from another kind of boots, a Moon Boots. The American Disco producers has combined his talent for Boogie with Little Boots infectious Pop to create a pair of Little Moon Boots that’ll rock your socks.

Moon Boots gets his Nu-Disco groove on with the funkiest of the Headphones reMixes so far. Sparsely sprinkled with Tropical percussion, Boots (the Moon variety) lays on the bouncy synth bass and sparkling lead lines thick, crating a relaxed dancefloor gem that flows perfectly with Boots (the Little variety)’s vocal. It’d be a toss-up between this and Dimitri From Paris’ mix for our favourite, I think they both take the top spot for different reasons.

Dimitri From Paris’ full Little Boots reMix

OK, the is (probably) the last post about Little Boots’ new single, ‘Headphones’, we promise (but keep our fingers crossed just in case). But we have to sat some quick words, because Dimitri From Paris has made the vocal version of his reMix available on his SoundCloud, and as we’ve mentioned in ‘Headphones’ posts previously, it;s the single standout reMix. So if you haven’t bought the single yet, this should be more than enough convincing.

This track is pure late ‘80’s gold, in much the same way that Fear Of Tigers’ reMix of Ronika’s ‘Only Only’ rocked our world, so does this. It;s got that same, slightly Bomb Da Bass feeling to it, but this track is far more Top Of The Pops, more electronic Soul, with a killer bassline and big stabs. You can read our enthusings about the Dub version here, just imagine that with Victoria’s sweet vocal all over it. Instant classic. On top of that, this extended version has a proper, good old, 12” extension to soak up some more cowbell!

Little Boots & Ronika

Little Boots

So, after a week of all things Little Bootsy and ‘Headphonesy’ you should have probably picked up the single by now, we won’t bother telling you how good it is again, thanks to the wonders of the internet you can go back and read out enthusing so we don;t have to type them again. But if you need still further convincing you a) probably hate fun and b) should check out our girl Ronika (Madonna Of The Midlands™ *sigh*)’s reMix. But be warned, it’s not what you expect.

What it is, is a fantastic late ‘80’s electronic Soul track, sung by someone who may have once been Little Boots before being pitched down an octave or two. The pitching suddenly warps Victoria into some kind of post-Motown Diva, accompanied by a shimmering soundtrack that actually quite dark in places. It’s a sumptuous track, that stands apart from it’s bedfellows on the single, delivering itself as practically a different song. A smooth groove amongst the frantic retro Pop. It’s unusual for someone to try something this daring with a reMix, and pull it off so well, especially on what could be considered a mainstream release. Most producers would play it safe. That Ronika just went with what she felt is something to be saluted.

Dimitri From Paris’ Little Boots Dub

If on Monday you picked up Little Boots’ new single, ‘Headphones’, (and if you didn’t, why the hell not?) you would have been treated to two amazing reMixes. Firstly from our girl Ronika, who delivers a pitch bent grove laden jam. Secondly from Dimitri From Paris, who’s ‘80’s Disco Pop reMix is pure TOTP gold (which actually reminds us a little of Fear Of Tigers reMix of Ronika’s ‘Only Only’, our number one track of last year).

The man has just released the Dub version on his SoundCloud so you can check out the B-Boy bassline, the retro Electronic Soul beat and the big keyboard hits. All this is ties together nicely with an FM bassline running a nice groove and, of course, all the cowbells in the world. there’s even a whistle in there, what more do you need to know. Dmitri’s really channelling the poppier side of Mantronix here, and that’s awesome. You really should go buy the single for the vocal version, but for the time being, roll out your lino and stick the dub version in your boom box. You’ll be poppin’ and lockin’ in no time.
