NeonFlashDrive’s ‘Dark City’

Here’s the new tune from UK SynthWave producer NeonFlashDrive, a brooding slice of electronic soundtrack work inspired by the 1987 animé Wicked City. Even though Wicked City is pretty horror based, what NeonFlashDrive has done with this tune is capture the vibe of what was, in our opinion, the golden age of Cyberpunk animé. This track could have quite as easily been influenced by Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed, Armitage III, Akira or Ghost In The Shell.

Built around ominous synth pad that immediately install a dark future mood, NeonFlashDrive soon takes us on a sonic journey through a neon soaked dystopia with Dark City. With nods to Italo and SynthPop in it’s driving arpeggios, digital bass and haunting, ringing, melodies. Don’t think it’s all mysterious soundtrack stuff, this track’s got a groove to it too!

Mitch Murder’s ‘Daybreak’

Hot on the heels of his recent MARS EP, which was hot on the heels of his awesome Current Events album, comes this new hot track from SynthWave legend (Yes. I said legend. What?) Mitch Murder. All that being hot on the heels stuff must be pretty hard to keep up with, but Mr. Murder keeps releasing tune after tune that literally blows 95% of his peers out of the water. When Mitch drops a new SynthWave track, it;s in a totally different ballpark.

Daybreak is his latest offering, captures the good vibes of Tropical Disco and the sunrise euphoria of Balearic House, takes those feelings and applies them to his deeply musical SynthWave. The ability to conjure a mood in music, and to let that music resonate the mood back to the listener is on of Mitch Murders biggest strengths, and here the man delivers the ambience of sunrises, deserted beaches, waves lapping at their shores. Not a place Mitch has taken us to before, but one he handles with effortless perfection. This is synthesizer art, Mitch paint a aural picture for the listener with rich synth textures.

Met Mitchell

Dutch SynthWaver Met Mitchell is one have of production duo Legan And Met, who we’ve featured here a once or twice. He’s just dropped a couple of new solo tunes that show his journey into vintage synth music is about to go to the next level.

Folding in a little ChipTune into his SynthWave, Met’s Echoes Like Shadows is a synthetic journey through retro sounds. Taking the soundtrack feel and emotional resonance from SynthWave and the video game sounds of ChipTune and combining them with a solid Italo groove makes for a pretty sweet track. A rich listening experience, Echoes Like Shadows is an impressive solo début. It’s follow up, En Route, is a slightly smoother affair, the synths are still buzzing and piercing, but the overall mood is more relaxed. This pensive track weaves along under a beautiful lead line, using lush synth sounds to thoughtful effect.

Mindscramble reMixes Swagbot

OK, try an ignore the fact that Swagbot is a truly terrible name, the guy is a young Canadian producer who generally makes some pretty decent Italo noises. But right now just sit back and enjoy the massive SynthWave sounds that Manchester’s Mindscramble has produced in reMixing him.

Mindscramble (which, no dis, isn’t gonna’ win prizes in the names category either), conjures up such a rich tapestry of synthetic sounds with is reMix of Planet X that it’s hard not to get lost in this track. Intricately programmed riffs fly left and right while a solid, but emotional, rhythm section keeps the densely layered tune in check. It’s hard to produce tracks with so much going on, the mix is hard to get right, but Mindscramble seems to handle the balance with ease. With an underlying euphoria that shows Mindscramble’s roots this reMix is both driving and emotionally resonant, and what more could you ask for on the dancefloor?

Touch Tone reMixed by Final DJs

Germany’s finest, Final DJs, have joined the reMixing Touch Tone’s Home Away From Home party and the thought of that eipc vocals combined with Final DJs epic synth solos is pretty exciting indeed. Still riding high on the release of their recent Gossip Country Final DJs are on a roll right now, let’s see if they can keep it up.

Their reMix of Home Away From Home is probably the funkiest thing they have released to date, there’s very little of the SynthWave Final DJs in here. Instead what we are treated to is head on collision between Nu-Disco, Tropical and House. With a bassline, guitar lick and strings that are pure ‘70’s Disco and a beat and piano hook straight out of Chicago, the Final DJs mix up a slick, summery vibe that really plays with the vocals. They’ve pushed the rhythm of the chorus back a bar which makes the chorus seem more urgent, giving the laid back beach vibes a bit of drive. Guaranteed to get you moving, Final DJs mix has injected some much needed boogie into our Wednesday.

Flamingo Drive’s ‘Every Time I Think Of You’

German king of Boogie Tim Bernhardt A.K.A. Satin Jackets presents the new single from his Flamingo Drive project this week via Cardiff’s awesome Pole Position Recordings. Satin Jackets collaborator Eric Cozier once again team up with the man to supply some slick vocals over the Flamingo Drive synthetic Disco groove.

Everytime I Think Of You picks up where the last release, Strange World on Mullet Records, left off, but while that track was an energetic digital Disco workout, Everytime I Think Of You takes the listener to slightly more chilled places. Folding in some early ‘80’s ElectroPop influences into the Nu-Disco sound, Flamingo Drive pulls off a shimmering slice of retro synthesizer Pop with a lazy Disco groove, while Cozier’s vocals seem to float in the distance. Of course there’s a Satin Jackets reMix, where Bernhardt goes all out on the percussive Nu-Disco. With a dirty grit to the production, Satin Jackets rock vintage drum machines and an B-Boy Electro bassline to put the Boogie back into Electro Boogie while keeping it smooth and summery at the same time. The single also contains an infectious Deep House mix from CRAM and the instrumental version of the original. Perfect timing now the weather is getting warmer, this single is made for summer party time.

Com Truise’s ‘Open’

Com Truise, A.K.A. Seth Haley, SynthWave genius, retro Electro god, and all round electronic soundscape master, has announced the release of a new album, In Decay. Rather than a new studio work, it’s a collection of tracks that have previous only been available as demos online, or not at all, mostly dating from before the first official Com Truise releases.. Ghostly International is releasing the album next month, and have gives us a teaser in the form of Open.

If the whole collection is like Open, then we are very much looking forward to this. Future retro awesomeness abounds in this track. Seth’s massive ‘80’s influences shine through in his Sci-Fi soundtrack by way of Bronx Electro Hip Hop. All tough beats and soaring lead lines. Military funk from the bassline and dystopian synths layer on this track. No-one captures a dark future OST quite like Com Truise and we’re always eager for more.

Auxiliary Tha Masterfader’s ‘Electric Disco’ EP

Auxiliary Tha Masterfader is a Dutch Nu-Disco maestro who’s name will be more than familiar to serious synthesizer Disco aficionados. It;s been a while since his The Disco Dictator EP but he returns this week with a brand new release on On The Fruit Records, the Electric Disco EP is truly a thing of beauty, if you like soaring synths, cosmic Disco and vocoder heaven.

The EP kicks off, and quite rightly too, with Masterfader Theme, an impeccably produced Disco epic, that is one part Vangelis, two parts Moroder with equal nods to Cosmic Disco and Italo dancefloors. With a solid rhythm section and a slick late ‘70’s style hook all that’s needed is some vocoded vocals. Oh wait, they they are. Totally a theme tune to be proud of. If Masterfader Theme is Aux’s introduction then Mirror Ball is his dancefloor manifesto. Both rocking and poking fun at the Discotheque at the same time, Mirror Ball bounces along on an Italo bassline and layers it with lush Disco stings, big retro chords and our beloved electro toms. As Aux’s mantra vocoded vocals wash over you it’s hard not to be impressed with the effortlessly perfect production. The man has his studio skills down pat, Mirror Ball is right on the money. As is London Cosmic Disco duo Cosmonauts’ reMix of the track, which lends some piercing vintage synth leads to the tune and brings a laid back, summer-nights-in-space, vibe. The EP also comes with another original Let’s Go a seriously chilled final credits-esque nostalgic jam and a huge Dub of Cosmonauts’ reMix. Auxiliary Tha Masterfader is pretty much taking the Nu-Disco scene to school with this EP, showing ‘em how it’s done.

Skeleton Lipstick

Skeleton Lipstickis an ElectroPop/Chillwave/SynthWave/Indie-Electro mash-up outfit out of Philadelphia. They’ll be releasing their début LP next month and in anticipation of that have just droped a free EP.

The You Think You Know Me? EP sits in that nice space between SynthWave and Chillwave. Whilst SynthWave at it’s core, retro beats and vintage lead lines abound. The Lo-Fi recording ethos and washes of reverb swing it toward the Chillier side of things. Skeleton Lipstick like to write on “old, broken, circuit bent or abandoned synths that are difficult to program and work with but yield very rewarding results”, and it comes through as part of the Lo-Fi feel, toytown synths and ChipTune elements work their way into the track’s DNA. I even heard some VL-Tone in there somewhere. the EP’s title track, You Think You Know Me? is probably the EP’s most accessible. A funky little synth number with floaty vocals and a surprisingly Disco groove. Like an 80’s Pop hit heard through a vintage radio, Skeleton Lipstick experiments with electronic sounds and recording techniques but the catchiness of the song shines through. As with I Find All Your Love So Vain, the EP’s most SynthWave track, which sounds like an ‘80’s U2 hit, played though a distortion pedal and then given a Disco reMix. Retro through the grit of Lo-Fi, Skeleton Lipstick keeps it both experimental and infectious at the same time. All four tacks on this EP are worth your attention.
