Keith Masters’ new album

Keith Masters

If you are at all a fan of retro Electro you’ll have probably, possible unknowingly, got down to Mr. Keith Masters before. He’s the provider of rhymes on Futurecop!’s track, including the amazing ‘Tonite’s Hero’. This week the man drops his new album, ‘Electromajic: The Remixtape’ on Keiz Beats.

The album, and Keith’s music in general, is a strange beast. It’s genre destroying, that’s a phrase I absolutely hate but in this case it’s actually true. There’s a lot of ways you could describe Keith’s style, but when it comes down to it what you’ve got here is SynthWave and Nu-Disco Hip Hop. And it works, it works so well. There’s two really great elements to what’s on offer here; the music is real slick retro ElectroPop, mixed up with the occasional Hip Hop beat amongst the soaring synths and Keith’s rhymes are so involving. Littered with pop cultural references, hipster commentary and geek Easter eggs alongside the expected raps, all delivered with a laid back flow that suits the music in an unexpectedly perfect way. if you’re looking for something a little different, you could do a lot worse than check out Keith Masters’ ‘Electromajic: The Remixtape’.

Cosmonaut Grechko’s ‘Youmi’

cosmonautgrechko

Ooo, a little bit of newness from the man Cosmonaut Grechko. He’s been somewhat quiet of late but if this new track is anything to go by that time has been well spent.

‘Youmi’ is a surprisingly blissful and euphoric slice of Dreamwave wit a bit of an early-nineties-watching-a-sunrise-in-a-field-with-Orbital-playing vibe to it and not nearly as Disco as his previous works. This is more of an atmospheric electronic side to Grechko, and the atmosphere is one of optimism and good times. A feel good tack for the summer.

Human Life’s ‘Don’t Fade Away’ with Shook & Kartell

humanlife

Fresh from their team-up with Pelifics on ‘Can’t Promise Anything’ this week California based ElectroPop act Human Life release their new single on Vulture Music.

‘Don’t Fade Away’ is what Human Life do best. Summery, catchy ElectroPop with a feel good factor and a slight edge. Driven by piercing synths and call-and-response male & female vocals, ‘Don’t Fade Away’ is a pretty simple, stripped down version of SynthPop, but the simplicity really works and and allows the song to breathe. The consistently amazing Shook contributes a reMix to the single, brining his highly technical Nu-Disco to the table, creating a smooth jam that changes the mood of the vocals into something more relaxed and let’s Shooks musical talent shine. Kartell also chooses to drop a chilled groove,. There’s more of a beach vibe to this one, it’s ‘Don’t Fade Away’ tropical style.

Adeyhawke’s new tune

FULL_02

Adeyhawke is back with a brand new track and this time he’s mixing up the SynthWave with some funkin’ Nu-Disco and some slick Yacht-like melodies.

‘Lords’ is almost mind-blowing in it’s complex layers of basses and leads. Twisting basslines and intricate melodies dodge and weave in and out of each other, cut-up and infused with the strongest medical grade Funk around. Keeping his trademark retro feel, the track is loaded with ‘80’s sounds’ Adeyhawke give ‘Lords’ a Disco injection that commands the listener to move. You just can’t help it.

Perseus’ Love In Zanzibar’

Perseus

This weekend French Express main man Perseus dropped another new free tune, and like ‘Seychelles’, it doesn’t disappoint.

The Mary J. Blige sampling ‘Love In Zanzibar’ is exotic Disco at it’s finest and although the vocal snippet dominates the track, it’s the synth bassline that is the real draw here. It plays out a robotic Funky groove which provides the whole route for the rest of the track to be smooth and soulful over. File this under ‘perfect tunes for lazy summer days’.

Bastian’s Happy Flight’s ‘EOP01’

Bastian's Happy Flight

One of our favourite labels, the awesome Mullet Records is celebrating it’s 50th release, Bastian’s Happy Flight’s ‘EP01’ with a free download to promote the amazing reMix package it has in store.

‘EP01, the début EP from this Australian five piece is crammed full with eight tracks. Four Originals and four reMixes, all blissed out funky ElectroPop with a Disco twist. The lead track, ‘It’s OK’, is pure summer anthem material. A slick Indie-Electro backing for some seriously lush Dreamwave synths with rousing vocals and building layers of sound giving the tune an eipc quality. Of remaining the original tracks our favourite is ‘In My Mind’, a laid back slice of Disco laden soulful ElectroPop with synth bass and piano working together to create a sunrise vibe. The signature of the original tracks are funky electronic and powerful, emotive vocals, which proved an excellent jump off point for the reMixes. Amongst which are Dublin Aunts deep ‘90’s House take on ‘It’s OK’, with it’s hammering House piano, which managers to inject a little Disco into it’s retro club sound and Mullet head honcho Casio Social Club’s ‘Heavy Disco Edit’, which does exactly what it says on the tin. expect big bouncy synth bass and wicked Disco licks.

Stereowave

Stereowave

Stereowave are a duo separated by an entire continent. One in LA one in NYC who, thanks to technology, were able to pass tracks back and forth and put together a pretty special EP.

The only downside I can see to this situation is, on listening to Stereowave’s self-titled début EP, you come to realise that this is music meant to be played live. It’s big, powerful ElectroPop infused with a Disco funk and, and here’s where they differentiate themselves from the pack, an anthemic, almost Rocky structure.  It’s actually pretty hard to pinpoint exactly where Stereowave sit musically, there’s so much going on in terms of styles and influences. Once minute they will sound like big Scandinavian stadium SynthPop, the next they will drop some Disco strings or some Jazzy electric piano. It’s a ballsy EP, with a raw quality to it, amongst the soulful vocals and groove sit dynamic buzzsaw synths and EBM beats. So you see, it’s like Funky EBM, or aggressive Disco, or soulful Electro, or just PowerPop that draws it’s DNA from all over the electronic spectrum. Whatever it is, I bet it’s awesome live.

Nickee B

Nickee B

Smooth sounds now from French SynthWave producer Nickee B and ‘In The Heat Of The Night’.

‘In The Heat Of The Night’ plays out like deep late night Italo. With a mid-tempo groove that allows it’s lead lines to evolve with out being rushed, Nickee B takes his time and lays on layers of melody and sweet solo playing creating something quite magical. For those chilled nights in the city.
