Flight Facilities’ ‘Clair De Lune’

Aussie DiscoPop duo Flight Facilities really do take their time over their releases, and this is a good thing. Unlike many of their contemporaries who are happy to drop release after release, these guys put stuff out when they are good and ready, when things are perfect for them. So here’s their new single, Clair De Lune, featuring Brooklyn based singer Christine Hoberg on vocals, and you can tell they certainly took their time on it.

A departure from their usual vintage sampling Disco, Clair De Lune is a rich slice of Folktronica. A beautiful soundscape that clocks in at just under eight minutes. The track balances an ominous, enigmatic backing, thick with pulsating synths with playful acoustic guitar and Christine Hoberg’s introspective vocal. Not exactly what you were expecting from Flight Facilities? Maybe not, but definitely a direction we;’d like to see them exploring more.

Cinnamon Chasers’ ‘Dreams & Machines’ album

To those in the know, those who really follow Dreamwave, or Nu-Disco, or SynthWave, or whatever we are calling it this month, London’s Cinnamon Chasers has long been a name associated with some of the best synth music around. After he released his amazing début A Million Miles From Home in 2009 he came to most people attention with the massive Luv Deluxe (alongside a slick video from Francis Pollara who went on to direct Russ Chimes’ Midnight Club trilogy). Luv Deluxe was huge, and set the stage for Cinnamon Chasers second album, Science, which cemented Russ Davies reputation for emotional and beautiful synth music with all the groove of Nu-Disco and all the emotional resonance of Jean Michel-Jarre or Vangelis.

So here we are as Cinnamon Chasers is gearing up for the release of his third full length record later this month. Dreams & Machines its the logical next step for CC, it’s got that spacey, cosmic Disco feel alongside the blissful Balearic keys that so encapsulate Cinnamon Chasers sound, but here there’s an underlying current of early 90s House, a warehouse Rave feeling that pushed Davies’ music one step further. The album kicks off with the title track (which we heard a couple of months ago), and Dreams & Machines sums it, and the whole release, up nicely. The meeting of pounding Disco beats and hazy synths & vocoded vocals leys the groundwork for the rest of the record. As we go into Watch The World Burn we start to pick up on some of those House influences with a stabbing organ line set against the warping galactic synths. Throughout the album the tracks maintain that perfect balance of infectious dancefloor grooves and transcendent smokey synths. highlights, for us, have to include the 21st century BladeRunner Italo-Electro of Hyperwaves, Flash Gun’s introspective Vocoder-Pop and Retrocop, which consummately appeals to our love of Italo and B-Boy Electro, it’s an instant Boogie classic with a Piano House twist. Dreams & Machines is yet another almost flawless release from Cinnamon Chasers, the textbook album for lovers of either retro Disco music or synthesizer tunes in general. Not many capture the emotionality of electronic music without sacrificing and of it;s dancefloor dive, but Cinnamon Chasers has done it again.

Goldroom reMixed by Final DJs

LA smoothmeister Goldroom’s single before his last single, the Chella featuring Fifteen, was a reMixers dream. Chella’s nostalgic, passionate vocal is like a gift to a talented producer. So, unaspiringly the track has been reMixed by everyone under the sun. Is there room for one more? Well, there is if it is Germany’s Final DJs taking you on a slow-mo SynthWave oddessy. Eight minutes of synth bliss to follow.

Yes, we said eight minutes! Final DJs reMix is a epic tune that reins in the tempo compared to their usual output allowing the song to breathe. Pinned on an head nodding digital slap bassline, the track takes it’s great length to evolve throughout. Starting off with a relaxed beach vibe, Final DJs slowly add more and more elements associated with their traditional SynthWave tunes, playing off and around that Tropical Disco vibe to create something greater than the sum of tis parts. Just let yourself sink into the groove.

Chordashian reMixes Touch Tone

We knew it was only a matter of time before we started to hear some reMixes of Dreamwave Original Gangster Touch Tone awesome Make Believe. Make Believe is Touch Tone’s second single under this new moniker and both his track have been in demand for reMixers, once you’ve heard his big, anthemic, DiscoPop you’ll understand why. So, stepping up this time is a duo who have been around for a while, but recently joined the Binary fold, Chordashian.

The Brooklyn duo whip up a nice mix of beach Disco and piano House for their taken on the tune. Alex from LexiconDon’s vocals sound comfortable amidst the stuttering snares and late night House vibe. Chordashian have managed to deliver a reMix that is both extremely dancefloor friendly, but quite musically interesting too, and retaining all the the originals soul.

Mickey & Billie’s ‘Weekend’

Following on from his hit of last year, the Monarchy featuring Love For Sale, Belgian House meister Mickey has just dropped his new single. Featuring Sylvie ‘Billie’ Kreusch on vocals the new track, Weekend is a rework of Dutch band Earth & Fire’s 1979 classic.

Released yesterday on Smile Recordings, the single is one of a new generation of House Pop track that have been building over the last two or three years. Owing a massive nod to both late 80s Chicago House and early 90s Pop House the track rocks a slick, deep sound which when added to the quirky Disco vocal makes for an infectious four minutes. There’s even a little Tropical vibe in there too. reMixes on the single come from the surprise return of Little Loud, who was killing it with reMixes in 2010 who shows his Electro roots but pulls back the tempo, injecting the track with an gritty electronic Dub flavour that full of twisting synthetic emotion. The rest of the EP hold a pretty ecclectic, if a little uninspired dance reMix from Hot Creations’ Funky Fat and the dreamy instrumental of the track. We weren’t expecting new material from Mickey, so this crept up on us a little, but it;s a solid tune that show the man hasn’t been spending his time away idly

French SynthWave master Tommy is back in business. What has he been putting his talents to since the release of his Outer Space Adventurer album of earlier this year? Well if his new tune is anything to go by, some seriously atmospheric post-Italo BladeRunner beats.

Discover starts of in the best Vangelis tradition. Rich, evolving, synth stings and futuristic tones move and build into the track proper, uneasily giving way to a emotive arpeggio and a vintage Electro beat. From then on in, Discover, his all the right Sci-Fi Italo beats. Silky smooth synth sounds, warm rhythms, ringing lead lines. It’s all totally evolving, enthralling, electronic music. Tommy at his best.

Today sees the release of Ride The Universe’s ‘A Little Better’ on Juno. I can’t tell you how proud we are to be releasing this package, it’s already getting shit-loads of play and even now, after hearing it a million times, it still leaves us grinning from ear to ear.

Chad Valley’s ‘Young Hunger’

Chad Valley‘s forthcoming début full length record is a departure, or more an evolution, from his previous offerings. The Oxford based producer’s music is at the same time genre-less, and strictly Pop. We usually hate the term ‘genre-less’, we sincerely believe in a good old fashioned pigeonholing and hate the pretension of artists believing they are above that. But it might actually be true in Chad Valley’s case and the new album, Young Hunger, shakes off many of the tropes of his Chillwave roots whilst managing to retain his music’s unique character.

So Young Hunger ends up being some kind of crazy posy-Chillwave, slick R&B Pop with a raw, garage style ElectroPop or Indie-Electro covering. Last years Equatorial Ultravox EP was a dreamlike, Balearically chilled affair, and Youth Hunger builds on that but brings the vocals to the forefront more, making them feel more like traditional Pop songs, albeit ones heard in a dream. The albums opener, the Twin Shadow featuring I Owe You This perfectly exemplifies this, hazy synths and toy town drums should be strange bedfellows with R&B Pop, but it works so well. Twin Shadow isn’t the only guest appearance on the album, TEED, Glasser and Active Child, amongst others, all put in a appearance on the eleven tracks. The previously heard, Tell All Your Friends is one of the albums standouts, a slick retro Pop tune with a catchy as hell chorus that shows just how much Chad Valley’s music has matured. Elsewhere on the album you can hear snatches of LA Funk in the likes of Fall 4 U, the pure 80s soul of Evening Surrender, and the places where the album picks up into proper vintage SynthPop, such as My Girl or the albums title track, both of which wouldn’t seem out of place on the soundtrack to a John Hughes movies. Young Hunger really does exist outside of pigeonholes, and whist that annoys us, it also makes it one of the best albums of the year, and one that can be recommended to fans of ElectroPop, R&B, Pop, Retro Music, Chillwave…y’know, whatever.
