Goin’ Old School (with Kid Machine!): Space – Magic Fly

This week we are tuning over the Goin’ Old School reins to Manchester’s Italo/SynthWave guru Kid Machine:

Space – Magic Fly from 1977 "A record that initially really inspired me to to go retro with my projects. BEFORE Daft Punk, this guy Didier Marouni was dressing up like a robot and making amazing ‘ahead of it’s time’ music in 1977. Look out for the random dancing girl and amazing drum playing action.

Mitzi’s cover of Voyage Voyage

Mitzi

Australian Indie-Electro crew Mitzi recently covered Zig Zag’s classic ‘Voyage Voyage’ as part of Future Classic’s collaboration with Le Coq Sportif Australia.

The label and the sports brand are releasing a series of covers of much loved tunes by Australian artists and ‘voyage Voyage’ is the cream of the crop so far. Keeping the Disco groove but injecting that particular upbeat Aussie ElectroPop sound sees the makings of a summer anthem. it’s got the nostalgia factor of the original and all the trappings of the kind of tunes that fill Indie club dancefloors worldwide.

Ronika’s ‘Clock’

ronika

The Madonna Of The Midlands™, Ronika, has just premiered a brand new slab of super-retro DiscoPop Boogie.

Collaborating once again with Charles Washington (of ‘Paper, Scissors And Stone’ fame), Ronika has produced a another bouncing bassed peice of soulful ElectroPop. ‘Clock’ stands out from Ronika’s body of work, so far, by having a slightly icy edge to it. Musically the track, on first listen, appears to be an emotive four minutes of ElectroBoogie with a bit of an early ‘90’s House influence, but repeated listens reveal undercurrents of the Cybotron edge of Old School Electro and Mid-‘80’s synth Dub that lend the tiniest hint of cold, futuristic roboticness. Of course, this is tempered by Ronika and Mr. Washington, who’s passionate duet warms the track up right nice! This, though, is Ronika’s greatest asset, her ability to throw all these elements into her Ronika brand melting pot and make the result sound so smooth and effortless.

Ronika’s latest single ‘Only Only’/’In The City’ is out now and comes highly recommended.

Justin Faust reMixes Moullinex

Moullinex

Here we have Justin Faust’s contribution to Moullinex’s forthcoming ‘Modular Jam’ reMix EP.

Mr. Faust adds some razor sharp synths with an almost Acid burbling to his crisp, clean Disco. Everything about this mix is so bright, like a shining white future built upon layers and layers of  head nodding riffs, immaculately produced. With an infectious hook and a mix that lets every element shine through, Faust has knocked out another winner here.

M83 reMixed by Who Killed JR?

m83

A brief glance at SoundCloud will reveal that the world is flooded with shitty reMixes of M83’s ‘Midnight City’ that’s don’t really do anything and are just uninspired ‘producers’ trying to latch onto the latest buzz track. …Who Killed JR?, however, totally nail it!

The South African producer adds just the right amount of dancefloor energy into the tune, keeping enough of the original to make it recognisable but cutting and pasting it in interesting ways and adding his own layer of melody, finding the prefect balance between the original and making it his own. This mix would go down a storm at peak time, with the instantly identifiable riff of the original and a whole new level of groove.

Nite Jewel’s ‘One Second Of Love’

Nite Jewel

Nite Jewel had just dropped the first taste of what to expect from her forthcoming new album.

The album is set to drop March 2012, but right now we can check out the title track ‘One Second Of Love’. It just the kind of blurry collision between LA Nu-Funk and Downtempo ElectroPop that’s we’d expect from Nite Jewel. Featuring emotionally injected synths and a deep groove for Ramona Gonzalez’s catchy, but slightly distant vocals to ride over. Ramona’s stripped down, minimal take on DiscoPop has always made her stand out for the pack, and this new album should be something to look forward to.

The Good Natured reMixed by Adrian Lux

goodnatured2

Almost as a companion peice to Adrian Lux’s ‘Alive’ featuring The Good Natured, here he is reMixing The Good Natured’s new single ‘Video Voyeur’.

It’s got all the elements we loved about ‘Alive’, Sarah’s unique vocals seeming to add a new dimension to Lux’s Electro-House sounds, which would normally come across full of cheese. Here he get’s even more full-on Ibiza, and whilst not quite ad good as their previous collaboration, Lux’s rEMix of ‘Video Voyeur’ is still a big, confusing but wonderful, peak time tune.
