If we’re completely honest, we found the new single from Belgian mixtaper The Magician a little disappointing. That seemed to be an general reaction to the tune, When The Night Is Over. The track feat Newtimers was a tad generic what-cool-right-now House. Have no fear though, like some kind of musical first responder, Clancy is here to save the day with this reMix that features on the official single package.
Clancy’s reMix has the perfect hypnotic groove. Layering the track with brooding, pulsating synths he delivers a Deep House concoction that reaches into your core and compels you to move. Like a robot uprising, the reMix is electronically ominous but never lets it’s imposing Sci-Fi synths overshadow it’s irresistible boogie. Definitely one DJs should have in their crates, for peak time, when you’ve got them in the palm of your hand, this will keep them there.

The next offering from Yuksek’s Partyfine label was released this week. It’s the pretty eagerly awaited new single, and third collaboration, from Peter & The Magician. The duo, which of course consists of talented Electro producer Yuksek and mixtape creator The Magician, have previously given us Twist and Memory, both amazing tunes, how does On My Brain stack up?
Featuring the vocals of Sophie Galpin, the voice of Figure Of 8’s No One Cries For Me, On My Brain sees Yuksek adding a little 90s House vibe to his sound. Still instantly recognisable as Yuksek, especially in the tracks piercing leads, there’s an added warehouse vibe in the bass section and rave drones. Along with Galpin’s resonant vocals, that really makes the track what it is, it’s all neatly tied together by Yuksek’s not-inconsiderable production skills as he takes these disparate elements and creates a cohesive, and funky, whole. This one’s going to fill dancefloors.

Peter & The Magician – Exclusive Mix = Yuksek and ex-Aeroplane DJ The Magician are gearing up to drop their third collaboration in the form of the On My Brain EP, we’ve heard the release and can confirm it’s pretty special, but you can hear snippets of it in this exclusive mix they’ve done to celebrate the forthcoming release. And in a shocking turn of events, The Magician has, for once, graciously decided to respect the artists he uses in his mixtapes by providing a tracklist this time!

The Magician – Magic Tape Twenty-Four = Frankly we could write anything here and a new Magic Tape would still be something to be excited about. But The Magician has out done himself this time with a totally Tropical mixtape as Stephen leads us into the summer.
Yuksek and The Magician are back for their second original outing as Peter & The Magician. Their first ‘Twist’, kinda’ took the Nu-Disco scene by storm, well you’d expect no less from these two Disco heavyweights collaborating. Prepare for some of the best analog Funk you will hear all year.
‘Memory’ is everything we’d expect from these two. The thing I like about Peter & The Magician tracks is that you can really hear both musicians influences. You have the big Yuksek’s power chords and anthemic vocals and the melodic funk and slight Tropical vibe of The Magician, all up in the mix. This track, slightly laid back as it is, is the perfect combination of beach party and cosmic Disco, Oh! It’s like a party on a beach on another world! That’s the one! If you like Yuksek, and you like The Magician, you’ll be all over this. The whole EP is top quality, there’s a ‘Club Mix’ that gives the impression That The Magician took over a little bit as it veers more into his bouncy analog Disco territory, Le Crayon drops a traditional Nu-Disco jam, NSFW turn up the Tropical and Poindexter get old school funky. There also may be one more reMix, shhhhh.
So, we’ve been fans of RAC reMix work for a few years now, they generally tend to release high quality tunes, and long time readers will know we’ve been supporting Chris Glover A.K.A. Penguin Prison since day one, so these idea of these two entities making a tune together was pretty exciting stuff. The end result, ‘Hollywood’, was surprisingly, gangly guitar laden, Indie. We were kinda’ disappointed, it was actually a really good song, but far too guitary to grace these pages. Enter The Magician to make things all better.
The Magician strips things back al little with this mix. He makes the decision, we think the correct decision, to let the highly melodic vocal carry the track musically. Which is a good move, to many melodies would have cluttered the track and keeping things to a simply riff allows the track room to breathe. Basically, we’ve been dying to hear this track with a dance beat and synths, The Magician has delivered.
The Magician – Magic Tape Twenty-Three = i was starting to get withdrawal symptoms, but the The Magician hit me up with a new ‘Magic Tape’ fix. It;s that time of the month to play guess the storming Disco & House tracklist, I’m please to hear some Final DJs (Justin Faust mix) in there.
The Magician – Magic Tape Twenty-Two = ‘Magic Tape’ time of the month comes around so fast! What have we got in here then. Some nice Tropical Disco, some nice ‘90’s vibe. Is that the new Yuksek reMix I hear? Chris Malinchak? Some TEED? Let the guessing games begin.
The Magician – Magic Tape Twenty-One = Another month, another Magic Tape for you to obsess over the tracklist of. Whatever the line-up this is one kickin’ hour of ElectroPop, deep Nu-Disco and House with some nice surprises in there. We The Magician never stops!
Next month sees French ElectroPop genius Sébastien Tellier finally release his long awaited (well, around here definitely) new single ‘Cochon Ville’, after the brief welcome back of ‘Pépito Bleu’ it’s a funk return to form that leaves us excited for his forthcoming album, ‘My God Is Blue’.
Produced by Ed Banger’s Mr. Flash, the track is smooth slice of French DiscoPop that’s backed by some awesome reMixes. The Magician us front and centre with a track that harkens back to the days of Pet Shop Boys at the Disco. Shifting the mood of the tune into one of late night ‘80’s dancefloors The Magician takes you on a synthesized journey through rain soaked back alleys and seedy bars. Hey Champ! take on the track is pure ‘80’s ElectroPop Funk with hints of Axel F while Dimitri From Paris’ Acid soaked Disco is a strange, but pleasing collision between burbling 303’s and ‘70’s Moroder.
