reMix competition ultra roundup part two: Lifelike & Popular Computer

lifelike

So, here we are with the second instalment of our reMix cometition roundup, where we sift through the shit to find the gold so you don’t have to. The other big reMix competition running right now is  Lifelike & Popular Computer current single. The robotic dance anthem ‘Getting High’. Let;’s take a look at who’s actually delivered a decent reMix, rather than phoning it in just to reMix a Lifelike track, shall we?

Of course Germany’s Final DJs have a track. You can’t have a reMix competition with a Final DJs entry. But you have to admit they are literally top of their game. Nine times out of ten they blow all the competition away and with their take on Lifelike & Popular Computers tune they are once again in the top tier if entries. Rocking that vocoded vocal for all it’s worth and produce a future dance track that combines the driving power of the original with Final DJs melodic leads and atmospheric pads. Collins’ ‘Children Of The Sky’ reMix  mixes up a bit of Italo with a bit of Cosmic Disco to great effect and ends up sounding a bit like the theme tune to a late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s BBC children’s Sci-Fi’ series reworked for the dancefloor. Killer bassline! Tommy turns in a deep robotic bassline to go with the vocal which he layers with some inspiring pads and a shuffling beat. A real ‘80’s sounding SynthWave treat. Russian producer Lamet’s entry brings a rad ‘80’s Funk bassline to the track and works that through a retro SynthWave tune with hints of Jan Hammer.

Lifelike & Popular Computer

Lifelike

Hold tight for some seriously French French Touch and one of the scenes pioneers Lifelike teams up with one of our favourite producers Popular Computer to drop a massive slab of dancefloor goodness. Like an invasion of French funky robots the just released new track, ‘Getting High’ hot you with a militaristic groove tempered with smooth synths.

The relentless marching of the staccato bassline and vocoded chants is like in irresistible call to dance. A mantra of synths and robots that wraps you up in it’s hypnotic groove. ON top of this you can head Popular Computer’s input in the bright, complex melodies, like a musical machine with a hundred moving parts. It’s actually really interesting to hear the meeting of these two producers distinct styles, a meeting that works really well, Lifelike knows his groove and riffs like no-other, and PC can layer thick retro synths and intricate lead lines. A good mix, check it out:

Voltaire Twins

Australian SynthPop duo Voltaire Twins are giving away their new single ‘Animalia’ including the reMix package, all for the price of a Facebook ‘like’.

This brother and sister from Perth add their unique take on Indie and SynthPop to the ever growing, ever impressive Australian ElectroPop pool, having already grabbed out attention on the Kitsuné X Ponystep album a while back, the ‘Animalia’ single sees them better than ever. It’s atmospheric and moody, in a 4AD kinda’ way, but amazingly catchy too, they are definitely a welcome fresh voice in Electro. The single reMix package includes tracks from Purple Sneakers DJs, Voltaire Twins themselves and the near flawless Lifelike. The French Touch genius bounces things up with a wicked synth bassline but restrains himself so things never overpower the song.

Chromeo & Lifelike; together again

chromeo

Lifelike’s reMix of Chromeo’s ‘Needy Girl’ was one of the musical highlights of 2008, now the meeting of minds is happening once more with Lifelike’s new reMix of Chromeo’s forthcoming ‘when The Night Falls’ single.

Featuring Solange of the Knowles clan, ‘When The Night Falls’ will be the last single from Chromeo’s amazing ‘Business Casual’ album. Lifelike add a nice sheen of Frenchness to the track with his trademark digital bass and a solid understanding of the Disco dancefloor. It’s the little touches, stabs and sound effects that really make this reMix a bit rad, keeping things energetic and bombastic.

Chromeo’s ‘When The Night Falls’ single is due to drop 25th July.

James Varnish (+ Lifelike & Murder One)

James Varnish is a newcomer to this thing we call ElectroPop. the Australian has just released his first single, ‘Compare’.

It’s a strong début, a little rough round the edges but shows a lot of promise. It’s sometimes hard to tell with premier singles, especially full of reMixes, but when Mr. Varnish finds his own voice, his own sound, he could defiantly be a player in the Electro game. He’s got quite a 90’s vocal style with a nice 80’s flair to the music, produced by fellow Melbourne resident Murder One, that combines to form a classic SynthPop sound. All-in-all is a pretty powerful first offering. Even more so is the reMix by Lifelike which is fairly low-down-dirty for a Lifelike reMix with a grungy groove and cut-up vocals.

Bullmeister (+ Lifelike & Gooseflesh)

Berlin’s Bullmeister are an Indie-ElectroPop trio, who list Phoenix, Goose and Fenech-Soler amongst their influences and seem to put on a crazy live show.

Taking the best of French -House and cramming into some noisy ElectroPop on their new single ‘Baby’ Bullmeister have created a powerhouse Pop jam with all the right riffs and breakdowns. Roping in Nu-Disco genius Lifelike and Electroheads Gooseflesh for the reMixes was an awesome idea. Lifelike turns in a chilled Disco tune with some rad massive synths in and his usual flying arpeggios while Gooseflesh get Ravey with the B-side, ‘It’s Okay’.

New Pony Pony Run Run single!

PonyPonyRunRun02

Amazing French Indie-ElectroPopsters Pony Pony Run Run return next month with a long awaited new single ‘Waling On A Line’. It’s a, frankly, brilliant slice of Indie-Electro that deserves all kinds of attention this summer.

There are loads of reMixes lined up for the reMix package, the stand out really has to be Lifelike’s stellar return to form with his summertime part reMix, so smooth the synths seem to melt together, all 7m50s of it is brilliant. For darker take on the tune check out French Fries’ Dubstep workout with downpitched vocals while Blatta & Inesha deliver a straight up wonky banger.

La Roux Vs. Lifelike

LaRoux4

Is there time for just one more reMix of ‘In For The Kill’ before La Roux’s next single, ‘Bulletproof’ is released?

Of course there is!

Saving the best ‘til last comes Lifelike. His really 80’s SynthPop, with a dance beat, take on the track has it vying against Heartbreak’s reMix for the position of my favourite version.
