Say Yes Dog

Dutch-based ElectroPop trio Say Yes Dog appear to be on a mission to get well and truly stuck in our heads. Permanently. Their post-Hot Chip Quirk-Pop is instantly likable and can be found on their recently released début EP, A Friend, from which we have two track right here. At times the tend to veer a little to far into the Chip’s established territory, in almost a homage style, but mostly it’s gets away with it due to an abundance of fun.

The EP’s title track, A Friend, gets particularly Chippy toward the end, but matins it’s own identity with it’s plinky-plonky snyths and delicious dancefloor beats. It’s mixture of melancholic croon and chirpy melodies actually working really well. Light, and funky, and ultimately feel-good, A Friend’s brand of SynthPop is just hard not to like. Around My Neck is similar in vein, albeit slightly more introspective. Electric piano led, Around My Neck warms things up with some buzzing synths and excitable rhythms, which seems to temper the suspiciously gloomy subject matter. We expect Say Yes Dog will be one of those bands that generates a lot of hype in the coming months, they’ve just got that vibe about them.

[Audio] Flight Facilities And Micky Green’s ‘Stand Still’

Flight Facilities

Eh-up, here’s the new one from Australian Indie-Disco aviators Flight Facilities. Flight Facilities are whatever the opposite of prolific is, and we always tend to forget about them when they haven’t just released something, but the scarceness means a new single from these guys is always something to be savoured. So let’s savour away.

Stand Still features Parisian-based-Australian singer Micky Green, and those of you expecting some dude named Michael will be disappointed, Micky is a lady, and a lady you may remember from her single In Between from earlier this year. Trudging ever deeper into the waters of cue Electro-Indie, Flight Facilities deliver an astoundingly infectious slice of vintage synthed IndiePop right here. Nary a Disco lick in sight. Green sound pitch perfect, with her sweet, introverted vocals meshing with the tracks sparse keys and rumbling, bouncy bassline. There’s a whistling hook to, ‘cos we’re only bugging.

♫ Flight Facilities (Feat. Micky Green) – Stand Still

Flight Facilities Stand Still is released 25th November with the full reMix EP coming 9th December with work from Com Truise, Wave Racer and Mario Basanov.

[Download] We Draw A’s ‘Whirls’ EP

We Draw A

The latest release from Kamp!’s Polish ElectroPop label Brennnessel comes in the form of a majestic, and free, EP from We Draw A. We Draw A is a Polish artist, who serves up a nice line in moody, emotional and deep ElectroPop with some pretty ecclectic instrumentation. This is his second EP. His début from earlier this year, Glimpse, was also free.

The Whirls EP hold four tracks of spacious, smokey ElectroPop. The EP opens with Silent Tide, an enigmatic affair that begins layering haunting tones, a electro-tribal lament, before launching into ridiculously catchy beats and basslines for it’s finale minute. Close is a shuffling tune in a classic SynthPop mould, loaded with thick synth bass and  heartfelt vocals, followed by Waking Hour which eases you in with a metallic intro ahead of it becoming a steady and passionate ElectroPop number with Industrial overtones playing off Indie vocals. Overtone which continue into the noisy and grimy Harm, where the falsetto voice hovers above distorted beats and squealing synths. It;s a full and rich EP, definitely something you should be investigating.

[Audio] Teeel’s ‘Temple Of The Sun’

Teeel

Check out this space age slice of awesomeness. Temple Of The Sun is the latest tune from New Jersey based SynthWaver Teeel and is his contribution to new compilation album Violent Success Presents: Retro Future. Alongside the likes of Betamaxx and Arc Neon, Teeel delivers something a little different with this one, taking in a few more, wider, influences.

Mixing up a little SynthWave, a little Indie, a little ElectroPop and even a little Tropical into one vintage synth laden beats, Teeel crafts a breezy, chill, mood with Temple Of The Sun. Layers of buzzing and pulsating synths intertwine with each other, laying down robotic melodies. This is tempered with some distant, hazy vocals and some light, New Order-esque string instrumentation. The result is a slick, nostalgic, four minutes of bliss.

[Audio] Jensen Sportag’s ‘Stealth Of Days’

Last week, Nashville chili-peppers Jensen Sportag released their long awaited second album, Stealth Of Days. It seems to be being referred to as their début, we’re not quite sure where that leaves their 2006 untitled full lengther on Midisport, maybe that was just a ‘collection of works’ or something? Anyhoo, despite having been listening to our promo copy of Stealth Of Days a hell of a lot over the past couple of months we dropped the ball and neglected to post a review in timely fashion. Real life stuff weighed heavy on our shoulders last week. Stupid real life stuff, always getting in the way of writing words on the internet. So without further ado, better late than never, let’s stick our heads in the chiller-cabinet and see what’s occurring.

At the time of writings, it’s a Sunday, and it’s Autumn. We could sum up Stealth Of Days by saying it’s a very Autumn Sunday album. It warms you when it’s cold outside, it’s relaxing without being dull, it’s intelligent and meticulously crafted and loaded with grooves to carry you away and spark your imagination, like so much of Jensen Sportags material. From that first CD, through the Sergio and Jackie EPs, to their début for Cascine, the Pure Wet EP, Austin and Elvis have always delivered something to get excited about. Drawing from R&B, Chillwave, Indie, SynthPop, Avant-Garde and a healthy dose of Yacht Rock, these guys have consistently unleashed music that is both funky and chilled, like a disco under the duvet. Very few artists can make music so complex so damn smooth.

The record kicks off with Rain Code, a hazy, ethereal, R&B tune that is a brave choice for album opener, but once you slip into it’s experimental waters it makes perfect sense, setting up stealth Of Day’s mood. Were this a soundtrack to a movie, this initial piece would convey in detail the world you were entering. The shuffling beats make their first appearance of Six Senses, alongside rounded LA Funk bass and light Disco licks that weaves though their haunting and abstract Soul. Stealth Of Days seems to get increasingly more coherent as it plays, the laid back  beach groove of Light Through Lace leading to the the cavernous alt R&B of Falling Doves still keep the ghostly ambience going but upon hitting After Gardens the album starts to focus more. After Gardens is a silky slice of soulful Pop that precedes one of the albums highlights, Hidden, Hunted, a rolling and infectious slow jam were dreamlike vocals, ticking rhythms and reverb washed synths all hit just the right spot. Bellz and Under The Rose are up next, both good choices for advance preview tracks, both thick with supernatural grooves, resurrected 80s hooks and an otherworldly dancefloor appeal. Blue Shade works a smokey, night time, urban feel while Blood Hourglass closes the album in epic style with five minutes of piano led power jamz fed though a vintage radio. Awash with nostalgia, you get a sense of the genuine passion for what they are doing from Jensen Sportag on Stealth Of Days. Everything is so delicate and intricate and hones to perfection, the album really feels like a labour of love.

[Download] Computer Magic’s ‘Extra Stuff’ EP

Computer Magic

Extra Stuff. That’s what you want. Who doesn’t want extra stuff? And That’s just what Brooklyn’s finest synthstronaut, Danielle ‘Danz’ Johnson, better know as Computer Magic, is giving us. Including her recently released tune, All I Ever Wanted,  and six other amazing tracks, Dani is giving away the whole Extra Stuff EP away for free right up until it goes on sale officially this week. But go and buy it anyway, it very much deserves some of your hard earned. The EP is made up of Computer Magic tunes that have found themselves online, some tracks released only in Japan and three brand new songs, that’s the kind of Extra Stuff we’re into.

The EPs opener, Time And Reason, is short but worth the admission price alone. A soaring introduction to the EP which sees Dani’s vocals sounding larger than ever set amongst rolling arpeggios. It Makes No Difference is a bong fuelled Cosmic jam, wailing vocals and buzzing synths trying to contain the chaos of the song. There’s a slight Post-Punk vibe to I’m The Pro, a strong New York feel too, all pulsating vintage synths and hollered voice giving off an intense DIY energy. Returning to the retro SynthPop arena for Time To Decide, showing off her 80s British Pop influences and Summer Vacation’s Parisian ElectroPop vibe Computer Magic settles into a sweet alt Pop groove for the EP’s middle section. Dani’s curiously heartfelt vocals are quite inviting, bobbing along with the warm classic electronic sounds. The EP closes on the stripped back and cute Living For A Second Day and the Synth ‘N’ Roll of the previously featured All I Ever Wanted. If you’re into the DIY synth thing, or New York SynthPop, or just some really enjoyable ElectroPop tunes, then check out this EP.

[Audio] Fred Falke reMixes Pompeya’s ’90’

Pompeya

Remember 2008/2009 when it felt like French Touch Pop legend Fred Falke had a hand in everything you listened to? Seems like he;s been pretty quiet of late, but when he does drop a new track it just reminds us how how much we miss his tunes. Case in point; this new reMix of Russian Pop Funk outfit Pompeya’s new song 90.

This reMix of 90 is a spacious affair, but we’d expect no less from a producer of Falke’s experience. There’s tons going on, but it all sits nicely together without sounding cramped. The bright , ringing, synths don;t clash with the infectious Disco licks. The drums don;t jostle for room with the driving bassline. Peppered with vocoding and a majestic piano hook, this reMix is like a Disco wonderland, slightly mysterious but totally compelling.

[Audio] Miami Horror’s ‘Colours In The Sky’

Miami-Horror

So, Aussie ElectroPoppers Miami Horror’s new single, Real Slow has been getting quite the hammering at electronic rumors HQ recently. If you’re so inclined to pick up the track on 7” from Neon Gold, you’ll find that it’s a double A-side with this little gem, Colours In The Sky (also out as a digital single this week) which features Cleopold, whoever or whatever that is, it appears to have zero internet presence, so it might be a Victorian entertainer.

Colours In The Sky is exactly four minutes if synthesizer felicity. An almost Chillwavey haze of reverb laden keys and raw piano hooks. It’s a collection of avant-garde noises re configured into a summery Pop song. Intelligent and interesting, Colours In The Sky, alongside Real Slow, has us very much looking forward to hearing their forthcoming sophomore album. Lush synths, hazy vocals, distant melodies and a healthy does of nostalgia. What more could we ask for, well, better weather would be nice, but we guess Miami Horror can’t do everything.

[Audio] Metronomy’s ‘I’m Aquarius’

metronomy

I’m Aquarius is the first single from Devon Indie-ElectroPop darlings Metronomy’s recently announced new album Love Letters. The track was premièred originally through astronomy app The Night Sky, on Android and iOS, earlier this month when users point their mobile devices tower the constellation of Aquarius. Which is a pretty slick way to première your track if you ask us.

Now on general release, I’m Aquarius carries you along on a wave of fresh vintage drum machines and classy keys. More introspective than the Metronomy we are used to, here we find them playing with darker sounds and a more spacious production. It’s not all doom and gloom though, the song itself is quite playful and optimistic, for a breakup track. A 60s psychedelic tinged ElectroPop croon that bodes well for the rest of the album.
