[Video] Punks Jump Up’s ‘Fairlight’ video

Punks Jump Up Fairlight

Here is the video for London duo Punks Jump Up’s new tune Fairlight, which we featured last week as a free download. Which is good value really, seeing as how is one of the best tunes of the last few months.

The clip was put together by Neal Coghlan, and it’s an amazing, animated, space-age trip that visually plays on the tracks retro sounds.

[Audio] Monsieur Adi reMixes Britney Spears’ ‘Work Bitch’

britney spears

Is Monsieur Adi a Pop star yet? We were sure it was supposed to happen about now. We consulted the oracle and everything. Still What’s Going On? is released today, and it’s hotly tipped for chart dominance, so we’ll give it a week or so. In the meantime he’s doing official reMixes for Britney Spears. That’s a thing that happens when you’re a Pop star y’see.

You gotta’ give Britney credit for trying, she’s like a Pop Jack Russell trying to get at your cuppa; relentless. Also Toxic was awesome. Adi’s take on her latest single, the toe curling Work Bitch, applies his bombastic Electro to the track and is never once ashamed of going large. His rousing, cinematic, orchestration is present and correct, layered with big room synths and a nice line in boomy kicks. In anyone one else’s hand’s these huge riff and Britney vocals would have been pure cheese, but work in a little of that Adi 78-piece orchestra, and it all suddenly goes a bit epic.

[Audio] Kosheen’s ‘Harder They Fall’

Kosheen

Of the many many thing to be proud about the city of Bristol, near the top sits Kosheen. ElectroPop, Drum & Bass, Electro, Breakbeat, Trip-Hop chameleons, Kosheen have left a stunning back catalogue behind them over the last fifteen years with Sian, Mark and Darren consistently delivering quality, intelligent Dance music with soul. Cue their forthcoming fifth studio album, Solitude, and it’s lead single, Harder They Fall. Released at the end of November, Harder They Fall comes equipped with three storming reMixes, have a listen to the Radio Edit and one of the mixes right now.

Harder They Fall is both dark & haunting and a post-Rave, UK House floorfiller. It’s like Kosheen of old, driven by Sian’s smokey vocals, with a twist that would see them fitting in perfectly in summer 2013 clubland. Musically, the track is a selection of tough beats, thought House basslines and tough leads, all tempered by silky smooth production and morphed into a noir Pop song by Sian’s croon. Most of the reMixes come straight out of the Kosheen camp. Well, if you’ve got that many alter egos, why not?  Mark and Darren in their guise as Kosheen DJs deliver a rugged UK House track the loads itself with abrasive riffs swirling, spacious, synth growls but overall eschews a gritty sound in favour of  bringing a hypnotic tone to the track. The alter-ego that first brought Mark and Darren to our attention, that of Drum & Bass legends Decoder & Substance lend the single a distorted, bass heavy, Dubby vibe, with hints of Experimental and Industrial leanings. Their reMix draws you in with it’s relentless cloud of noise, pulsating synths and hammered purcussion. We would kinda’ say that Harder They Fall is a return to form for Kosheen, but honestly, they have never wavered from excellence. It is, however, an awesome single.

[Audio] Chvrches’ ‘Lies’ reMixed by Tourist

Chvrches

So, yeah, Glaswegian ElectroPop overlords Chvrches’ début track, Lies, is, as suspected, getting re-released with a full reMix package. The version of the track on their stunning début album, The Bones Of What You Believe, we a re-recorded version anyway, so it kinda’ makes sense. Also, it’s a strong-as-hell song that deserves wider exposure than it got first time around. So it’s all good.

the first of the reMixes to break cover comes from London producer Tourist who eases you slowly into the tune with a lush piano and vocal intro. This clean, and haunting, take on the song lasts for almost half the reMixes length, before Tourist flips the tune into a Bass heavy Deep House groover with hints of Chicago here and there. It;s compelling stuff, but you can;t help but feel like it’s not quite there. Don;t get us wrong, Tourist’s mix is full of amazing ideas and a beautiful sonic pallet, but unfortunately it never really delivers on the amazingness it promises, leaving it always just short of perfection. Still, a worthy addition to the Chvrches reMix pantheon and one we hope to be dancing to in a club soon.

[Video] Joe Goddard’s ‘Taking Over’

Joe Goddard Taking Over Official Video YouTube

The title track from Hot Chip and The 2 Bears’ Joe Goddard’s current EP, Taking Over, is now doing it;s thing in video form. This soft and sweet ElectroPop tune is the perfect introduction to the EP’s four tracks of intelligent electronic music.

Directed by Mark James delivers a suitably hazy video, with just the right amount of weirdness we’re beginning to expect from anything to do with Goddard, in this case a singing kebab.

[Download] Wolf Saga reMixes The Clash’s ‘Rock The Casbah’

the clash

We’ve actually been waiting a lifetime for someone to do a decent reMix of The Clash’s 1982 anthem Rock The Casbah. One that respects the original and feeds into it’s groove, whilst layering it in synthesizer goodness. Well Canadian producer Wolf Saga has come pretty close. In lieu of his début proper EP, which is coming soon, he’s released this reMix. A brave attempt and one which, for the most part, he pulls off with style.

Imagine, if you will, a heady combination of Piano House, ElectroPop and Electro-House all mixed up with The Clash’s Funk-Punk and a touch of Dreamwave in the breakdown Nah, we couldn’t have imagined it either. So we’re pretty glad that Wold Saga imagined it for us, because he’s done a band up job in translating Rock The Casbah from epic Punk anthem to epic Dancefloor anthem. Same rush of energy, same thrills, but with warbling synths and a floorfilling beat this time around. Grab this for your weekend.

[Download] Zimmer’s ‘Galapagos’

Zimmer

It seems like ages since Parisian Horizontal Disco innovator Zimmer released a new track. Aside from a series of excellent mixtapes, and a handful to top reMixes,, we haven’t heard a new tune since, we think, the actual Horizontal Disco EP. Mr. (Le) Crayon steps up to help out with drum duties on Galapagos, a suitably evocative title for this Tropical meets Chicago House jam.

Galapagos, delivers a nice line in pitched down vocals and chilled House groove that Zimmer has chosen to pair with Tropical purcussion and an Island lead line. The whole affair end up being bizarrely warehouse, with the Tropical lead somehow morphing into a classic Rave hook in Zimmer’s deft hands. We guess the track would work equally well by the pool or in the crowd, it’s adapted for either situation. For us though, we’re going to take the chilled route with this one.

[Audio] Grum reMixes Martin Garrix’s ‘Animals’

Martin Garrix

OK kids, pencils down and pay attention, there’s a new reMix from Mr. Grum on the scene. This time around Grum’s subject matter is young Dutch producer Martin Garrix, who in suitably Dutch producer fashion is a purveyor of all things big room, Prog Housey, Trancey, and cheese filled. Taking Garrix’s ‘hit’, Animals, Grum proceeds to make things a bit slicker, a bit more sophisticated, without loosing any of the dancefloor euphoria.

Grum loads up on big swirling synths for this one. By this time Grum has amassed enough experience with a wide variety of dancefloor styles that he can effortlessly meld them into one monster whole. Crisp lead lines, burbling basses, and the perfect build, all lead into a 303 tweaking finale that sees Grum in new Acid-Techno territories. A massive floor destroyer that we fully expect is going to get caned over the coming months.

[Audio] Data/Debt’s ‘Dead Pixel’

Data-Debt

We’ve been eager to write about this one for a couple of weeks. It’s the next release on London’s Heavy Disco label and it comes from San Francisco based producer Data/Debt (who you may remember mixing up Ali Jamieson’s Four Thirty) in collaboration with Nu-Disco producer Allen Walker on Bass. Dead Pixel is his début release, check it out.

Dead Pixel is a rolling party starter who’s gruff groove is disguised amidst a cheeky line in samples. There’s just no way you can stop your head nodding to this one. You can’t stop smiling either. Thick with broken snatches of vintage Disco records and driving bass, Dead Pixel delivers a nice winter Disco vibe, this one isn’t for poolsides, this is for sweaty backroom clubs and everlasting Funk.
