Goin’ Old School: Tricky Disco, Modern Talking & Alphaville

Goin’ Old School isn’t a trip down music memory lane, it’s a mugging in the dark alleyway of nostalgia:

1989’s Tricky Disco from Tricky Disco. Not nearly as funny now, I guess you had to be there.

From 1985, ItaloPop with Modern Talking’s You Can Win If You Want.

Alphaville’s epic original version of Forever Young from 1984.

Lenno reMixes The Knocks & Fred Falke

the-knocks-fred-falke1

Finnish producer Lenno is definitely one of our favourite producers working right now. His big room Nu-Disco sound, from a club point of view, is absolutely killer. When we heard he would be reMixing The Knocks & Fred Falke’s Geronimo, easily one of the tracks of the year, we were more than interested, and the track lived up to our expectation, being our favourite of the reMixes.

It’s up on Lenno’s SoundCloud now, so if you’re somehow one of the few stragglers who haven’t picked up the single at Beatport, this’ll convince you. Lenno brings his big sound to an already massive tune and the result is dancefloor genius. I hate comparing Lenno to Madeon, but if Madeon is fucking off to join his new Brostep friends, then Lenno is the man who’s name should be on your lips. No-one drops huge, complex Disco House like Lenno. I can’t wait to play this track out, a slice of funky euphoria.

Voyager’s new single

voyager

Voyager are one of the best outfits to come out of the recent explosion of Russian Electro. This new single, released on Kiez Beat in August is a track we heard a few months ago and have been eagerly awaiting the release since.

Edge Of The Universe is deep , cosmic ElectroPop. A track that looks to the stars with it’s mood and works a little house piano and a sweeping SynthWave tone to it’s Electro sound. the track actually has much in common with space age FuturePop such as Code 64, but with more of a musical slant, as evidenced by the soaring solos, and more of a dancefloor friendly groove. The reMixes are actually a little disappointing,  the standouts both coming from fellow Russians The Frost and Folano, who rock ChipTune Disco and Italo sounds respectively. It’s a cool single though, the attention to detail in Edge Of The Universe is impressive, with little musical flourishes and atmospheres that interlock with the track. Cosmic ElectroPop? A new thing? We hope so.

New tune from Bon Accord

bonaccord1

Bon Accord, London based producer  Michael Wright, featured on electronic rumors last year with his instrumental DreamPop EP True Delusion. He’s been a bit quiet since but this week stopped by the ol’ inbox to drop of his latest creation, more blissful electronics in the form of Pleasure.

It’s a track that lives up to it’s name, bouncy and diverting but with a warm mood of fantasy. Still working with a sound that lives at the intersection of BedroomPop and Chillwave, Bon Accord adds a slight Disco groove to his rich pallet of vintage synth sounds, letting his sparking melodies and buzzing pads fill our minds while the rhythm section moves our feet.

Saint Etienne’s ‘I’ve Got Your Music’ video

Saint Etienne crowdsourced their latest video, getting fans to show the world their favourite records to accompany the ode to Pop I’ve Got Your Music.

What sounded initially a cheap, and a bit cheesy, actually really works amazingly well, it’s interesting to see everyone’s choices. Whoduv’ thunk it?

I’ve Got Your Music is taken from Words And Music By Saint Etienne, out not.

MiGHty mOUse reMixes Hervé & Ronika

Ronika

Hervé & Ronika’s old school Rave anthem How Can I Live Without You? (Make It Right) was finally released yesterday, revealing the most eagerly awaited (as far as we were concerned) of the reMixes. From the moment we heard both the original, and that London’s Disco don MiGHty mOUse was contributing a reMix, for us, that was the one to hear.

And it lives up to expectations, easily positioning itself as the standout of the package. Driven by a deep galactic funk, MiGHty mOUse takes us, and Ronika, out beyond the solar system with some of the most cosmic Disco you’ll hear in a while. A booming robo bassline is perfectly complimented by electro toms popping and pewing like laser fire off the starboard bow. This is the kind of jam they danced to in late 70’s Sci-Fi shows, when the did dance, especially in Buck Rodgers. Like the musical equivalent of a shiny silver jumpsuit, one worn by Madonna Of The Midlands™ Ronika. Which, thinking about it, she’d probably love. Addictive space funk, get involved.

Future Unlimited’s new track

future-unlimited

Future Unlimited are a Nashville based Indie-Electro, verging in ElectroPop, with a Chillwave outlook, duo who we’ve written about a few times in these inches. Their EP, EP, released earlier this year was a masterclass in floaty retro Dreampop and now the twosome is back with a new tune, Lightweight Eyes, that further cements their reputation as purveyors of vintage emotional dance greatness.

Lightweight Eyes is probably up their with their best track to date, Golden, a multi-layered, swirling track. A Dreamwavey retro ElectroPop track washed with Chillwave’s reverb sounds more contemporary that you’d think. This tune shines, everything about it is shimmering and bright, but in soft focus. The hazy synths blend and evolve together like a nostalgic dream, instantly confortable but somehow distant,  while the vocals dance around, weaving in and out of the song. There’s an almost shoegaze quality to this track, except it’s far too dancefloor friendly to be truly ‘gazey. This, more Electro direction,  definitely has us eager for more from Future Unlimited.

Calfskin

Calfskin

Calfskin is a hard ElectroPop project from Belgium. The solo work of Konstantin De Winter, we’ve actually been debating whether to feature Calfskin for the past week, it’s pretty EBM/FuturePop, which tends to make out toes curl a bit in 2012, but Calfskin managed to win us over in the simplest of ways. By having some damn good songs.

So, upfront, it does sound a little dated. FuturePop had it;s peak in the very early 2000’s, and Calfskin does sound a bit like like it’s stuck in a timebubble. But here’s the good news, if you’re going to sound dated, sound like the good dated stuff, and Calfskin does, having more in common with the intelligent talents of the scene, such as Neuroticfish and Seabound, than the tedious “I can use an arpeggiator” bands that killed FuturePop. Calfskin has just released a new EP, Standing Eight, containing five emotionally charged, driving ElectroPop tracks. The easy standout of the EP is One Step Over (also released as a free single), which is catchy as hell, the chorus will stick in your head all day. Accompanied with rich layers of evocative electronic and a pounding beat. And that really sums up Calfskin’s Standing Eight, you may feel like you’re dancing in an Industrial club in 2001, but the songs are so good, and so infections, you probably won’t care.

The Knocks & Fred Falke’s ‘Geronimo’

the-knocks-fred-falke

We’re probably preaching to the converted here, I suspect most of you have already picked up a copy of The Knocks & Fred Falke amazing collaboration, Geronimo, which is already available at Beatport. Easily a contender for the tune of the year, the original, and arguably the best, mix is now available for your listening pleasure to convince you, if you haven’t already, that you need to pick this up.

What can se say about this tune? It needs to be heard, it’s massive. A grinding, funky five minutes of pure dancefloor anthem. You can hear both The Knocks and Fred Falke in there, the track has a The Knocks groove made Falk style massive. A catchy vocal hook you’ll be singing all day, reels you in while the huge Disco, with a Pop sheen, will just destroy you. Essential stuff.
