Cordova’s ‘Paradigm’ released!

Well, this kinda’ slipped out without telling anyone. I sort of think the label missed a trick here. One of the best loved Dreamwave tracks of recent years, Cordova’s Paradigm, has finally got an official release, with a bunch of reMixes in tow too, where was the fanfares? Where was the spotlight? Where was any promotion at all? It’s a pity, as Paradigm is a killer track !

Even by the time it hit the internet mid-last year it was already a year old, now over twelve months later it’s out , and sounding fresher than ever. Cordova is the meeting of U-Tern (Vaughn Oliver, making massive waves this year as one half of Oliver themed double act Oliver) and his buddy AJK, with Roxy on vocals, and Paradigm is so good it made it into the top five in our twenty best songs of 2011 and in our post on the track we used the words “fucking awesome”. It’s a massive slice of Dreamwave boogie with husky vocals and Sci-Fi vocoding. Nearly two years after it’s creation it hold up and kicks it’s contemporaries arses! And now there’s reMixes too! Broke One gets a look in with a shuffling House mix that mixes a Chicago vibe with an almost UK Garage feel, keeping it smooth. British DJ Fingerman whips up something a little more synth Disco with his mix, pacing choppy synths against Tropical percussion for a funky, airy, groove. All that’s left to say is how glad we are that this if finally out, and how bewildered we are that the label decided not to tell anyone about it.

Strangers reMix Kimbra

I think New Zeland songstress Kimbra’s appearances on electronic rumors come along like busses. Just before she broke we featured her tracks and reMixes quite a lot, then there was a period of quite here, but now with some good mixes coming along all at once, the last being Aeroplane’s mix of Two Way Street, she’s becoming a staple feature again. Next up is this mix of Posse from London’s SynthPop finest, Strangers.

Pulsating electronics abound in Strangers’ mix of Posse. Underpinned by a deep throbbing bass, Strangers drop Cabaret Voltaire style Dubby stabs and Industrial noise on the track, providing an enigmatic electronic backing for Kimbra’s husky vocal. DiscoSocks’ ‘Motivation’

Did someone order a big slab of actual Disco? Well MofoHiFi sister label Heavy Disco have snapped up London groovemeister DiscoSocks to bring you just what you want. And, man, does he deliver. Keep it locked for some insanely infectious Disco action.

Motivation is a huge feel-good tune. Layered thick with slap bass, a catchy hook and a big horn section. This track is just all about the dancefloor, nothing more nothing less, and what more is needed? DiscoSocks’ crazy bass playing give the track it’s heart, literally flying through the track, whist all around it horn stabs and snatches of big diva vocals provide an uplifting groove that is just irresistible. This is Disco.

Flemming Dalum & Kid Machine

Two of the worlds finest Italo minds have come together, at last, for an original recording. DJ legend, King Of The Cut, Flemming Dalum and Manchester’s new Italo godfather Kid Machine are gearing up for the release of their new collaborative 12”, titled Fantasmi.

Fantasmi is a futuristic thrill ride of a track. With in it’s five minutes it takes the listen on a journey, a narrative, that slide from one mood to the next whilst keeping solid time with the machine beat. From the offset you are presented with rapid fire arpeggios and Industrial percussion but soon the track eases you into, not a frantic tune, but a mid-tempo synthetic odyssey. mixing in a lot of Dubby elements into their brooding Sci-Fi synths, highlighting the offworld feel and acting as a nice foil for the piercing melodies, the human side of the Fantasmi. Fantasmi is the lead track from an EP highlighting Mantchester’s electronic talent, including work from Ste Spandex, Il Bosco, and Starion.

Mitch Murder’s ‘Rush’

Tension mount thought Swedish SynthWave master Mitch Murder’s new tune, Rush. Back in a soundtrack groove after the retro Pop of Feel The Air and the Twin Peaks homage Traces To Nowhere, Rush sees Mitch back doing what he does best, being better than everyone else in the world at 80’s synthesizer soundtrack music.

And Rush is a soundtrack unto itself, taking the listen through three or four ‘set pieces’, from the frantic opening section that sets up the action, this is lead by a soaring solo into a more relaxed chunk, contemplative synth work and intertwining melodies forming a reflective mood. Following from this the high pace picks up again, this time more jarring and disjointed, the digital bass trying to keep to with the different flying elements as the track heads into a big string finale. How Mitch takes us on this electronic music journey is a work of art. No one rocks a synth like Mitch Murder, and no-one tells a story quite like him either.

Branded James reMixes Youngblood Hawke

We got sent the reMix of LA Indie bad Youngblood Hawke’s oft-reMixed We Come Running by American producer Branded James. We know next to nothing about Branded James, and that’s only a little bit less than we know about Youngblood Hawke, so if you don’t mind we’re just going to chat about the music for a bit.

For a producer out of the blue, this track is really good. Branded James nicely marries a Nu-Disco groove with lush Dreamwave synths and a warm retro feel. We’re really not that familiar with the Indie-Folk original, but these vocals work perfectly with James’ slick, optimistic, sound. Even the production is very solid. The mix is carried by some seriously airborne lead lines and punchy synth stabs, both having a nice nostalgic vibe to them that makes it feel like these vocals, that do have an anthemic quality to them, have always been part of this track.

Sgreyes Vs. Quasars

Russia is at it again, leading the way in retro SynthWave with a Italo and Disco twist. Right here sees Russian newcomer Sgreyes teaming up with one of the best Russian producers of recent years Quasars, for a pumping, Robocop sampling, Shocking Facts.

Resting on a nice FM bassline, Shocking Facts is all bright, shimmering synths and twisting lead lines. Driven by an robotic dancefloor groove, Sgreyes and Quasars brew up just the right mix of Italo’s synth bass driven dancefloor power and SynthWave’s floating 80s soundtrack sheen. Capturing the perfect 80s electronic feel, Sgreyes Vs. Quasars make a pretty unbeatable team.

Cassette Club drop EP of unreleased material

Cassette Club, one of London’s best Disco tinged ElectroPop acts, and one of the most underrated synth outfits in the country, have just released a free EP of unreleased and older material. Five tracks of some of the finest, most soulful electronic music around right now.

Some of this collection we’ve heard before, some is new to us, all of it sounds fresh as hell, despite the odd track being a few years old. We looked in on Talk to Me a few weeks ago, a slick DiscoPop number that serves as a addition to this EP which kicks off proper with Don’t Go, a resonate, smooth jam that immediately strikes as being head and shoulders above a good chunk of UK DiscoPop acts right now, an opinion only strengthened as the EP slides into the retro synth Funk of Living In A Video. Living In A Video is pure class late 80’s robotic R&B, ElectroPop with a powerful Disco injection, it could give Chromeo a run for their money. Number Seven has more of an 80’s Pop soul feel to it, with heavy synth overtones, like a meeting of The Human League and ABC with contemporary production. The EP plays out on Bodylights, a fantastic closer and probably the slickest groove on the EP, this is a one-hundred-percent late night jam. Silky smooth and Moog Funk fuelled , Bodylights will leave you wanting more. Cassette Club have just given you a full EP, for free, that beats most of what you have paid for this year, it;s all old stuff too, just imagine what a new album from them would be like. We can’t wait!

Russ Chimes reMixes Bastille

The sounds of London based ElelectroPopper Bastille are making some serious waves, majestic and dramatic, yet pretty introspective they are the perfect fit for this post-TEED world. However, things get really interesting when you add a little of Russ Chimes in the mix.

Flaws is Bastille’s signature tune, and it’s about to get re-released complete with reMix package. Headlining this is Mr. Chimes with a full-on Chicago House created from that dense production styles that we love about him so much. Rather than frantically throwing out whatever track they can knock together, every week, like most producers seem to have been bullied into doing these days, Chime’s tracks are few and far between. But you can see why, each tune is a labour of love, and obviously something that he has taken an immense amount of time and care over. The production alone, with so much going on, yet everything having room to breathe, must have taken ages. Let along the composition itself, a hyper House workout with an infectious bassline hook and complex intertwining melodies. just the right snatches of Bastille’s vocal have been used to give the track an anthemic quality. this one will be packing dancefloors for months to come.
