Sam Padrul’s new tune

Sam Padrul

‘Let’s Make History’ is the new track from Chicago based Funkmeister Sam Padrul.

Dropping a smooth slab of Funk with more soul, less robotics than his previous tracks Sam delivers a chilled get down jam. In his own words: “After having been listening to disco and early 80’s boogie records for the past several months, I was inspired to make a track that was more organic, downtempo, and groovier than my previous single, “All I Do”. In particular, this song was inspired a lot by Bill Withers’ “Bout Love” album, whose smooth Wurlitzers and Rhodes kept me groovin’.”. He’s nailed those slick, funky vocals perfectly. Nothing but good times could come from a track like this, it’s like an audio sunset beach party.

Montevideo’s ‘Horses’

Montevideo

Belgian eclectic Indie-Electro/Disco outfit Montevideo have a new single in the works. Following up their ‘Tribal Dance’, dropped through Relish Recordings, with this new track, ‘Horses’. What you have here is like a soundclash between Moroder and Passion Pit that’s being released on Smile Recordings later in February.

Just one cut from their forthcoming album, which they are currently recording with none other than Joakim, ‘Horses’ was recorded at the DFA studios in New York. Lucky people! If you’ve ever seen the DFA studios you’ll know it’s like an Aladdin’s cave of vintage, rare and quirky electronic equipment. I must be such fun to record there. Unsurprisingly, then ‘Horse’ has a bit of a New York Disco feel to it, the buzzy synths and Moroder-esque arpeggios see to that. it’s a nice groove that’s added upon with a layer of summery Indie-Electro. Hopefully the album will be out in time for the warmer months, this kind if left-field Indie-Disco, a bit laid back, a bit funky, a bit interesting, always goes down well on chilled summer’s days. There’s also a re-work from Mickey on the way, which ups the Moroder quota considerable, you can hear a small snippet here.

Chrome Canyon’s new EP

chrome canyon

France’s On The Fruit Records are killin’ it right now. They are pumping out quality release after release and the next up is no exception. Released today is the new EP from Brooklyn based futurist Chrome Canyon.

The ‘Body Music’ EP is space-age retro synth Funk paradise. The EP is summed up in the lead track ‘Computers Of Love’. What’s not to like in this track? It’s got everything you’d want from cosmic analog Disco. Funky slap bass, huge Sci-Fi synths, vocoded vocals and as the various melodies spin out into the galaxy you get the feeling that there is a not only pretty impressive musicality behind the tracks, but also a quirky sense of humour.  When the rockin’ Funk solo kicks in you know you’re in the right place. the track is reMixed by Melee Beats, and a man of consistent quality, Douze. Douze brings this nostalgia jam into the 21st century and adds a little French Touch to the mix, in a big way. The EP’s other original ‘Body Music’ is more of a brooding, ‘80’s soundtracky, peice. Like a meeting of Vangelis and Kraftwerk it’s the musical narrative of a robotic call to arms and could have featured on the best of early ‘80’s Sci-Fi flicks. Heroismo and Stavarsky both take a crack at reMixing ‘Body Music’, with the latter delivering a dark post-Italo dark future mix. If the original is the Sci-Fi movies theme, then Starvasky provides the backing for when adversity strikes. Great moody SynthWave. If you like vintage synth music and old school Italo and Disco beats, then this release’ll be something special for you.

Giorgio Moroder’s ‘E=mc²’, a whole bunch of reMixes!

Giorgio Moroder

‘E=mc²’ is my favourite Giorgio Moroder track, so it was with great interest that I approached Sweedish Disco label MB Disco’s new collection of reMixes of the track. They released a ton of reMixes in the package and invited some legendary figures in Italo and Cosmic Disco to take part.

To run down some of the stand out versions let’s start with L.I.S., who turn in a deep analog Disco track, all rounded bouncy bass and sparse arpeggios. using similar instrumentation to Moroder let’s L.I.S capture a similar mood but with a much updated sound. Gomma’s Rodion drops a RoboDisco version of the track next which is almost exactly what I had in my head that this release would contain before I listened to it. Frantic, slightly retro, synthetic Disco that layers upon the original, making it more complex and full with an Italo twang.  Speaking of Italo, legends of the genre Klein & MBO deliver an unsurprisingly ‘80’s mix, raw 909 beats and Italo basslines are in order here that stays true enough to the original but adds an eighties euro dancefloor feel that could have easily seen it as a 12” release from the early ‘80’s. The release is also graced by Electro pioneer Alexander Robotnick who’s dark vocoding and Kraftwerk-on-steroids electronics create a completely different track, more of a homage to Moroder. Alongside theses tracks, you’ll find on the record work from Dionigi, I-Robots and Daniele Baldelli.

ComboStar’s new EP

ComboStar

Nine years ago Parisian outfit ComboStar released ‘In My Soul’ a big, filtered French House track that made some waves. Now in 2012 they are back with a new EP on La Valigetta.

The ‘Combostella’ EP is a bit hit an miss, a couple of the tracks on there are a bit Nu-Disco by numbers, a bit uninspired. But these two tracks ‘Straight In The Eye’ and, especially, ‘Discoball Room’ make the EP worth it. ‘Straight In The Eye’ makes great use of some pretty original samples to create a peak time Disco tune that is novelty enough to chart. ‘Discoball Room’, though, is the track that makes the EP. Layers of synthesizer Funk and squelchy little melodies play all over a Disco-House beat. A whole EP of this kind of stuff would have been killer, rather than the commercial, compilation focused Disco, maybe next time.

Francophilippe’ new album

Francophilippe

Champagne Records bare back with another awesome, and free, release. Newcastle Nu-Disco producer Francophilippe delivers a whole album of funked up cuts.

‘Fonkophile’ is a collection of his works to date and perfectly shows off his slick Disco sound. The album contains 14 tracks and each one displays Francophilippe talent for combining the traditional smooth Nu-Disco sound with the kind of chopped-up Ed Banger-esque French Electro of SebastiAn. ‘Fonkophile’ is a pretty prolific collection of two years work, if I had one tiny, tiny complaint it’s that Francophilippe can occasionally be heavy handed with his Sidechaining, going beyond the desired effect and sounding like the track is being dunked in and out of a swimming pool, but that’s just nit-picking really. All-in-all ‘Fonkophile’ is an awesome release.

DiscoSocks’ new single

discosocks

London based bass player turned Disco demon DiscoSocks released a new double A-side single today.

From the moment ‘Voodoo’ kicks in you seriously get hat this guy is experienced with bass. Both the slap playing and the synth lines are amazing. Funky and complex lines intertwine around each other to create a wall of dancefloor destroying synthesizer Disco. the flip side, ‘Boogie Hour’ is just as meticulously crafted and brings more of a banging Electro-House vibe to DiscoSocks Nu-Disco. Both tracks are top quality productions prime to be dropped at peak time.
